'After the match this afternoon, I spoke to Joe Dowley, and asked him to explain why we had lost in such a poor fashion. We told him that it was not acceptable, and I told him immediately that he would be relieved of his duties.'
Dowley had this to say on the matter, in his message to the club's fans and players: 'I am very sad to reveal that my time with Málaga CF is now up. It has been a fantastic ride, and I love all of the fans. I can only thank all of my staff and the chairman Sheikh Abdullah Al-Thani for entrusting me with the role in the last couple of years. The club and I had come to a mutual agreement for my contract to be terminated wit immediate effect after the performances in the league and a slight disagreement. Last of all I would like to thank all of the fantastically talented players I had working under me during my team here at La Rosaleda. It was a fantastic journey.'
