Becoming A Saint

Spurs get rid of deadwood

The first players who have left Tottenham this summer all have one thing in common - their next destination. Southampton last night agreed a mega £18.1m deal to take not one, not two, not even three, but FOUR Spurs players to St. Mary's.

Full-back Kyle Naughton was retained as a part of the squad by Villas-Boas last season after a successful loan spell at Norwich, but his failure to impress has led to him being deemed unneeded by Jamie Redknapp. He will now try to rebuild his career at Southampton, having cost them a fee of £5m.

Andros Townsend has struggled to break into the first team, and after several loan spells to clubs including Leeds United as well as Harry Redknapp's QPR, Spurs have decided to let him go after the midfielder after the winger made it clear he wanted first team football. Southampton will pay Spurs £5m in exchange for his services.

The third, and possibly most surprising departure is that of left-back Danny Rose, with the youngster enjoying an excellent season on loan at the Stadium of Light. The Under-21 international narrowly missed out on an England call-up after impressing pundits but has been allowed to leave White Hart Lane without much ceremony for -again- a fee of £5m.

And finally, Gylfi Sigurdsson has been sent on loan to St. Mary's until the end of the season, with Southampton paying most of his wages as well as a £3.1m loan fee.

The Iceland international made his return to England on loan from Hoffenheim and impressed at Swansea, and at the end of the season Sigurdsson snubbed Liverpool to join Spurs. But he was not able to perform consistently given that he was not first-choice under AVB. He will be hoping to regain his form at Southampton, who also have an option to sign him at any time for £7.5m.
Cleaning up. Wow.
Great start mate
Great job getting rid of them players non of them are Premier League standard except Sigurdsson
Nice job at selling the players deemed a surplus to requirements yet get a handy profit in the mean time. Keep it up

The Switcheroo

Tottenham make more signings

After strengthening their youth squad for the future, Spurs have finally made the move to bolster their squad to challenge for Champions League places next season.

And swap deals seem to be a common solution in this window, with the Londoners making two already.

Firstly, Scott Parker, 31, will head to Old Trafford in exchange for United defender Chris Smalling. Tottenham will also pay £1m to the league champions.

Smalling wants first team action to help his World Cup chances

Veteran midfielder Parker joined Spurs two years ago from West Ham, after the season in which he was named the Premier League's best player. Parker was Spurs' Mr Consistent for his first year, even captaining the England during it. But the next year was not the same for Parker, and constant injuries kept him out of the first team. Meanwhile, new United manager David Moyes wants to add some steel and experience to his midfield, and saw Parker as the perfect fit.

The man going the other way is Chris Smalling, 22, who was left at the bottom of the pecking order behind Vidic, Ferdinand, Jones, Evans as well as new signing Neven Subotic. Smalling, wants to boost his chances of being an England regular in hopes to make the 2014 World Cup squad.

The second swap deal made by the club sees left-back Benoit Assou-Ekotto return to France with moneybags outfit PSG with French international striker Kevin Gameiro headed the other way along with a £1m fee.

Redknapp was said to have thought Ekotto to be replaceable, and the Cameroon international had himself said publicly that he wanted a move back to France.

Pacy striker Gameiro has 69 Ligue 1 goals to his name and has found himself out in the cold with Laurent Blanc preferring Lavezzi and Ibrahimovic for the striker spots. The former Liverpool target is said to be excited to join Spurs and play in the Premier League.

Another player transfer listed by the new Spurs boss is Emmanuel Adebayor. The striker made a permanent move from Manchester City last year, but has failed to show the same determination and will that he did during his loan spell. Newly rich Monaco - who have been looking for a big name striker to play alongside Falcao - have quickly snapped up the striker for £11m.

And Spurs have fought tooth and nail to beat Monaco's rivals PSG to Adebayor's replacement - Ivory Coast international Wilfried Bony.

The hit-man dominated the scoring charts in Holland and nearly joined Swansea before snubbing the Welsh club to join Spurs, who made a last-second bid of about £15m. Bony will partner up with Jermain Defoe for Spurs next season.
