LA Galaxy vs Seattle Sounders; The Season Rests On This
28th of October, 2012. 7.00PM, Los Angeles. My season could end here, or we can set up a possible tie against Portland in the wild cards. LA Galaxy, were favourites. But i knew otherwise.
The players came out the tunnel to a wall of noise. I applauded the home and away fans and took my place in the dugout. I was feeling nerves, but i was feeling confident. I knew how to contain players like Robbie Keane and Juninho, i just hoped the players could pull it off.
Ochoa kicked to Johnson, and the game was underway. Even though we were in Los Angeles, i could hear the Seattle Fans chanting Johnson's name, Ianni's name, then eventually my name. This lit a fire inside my, and i was brimming with a fresh wave of confidence. At that point Johnson breaks through the defence, but his shot was saved well by Perk. The fans applauded furiously as Zakuani rushed to take the corner, i realised just how much this meant to both the fans and the players.
Almost 40 minutes had passed, Johnson, Ochoa, Caskey and Keane had all had chances to score in what was turning out to be a very even game. It was a goal kick to Galaxy after an ambitious effort by Tiffert went wayward. The kick went long and beat both Ianni and Hurtado out of surprise, Colin Clark had broken through and was one-on-one with Gspurning. I couldn't bare to watch, so i turned my back only to hear assisstant scream "WHAT A SAVE SON." To my surprise, Gspurning had somehow managed to tip the effort around the post.
Things soon settles down, and before long it was half-time.
"Listen" i told the players. "You've been playing your heart out there so far, but so have they. I know you lot are physically fitter than them, so keep at, keep doing what you're doing, and we'll come away with that win."
4 minutes after the restart, we had gained a corner. After working on a new corner tactic in training, i was waiting to see Eddie Johnson take his place at back post. Sure enough, he did. Tiffert whipped in the ball, the entire Galaxy defence jumped but were beaten by height, the ball was falling to Johnson near back post. Johnson lifted his leg an almost 90 degree angle and struck the falling ball, firm and hard. "YAA BEAUTY!!!!!!!!!!!!" was the cry from the dugout. I leapt up and punched the air with both fists, and turned to see Johnson do the same.
After the players had returned to their respected positions, the game got under way again. For the 25 minutes chances were few and far between with both teams struggling to test the opposing keepers. I had decided to bring of Zakuani for Neagle at point, expecting an immediate difference. And i got that difference.
10 minutes remaining, and we had really picked up our play. Chances were still not coming, but we were keeping the ball a lot more. Neagle picked up the ball on the half way line, and ran with it for a few yards, waiting for some options. He looked up at saw Eddie Johnson making a run through the defence, and without further ado, Neagle went for him. The pass was weighted perfectly and just dropped over Johnson's shoulder. He used his knee to keep the ball airborne before volleying it home to increase our lead by another.
By this point we were in ecstasy, and loving every minute of it. Johnson ran over to the bench and leapted on my back, punching the air. We were 2-0 up, and on our way to a tie against Portland.
When the final whistle blew, the away support erupted with cheers. I shook my opposing manager's hand, and went over to the away support. "Bring on Portland" i thought.
