Bergomi: "I Want to Stay with Inter Forever"
Yesterday in a press conference in anticipation of Inter's upcoming match at home to Genoa, Bergomi was asked about his long term targets for both the club and his own managerial career. First, journalists asked if Bergomi thought that the Nerazzuri could handle fighting on all three fronts better than last season and perhaps win all three trophies.
"Last season we were still learning, we were a younger team, and despite a fantastic season right at the very end the difficulty that came with playing so many matches caught up with us at the worst possible time," said Bergomi. "This season is different in a number of ways; we have more depth, we have more experienced players, and, most importantly, we have the hunger to get revenge and win the treble."
The reporters followed with questions about Bergomi's own future at the club, or perhaps at other clubs. Reigning German champions Borussia Dortmund flounder in mid-table this season after a sparkling debut season with Lucien Favre, and are supposedly interested in Bergomi. Manchester United are also interested in the Italian tactician in case famed manager Sir Alex Ferguson retires. Bergomi, however, had other ideas. He said:
"I do not think I will leave. I have a contract that I will honor, and even after that I want to renew it and keep managing here. Inter are the club of my heart. Since I was a boy, I supported the club, and my dreams came true in that in my entire playing career I donned the blue and black and even captained the Nerazzurri. Now I am back as a manager, and I don't want to leave. I want to stay here forever."
This will be music to the ears of Inter fans who have fallen in love with Bergomi once again after he won 2 Scudettos, 2 Coppa Italias, 1 Europa League, 1 Supercoppa Italia, and 1 European Supercup in just 2 years, a total of 7 trophies. As a player, Bergomi won 1 Scudetto, 1 Coppa Italia, 1 Supercoppa Italia, and 3 Europa Leagues in his 20 year stay with Inter. He also won the 1982 World Cup with Italy.
