Very nice style, but a bad result. Hopefully you can do better for the rest of the season - it's not hard to get goals with Newcastle in my opinion ;)

Vella Struggles to Find Feet

http://i.telegraph.co.uk/multimedia/archive/01409/mike-ashley_1409625c.jpg

Whether the lack of experience or lack of squad harmony is the issue, Vella better work it out soon or he could be walking out of St. James' Park even quicker then he walked in. Vella's Newcastle have gone 270 minutes of football now without scoring, having conceded 6 in the process. Although winning friendlies is not always the priority, getting beaten by two much smaller Scottish clubs will not make Newcastle supporters happy at all.

Newcastle Chairman Mike Ashley has told supporters to stick with Vella in these times of hardship for the club. Mike Ashley has spoken to media in which he responded with "Vella is still learning about how to approach working with these knew players. You must remember many of Newcastle's squad don't speak too much English, so everyone is learning and trying to work as best they can together". The loss of Yohan Cabaye in the centre of midfield is evident so far, as Newcastle have struggles to penetrate from that position.

Newcastle will have to regroup from their losing start ahead of this weeks first leg Europa League match against Dutch club Vitesse in what supporters hope will be the start of better things to come.

"European Qualification or I'm Gone"

http://whatculture.com/wp-content/uploads/2012/06/Hatem-Ben-Arfa-Newcastle-vs-Bolton_2746987.jpg

Hatem Ben Arfa launched a questionable attack on new manager Josh Vella after Vella rejected a £19 million pound bid from Manchester City for his services. Ben Arfa told Vella if Newcastle is unable to finish in European qualification by the end of the season he wants to move to a bigger club. The surprising statement by Ben Arfa has definitely not made the tough start to managerial duties any easier for Vella.

Vella spoke to media soon after the incident became public knowledge and said, “Hatem is a quality player and I understand his ambitions to play for a club which finishes in European qualifications on a consistent basis as well as contending for the Premier League trophy, he simply wants to showcase his talents to the world… Whether we do finish in the top 6 or not this season I hope Hatem will see that there is much to be excited about in the near future here at Newcastle”.

With Vella starting to settle in to his new home in Newcastle he will definitely want his key players to be focused and dedicated to the challenging season ahead.

Transfers!

With a fairly tight budget, transfers were quite hard to come by for Newcastle manager Vella, but he did manage to loan a few players that may add valuable quality and depth to the squad.

Departures

Nile Ranger - Charlton, Loan

Whilst 21-year-old Ranger has been at Newcastle since 2008, Charlton will be the 3rd club to reach a loan agreement for his services. Ranger will be at Charlton until mid-2013 and may look for a permanent home following if Newcastle don't offer some playing time.

Shane Ferguson - Aberdeen, Loan
CA:
CP:

21-year-old Shane Ferguson has come through the youth system at Newcastle since 2007 but did not breakthrough into the first team until 2010. Having only played 14 games in the first team since being at Newcastle the loan move to Aberdeen could come as a welcome relief to Ferguson.

Romain Amalfitano - Cesena, Loan
CA:
CP:

23-year-old French attacking midfielder Romain Amalfitano has been sent on loan to Cesena from new club Newcastle after his contract was terminated by Stade de Reims, Ligue 2 in July 2012. Newcastle picked Romain up on a free transfer and have now sent him away for what they hope will be some good first team experience with Cesena.

Arrivals

Carlton Cole - West Ham, Loan
CA:
CP:

The 28-year-old West Ham man, Carlton Cole has hit the best form in his career scoring 15 goals for West Ham in his previous season. After spending 6 years at Chelsea followed by 6 years with West Ham, Vella and Newcastle hope that Cole's strength and ability in the air will enhance the striker position and add depth to the squad.

Simone Pepe - Juventus, Loan
CA:
CP:

29-year-old attacking right winger, Simone Pepe has been bought into the Newcastle squad in the hope he will show some of his goal scoring and playmaking abilities that he has shown on the wing for Udinese and Juventus in the past. With fantastic teamwork and work rate Pepe will fit perfectly into Vella's squad, which is the first club Pepe will represent outside of Italy.

Superstars Find New Home

Many superstars in the world of football found new homes over the transfer window with Thomas Muller and Marouane Fellaini being the most expensive signings. Some other signings to note were Chelsea selling Yossi Benayoun and Florent Malouda to Athletico Madrid and Paris Saint-Germaine respecitvely for less then £1 million pounds each. Tottenham were the biggest spenders in the English premier League over the transfer period, spending £58 million pounds to bring in 5 new players.

Things Are Looking Up

The end to the month of August is just what Vella would have asked for after a problematic start to his managerial reign. There were some fantastic individual performances throughout the three matches, in particular from Gouffran, Debuchy and Marveaux. Marveaux was given an opportunity by Vella in the 2nd leg of the Europa League playoff and took it with both hands after scoring in the 29th minute to put Newcastle a 2nd goal up on aggregate. Debuchy provided great services and speed in the premier league clash against Wigan and was influential in the first league win for Newcastle.

Overall the month of August would have been quite pleasing for Vella and with a tough match against Arsenal to come he will hope that the good form continues.
