Newcastle Steal Point From Emirates

http://www.jarrowandhebburngazette.com/webimage/1.4360466.1332161794!image/3046216988.jpg_gen/derivatives/landscape_595/3046216988.jpg

In what was a magnificent match in front of 60,000 people at the Emirates, Arsenal could not quite come away with the 3 points after a fantastic Cissé strike in the 83rd minute gave Newcastle fans another reason to jump out of their seats.

Arsenal fans only had to wait 27 minutes for the first goal of the match when a fantastic Arteta through ball slipped Santi Carzola in behind the Newcastle defence to slot home and give the Gunners the lead. Only 7 minutes later Newcastle responded brilliantly passing out from defence which lead to Tioté putting a low cross from the edge of the box to the back post and found Simone Pepe who delighted Magpie supporters scoring only 34 minutes into his debut match! The match went into half time at 1-1 a piece and with the majority of possession and shot attempts Arsenal would have been disappointed not to be in front.

Things were deadlocked up until the 71st minute when a rare mistake by Yoan Gouffran allowed the ball to fall to Ramsey who slipped the ball past an advancing Krul and allowed a tap in goal for new Swedish striker who signed from PSV, Ola Toivonen. This made Vella change tactics immediately subbing Cissé on in the 72nd minute for Gouffran, which of course ended up being the game saving change. In the 83rd minute of the game some fantastic work from Hatem Ben Arfa on the edge of the box allowed a cross into a dangerous area where Cissé was able to strike the ball on the volley into the back of the net, gifting Newcastle a fantastic draw to take from the match.

Vella spoke the media after the match and had this to say; "I'm delighted we were able to get at least a point out of this match as I thought we defended quite well and played some good football especially on the counter. Stats will obviously show a heavy advantage to the home side however in no point of the match did I feel the result was beyond us. I'm also delighted for Papiss to get off the mark the way he did and hopefully it will bring plenty more goals to come."

Fucking brilliant stealing a point from the Gunners but you definitely have to pick up some wins if you want to stay in the job! :P

Strong Finish to September!

The month of September has shown that Newcastle are beginning to come to terms with Vella's style of football and enjoying it! Newcastle played some great football to come away with Emirates with a point, followed by a Gallant performance against Manchester City where they unfortunately came away with a defeat. After the Manchester City clash things went sour for Newcastle when Papiss Cissé pulled his hamstring and will be out for the next 3 weeks.

Newcastle then turned their attention to a home Europa League clash against Scottish Premier Division team Hearts, which Carlton Cole scored a debut goal in only 5 minutes. QPR in the league were the next team to go down to Newcastle when Gouffran managed to score 2 goals inside the first 3 minutes in a great display of form. In the following match Newcastle made hard work of Championship team Charlton in the 3rd round of the Carling Cup, where the only difference between the teams was the quality of Hatem Ben Arfa's finish off the bench in extra time.

The last match of the month for Newcastle came against Aston Villa in what was a dominating game in terms of possession and shots on goal, but not on the scoreboard. Newcastle went into half time with 10 corners next to their names on the stat sheet but also no goals. Magpie supporters would have been forgiven for thinking their chance had gone begging in the 73rd minute when Cheick Tioté was given a second yellow card and ordered off the pitch. This caused Vella into tactical changes, taking off both wingers, Pepe & Marveaux and replacing them with Anita as a defensive midfielder and Carlton cole as a striker alongside Gouffran, with Ben Arfa dropping back into the centre of midfield alongside Cabaye. Carlton Cole went on to make himself a hero in the 87th minute when he scored his first League goal for Newcastle and won them the game. The result would have come as a relief for Vella, also delighted Cabaye is back fit and healthy.

Solid Month of October

October was very much a roller-coaster ride for Vella and Newcastle, keeping up with some solid form none the less. Vella's boys top Group C of their Europa League campaign with 3 wins from 3 matches against fairly good opposition, with the boys defeating Rubin and Leverkusen both away from home in the month of October.

In the Premier League, Newcastle were forced to come from behind to rescue draws in both matches against Norwich and West Ham, which Vella may be slightly disappointed about knowing wins could have put them into a top 4 position on the table. Vella will be thrilled however with Papiss Cissé's return from his hamstring injury against Stoke City, where he scored a fantastic hat trick to lead Newcastle to a 4-2 victory, as well as claiming 3rd spot in the goal of the month awards with his incredible long range chip over the keeper in the 93rd minute.

The most disappointing match of the month was the last, a 1-0 loss to Ipswitch in the Capital One Cup 4th round, knocking Newcastle out of the competition. However, there were plenty of positives to take out of the month of October for Vella. Carlton Cole carried on with some good goal scoring form, Papiss Cissé's fantastic return from injury and the fact Newcastle were able to show some character in coming from behind to rescue points against Norwich and West Ham, taking them to 5 games straight undefeated in the Premier League.

Frustrating Month of November

November was an extremely tough month for Newcastle and Vella, with matches played against some very strong opposition. The start of the month began in the most frustrating fashion when Vella's boys let slide a 2-0 lead at half time to lose 3-2 to Swansea, ending the 5 game premier league undefeated run. Newcastle, lead by Carlton Cole picked themselves up in the following game with a 3-0 win over Leverkusen at home, making it 4 wins from 4 in the group stage of the Europa League.

Newcastle's next 2 games came against Liverpool and Tottenham away. Suarez took Newcastle scoring a hat trick in the first hour of the match where the end result read 4-2 in Liverpool's favour. Newcastle were able to take a point away from White Hart Lane however, with a 1-1 draw against Tottenham. Things turned sour over the next week for Newcastle, as Anita was confirmed to be on the sidelines for 4 months having torn his calf muscle in the match against Tottenham, as well as Cabaye ruled out for 3 months with damaged Achilles tendon.

Having suffered a tough blow with injuries, Newcastle rallied together in the last few games of the month, beating Sunderland 3-1 at home followed by a huge team building 1-0 victory over Chelsea in what was a completely dominant performance.

How has Vella Settled In?

I walk into a small interview room, face-to-face with ex-Manchester United superstar, Gary Neville, waiting for the questions!

"Here he is, Josh Vella. So I'm sure all football followers are wondering, how have you settled here in you're new home of Newcastle?"

"Yeah it's been fantastic Gary, all the staff and players have treated me like I've been here my whole life from day one, as well as the fantastic response I have had from the supporters, it's been great."

"Everyone heard about the Ben Arfa incident, how is that going now?"

"Yeah everything is completely fine, it hasn't affected the locker room, we handled it between the two of us and hopefully by the end of the season we have achieved his goals!"

"You have just come off a 1-0 win over Chelsea just a few days ago, how do you rate that win in contrast with the rest of the wins whilst you've been here?"

"The best yet, for a while there I thought we wouldn't get the job done, but Jonas scored his first goal of the season in basically the last minute of the game which was an incredible relief and an exciting moment for everyone at the club. I can quite honestly say it has been the best win so far in my opinion."

"There were 3 league games in the month of November that you were unable to take the win from, all included you're team giving away penalties. Personal thoughts on the incidents?"

"Haha, yes I did also take notice of that. At the time it was quite frustrating as I thought, without naming which games they occurred in, the results were changed because of them. I also thought in the match against Tottenham when Gouffran was bought down in the box in the last few minutes of the game there was a decision to be made which wasn't. But that's football, you win some and you lose some."

"You have been quite unlucky in recent weeks with the number of injuries you have picked up, do you think they will play a big role in the remainder of the season and European ambitions for the season?"

"Of course, with injuries to Cabaye and Anita who have been crucial in our structure so far, it definitely hits us hard. Fortunately, Debuchy is only about 2 weeks away from returning and Marveaux not much further behind. However, I think it is an opportunity to test the squad's depth and allow players to step up, as we showed in the Chelsea match without either of those boys we can definitely get the job done."

"Who do you think has played the biggest role so far this season in the clubs success?"

"I can't pinpoint just one player, Papiss has been fantastic as of late in front of goal and stood up when we needed him too, Cole and Pepe have been absolutely outstanding on loan for us and I hope that it can continue, Coloccini has been fantastic down back and also seems to be getting on the scoresheet more then we anticipated and of course Krul has been brilliant in goals making game saving saves!"

"Finally, you come up against Manchester United in a few days time and I've been told the club you have supported all you're life! How do you think the boys will go in front of the ever faithful Old Trafford support?"

"Haha, that is true I have loved Manchester United all my life. I am really going to relish the challenge and I hope the boys will too. The last time I was at Old Trafford it was with my Father when I was much younger on a holiday, haha, so this will be a nerve racking and life changing moment for myself."

"On behalf of all football followers and myself, I wish you luck for the remainder of you're career and I'm sure there are big things to come. I hope to talk to you soon"

"Thanks very much Gary, very much appreciated"
