FA CUP 5TH ROUND

After successive league defeats to Spurs and Everton, followed by a drab goalless draw at QPR, Villa were going in to their FA Cup tie at White Hart Lane short on confidence.

Did it show?

Not a chance!

Connolly's men get revenge for the 5-2 drubbing a fortnight back by crushing Tottenham and moving in to the Quarter Finals.

Villa are drawn at home to Hull or Ipswich in the 6th Round.

Next up, it's the Carling Cup final at Wembley against Arsene Wenger's Arsenal.
ARSENAL v ASTON VILLA - CAPITAL ONE CUP FINAL 2013

"This is the first final this club has been in since 2010 and we haven't won a trophy in 16 years. The staff, players and myself know what this means to the fans and we will fight to the death to bring home the cup."
Villa manager, Jason Connolly

"Ze fans are getting a bit uhhhh restless as ve have not won a trophy in a few years, so we need to get out zer and dominate from the kick off. It will be a good game, Jason has Villa playing some uhhh nice football and they'll come out and attack us, so ve have to be on our guard."
Arsene Wenger - Arsenal Manager

STARTING LINE UPS

Chances were few and far between in the first half of the 2013 Capital One Cup Final in front of a 90,000 capacity crowd at Wembley. The best being an Arsenal penalty after 20 minutes when Olivier Giroud was brought down by Raul Albiol. Brad Guzan wonderfully saved Jack Wilshere's resulting spot kick to the dismay of the Arsenal faithful.

HALF TIME SCORE: ARSENAL 0-0 VILLA

Villa came out all guns blazing in the second half and took the lead when Darren Bent got free in the box to slip home a ball from Karim Ait Fana.

Arsenal were level 5 minutes later when Per Mertesacker knocked home a cross from Jack Wilshere.

The game looked to be heading to extra time but a masterstroke double substitution from Jason Connolly saw Matt Lowton and Marc Albrighton replace the underperforming Alan Hutton and Charles N'Zogbia with with 10 minutes to play.

Lowton and Albrighton linked up down the right with speed and found Benteke who's pass found Ait Fana in acres of space and he clinically drilled the ball in to the corner with just 6 minutes to play.

Arsenal went forward but an interception from Wanyama started a Villa counter and the Kenyan stroked the ball to Ait Fana who found Christian Benteke who slotted passed the Arsenal keeper.

FINAL SCORE FROM WEMBLEY:

"I'm absolutely ecstatic, the players have battled hard all season to get here and I'm delighted for the fans who have silverware to celebrate for the first time since 1996. We knocked out Manchester United, Everton and Norwich on the way here, so by beating 4 Premiership clubs, my players deserve their winner's medals. We are in the Quarter Finals of the F.A. Cup and 7th in the league with a game in hand. This is going to be a good season and we're looking forward to being back in Europe next season!"
Jason Connolly, Villa Manager

"Credit where it's due, they were better than us. They play good football and with such a young squad and manager, they're only going to get better."
Jack Wilshere
JASON CONNOLLY! CLAP CLAP CLAP CLAP! JASON CONNOLLY!

Seriously though, brilliant job.

Now, the league title next. ;)

cheers pal! Aiming for the title in another couple of seasons when I've the squad built a bit more :)
SIXTH!!

Aston Villa move up to 6th in the Premiership table after a 3-1 victory over Wigan at the DW Stadium through goals from Bent, N'Zogbia and Benteke.

"They're a very good side, they could have beaten us by more - Al Habsi really kept it from being a cricket score."
Roberto Martinez, Wigan Manager

Connolly's men then travelled to Swansea and an entertaining game looked to be heading to a goalless draw until Nathan Dyer fouled Ron Vlaar and crossed for Danny Graham to poke home.

"I'm absolutely disgusted by the refeereing, Dyer practically wrestled Ron to the floor before he could cross the ball. I'm gutted for my players, they played very well and to lose like that is hard to take."
Jason Connolly

Villa remain 6th in the table despite defeat.

They now host Ipswich in the 6th Round of the F.A. Cup.
TRANSFER NEWS

"I'm delighted to announce a deal that we have just agreed for a very promising young player. We have been negotiating hard for a few weeks and have had to keep it quiet to stop other teams getting in there, but the deal is done and Cristian Tello will arrive in the summer on a Bosman free transfer from Barcelona."
Jason Connolly

Tello has made 8 appearances for Barcelona this season, scoring once after impressing for their 'B' team where he netted 4 goals in 26 starts.
FA CUP QUARTER FINALS

A solitary goal from Matthew Lowton earns Villa a place in the F.A. Cup semi-finals at the expense of Ipswich Town.

The Villains are drawn away to champions Manchester City in the semi-finals.

ASTON VILLA V MANCHESTER CITY

The next game for Villa is a warm up for the FA Cup semi final against the champions.

The home side come out attacking but go 1-0 down to a wonderful solo effort from Sergio Aguero on 16 minutes.

The lead is doubled when Marouane Fellaini heads home from a Tevez corner.

Villa settle and play some good football and give themselves a lifeline on the hour through Darren Bent.

The City defence comes under a lot of pressure but holds firm through to the final whistle.

FINAL SCORE: VILLA 1-2 MANCHESTER CITY

Villa are up against struggling Newcastle at St James' Park next.

Match report:

LEAGUE TABLE AFTER 30 GAMES

Villa sit impressively in 6th late in the season but have some tough fixtures to get through in the run in to ensure they stay there.

VILLA BUILD FOR THE FUTURE

The heavy investments in to the youth facilities at Villa Park have paid off as the club's youngsters went the distance in the U19's Champions Cup.

The final was played at Wembley and Villa even took the lead against Barcelona thanks to Jack Grealish. The Spaniards ultimately proved to strong and won the game 2-1.

"It was a wonderful effort from the boys to get this far and there is certainly no shame in losing to Barcelona. We're now looking forward to even more of the young lads breaking in to the first team."
Gordon Cowans, Villa Reserve Team Boss

KEEPING THE MOMENTUM

Villa take 7 points from their next four league games to keep themselves sitting 7th in the table.

However, they bow out of the F.A. Cup 2-1 after extra time to Manchester City. In the other semi-final, Championship side Wolves cause an upset by beating Everton on penalties.

"We've performed above all expectations this season and credit to the lads for still going strong. We have some massive fixtures left which I believe we can get a decent return from and hopefully push us in to the top 6."
Randy Lerner, Villa Chairman
