The First Shot
Blood coursed through my veins, as I scrambled into my car, like a small animal, running from its predator. Shoving the keys into the hole, I set my Sat-Nav for a place, I had been once before, but never wished to visit again.
How could anyone know? I hadn't told anyone about what happened, and I'm sure neither did he, but somehow, someone had surely found out. Why else would they say just those two words? More importantly, why else would they tell me?
My mind, fizzing like a open Coke bottle with an array of unanswered questions, began to process the consequences of this. Not only would I lose my job but I would most likely be sent to prison for the rest of my life. No! Not now! Not after all I had gone through to get me to where I was right now.
The engine grinded to a halt, as I glanced up at the decrepit building that lay, so forebodingly ahead of me. My hands wrapped onto the cold knocker, as I brought it down. A voice could be heard from inside, but its owner was not known. Before, I could comprehend what I had done a man, who I never wished to see ever again in my life, stood at the front door. I felt a harsh pain in my right side, as I fell onto the hard concrete. Shouts could be heard all around me, but I could only think of one thing.
Toby, I failed you.
