SUMMING UP THE TRANSFERS
September 2, 2014
The transfer window closed yesterday evening, after the match against Genoa, that we played awfully. I am pretty satisfied with what we achieved during the market, that was very busy with 5 players entering the squad, and more than 10 leaving for other places… I had a really large amount of money to spend, 101M€ given me by the board with the aim of winning again the league and to arrive in the UCL semifinals… But I didn’t use that much, I felt my squad was fit for those objectives!
The day before the transfer window opened, I received a call by David Gill, Man Utd’s Managing Director. He proposed me a job at his side: a 3,7M€ contract with a transfer budget of 72M€. It was almost a million more than what I am paid by Milan, but it was not a matter of money, but a matter of heart! I’ve always been a Milan’s supporter and I am not interested in leaving this bench now that I am sit on that! Then, I kindly turned down the man’s offer…
Michael Essien on the left, Nuri Sahin on the right.
After the arrivals of Mattia Perin, Fabio and Denys Garmash, already signed before the beginning of the window, I decided to bargain with Chelsea the definitive purchase of Michael Essien after the good season he played with us last year: with Massimo Ambrosini having decide to retire from football, I needed an experienced man in the midfield and I could sign him for only 1,1M€, despite the buy-clause I set up with Chelsea was of 4,3M€.
In the middle of July, I received news that Real Madrid had decided to sell Nuri Sahin out. I had always admired that midfielder, since he was a Dortmund player, than I decided to loan him in my team, setting up a 9M€ buy-clause for the next season.
Philippe Mexes on the left, Nigel de Jong on the right.
After the departure of Balotelli, Nocerino and Adrian, I decided that the squad still remained too large for me. Then, I transfer listed many players, the most important of which was Philippe Mexes, that left our side to go back to his country to join Monaco in a 4,7M€ deal. Other nine men left the team definitively. Among the others, Bartosz Salamon joined Catania in a 6M€ deal, Riccardo Saponara joined Cesena for 3,4M€, while Nigel de Jong was the one I decided to sell to leave space to Sahin: I was getting tired of his rude way of playing and Spanish Real Sociedad came to my door with an 18M€ offer that I couldn’t really turn down.
The large number of 24 players left the team on loan all over the world to gain some first team experience, the most important to notice being Lyes Chiha (Nancy), Valiant Virgili (Fiorentina), Markus Muller (Kaiserslautern), Amedeo La Rosa (Pisa), Carlo Malizia (Real Sociedad) and Mirsad Bakovic (Parma).
