December started with a tough loss against Manchester United at Old Trafford, followed by a 0-0 draw against Rubin in the Europa League, which was a dead rubber match for Newcastle. Jonas Gutiérrez lead Newcastle to a big 3-0 home win over West Brom, although Sissoko was sent off and banned for 3 matches.
Newcastle were beaten convincingly in the following game against Southampton, where a number of pass back errors cost them dearly. The next 3 Premier League games for Newcastle were very solid, taking 7 out of a possible 9 points with Simone Pepe in fantastic form in the first 2 matches before an injury halted his match against Reading.
Although Newcastle are sitting in a good position on the Premier League table, Vella will be worried about the injury list which could take a big toll on their season. With one of Newcastle's best players throughout the season Pepe tearing his hamstring, Cabaye and Anita all on the sidelines with long term injuries, the future is not as bright as it could have potentially been for Vella and his squad.
So far, so good for Vella in the January transfer window with the confirmed loan signings of 2 new players to join Newcastle.
25-year-old Markel Susaeta has joined Newcastle from Athletic Bilbao on loan until the end of the season and Vella hopes he will add to the attacking prowess of Newcastle.
24-year-old German winger, Sidney Sam has joined Newcastle on loan from Leverkusen until the end of the year also and will hopefully add positively to Vella's team with his acceleration and quality finishing.
"I believe Susaeta and Sidney Sam will add more quality to our wings for the remainder of the season. I have noticed that most of the boys goals have come down the wings initially and I think these boys can add to that" Vella has told media sources. Vella went on to tell the media that the loss of Pepe to a 3 month injury was also something that he was looking to cover.
27-year-old right back, James Perch has left Newcastle to new club West Bromich Albion for a total figure of £3.5 million pounds. Perch was unhappy with the amount of game time he was receiving under Vella at Newcastle, only managing to break into the squad for 1 game under Vella's reign.
There were a few more loan deals that were complete on transfer deadline day for Newcastle and Vella. Gabriel Obertan has been loaned out back to his first professional club, Bordeaux, unhappy that he has only played the 4 games under Vella's reign at Newcastle so far. The inclusions into the Newcastle squad come from A.C Milan and Wigan respectively in Didac Vila and Jordi Gomez both on loans also.
Didac Vila -
Loan - A.C Milan CA: CP:
Vila has joined the Newcastle squad on loan as a back up in the left back position. Although he has not really been given an opportunity at A.C Milan as of yet, along with Santon and Haidara it is likely Vila will get some game time alternating between those players.
Jordi Gomez -
Loan - Wigan CA: CP:
With both Tiote and Anita out with long term injuries and Yohan Cabaye only just returning it means the central midfield position definitely has some holes that need to be filled. For this reason Vella has loaned a temporary replacement in Jordi Gomez who he hopes can slot into the centre of midfield and add some creativity.
January started quite well for Vella and Newcastle with Carlton Cole continuing his fantastic goal scoring form with a brace at home against Wigan for the 2-0 win. The good form continued with a trip to QPR and a 4-0 win in the FA Cup with a good performance by Gouffran in the process.
The 3rd clash of the month was up against high flying Arsenal where Vella's team dominated the game with 19 shots to 9, unfortunately only managing the 1-1 draw after a very bright and attacking start. They backed that respectable performance up with a 2nd win against QPR in 10 days when Gouffran gave Newcastle a 1-0 win, taking his goal tally against QPR to 5 goals in 3 meetings this season.
A few poor performances were to follow with 2-1 losses to both Aston Villa in the premier league and Crystal Palace in the FA Cup with Vella's squad struggling to cope with Cisse's absence due to international duty and the injury toll. This was followed up however with a good 1-1 draw against Manchester City and brilliance by Ben Arfa, where Newcastle only fell 6 minutes and an own goal short of claiming the huge win.
