FM22 Touch Only On Nintendo Switch

As Sports Interactive announced on October 6th, Football Manager Touch 2022 will only be available on Nintendo Switch as they decided to discontinue FM Touch on all other platforms.

That also means FM Touch won't be part of the free bonuses of the FM22 preorder, which used to be the case the previous years.

The reason for this major change is the process of ‘cost-benefit analysis’ which showed this is the best for both the studio and the wider FM community.

The cost-benefit analysis looks at how much it costs to develop, QA and release each separate version, then compare that against the revenue it will bring in, alongside any other benefits or costs it may offer to the business, outside of pure profit and loss.

So there will be no version of FM Touch 22 available on Steam, the Epic Store, the App Store or Google Play.

How to play FM Touch 22 on PC

However, anyone who wants to play a streamlined version of FM22 anywhere other than Nintendo Switch will still be able to do so.

"But how?" I hear you ask.

For PC players, the Xbox Edition will be available to purchase via the Microsoft Store or via Game Pass.

Tablet players will be able to stream the Xbox Edition to their devices via Microsoft’s xCloud streaming service, which is available to anyone with a Game Pass Ultimate subscription.

Xbox Edition vs FM Touch

The Xbox Edition is originally based on Football Manager Touch, so they share many similarities and are designed to be that streamlined approach.

The main difference is that Xbox Edition is limited to 10 loadable nations, where FM Touch was limited to 3 by default, or unlimited if you changed the settings.

In terms of general gameplay and approach, they are quite similar. And just because it has Xbox in the name, it doesn't mean you need a controller; it can be played with mouse and keyboard.

Football Manager Classic, as Touch was originally named, was added as a game mode within Football Manager 2013, as a streamlined way for people to play.

FM Classic was first released as a standalone game in 2014 on PlayStation Vita and did much better there than SI expected, so they expanded it onto iOS and Android tablets in April 2015.

In 2015 ‘Classic’ got renamed to ‘Touch’ as the control system was very much geared towards touch screens and because there was confusion over the use of ‘Classic’, with fans thinking it was a historical version of FM.

In 2017 Touch was removed as a ‘mode’ from FM, and became a standalone release, selling it as a separate game from FM in 2016.

With the release of the game on Nintendo Switch in 2018 and the Xbox Edition in 2020 – both of which are closely modelled on Touch – sales on the PC, Mac and tablet versions decreased significantly.

Versus Mode stood out

Analytics revealed that most fans who played FM21 Touch, did it to take advantage of Versus mode.

Versus mode allows players to test their FM squad in head-to-head online matches against other managers.

Versus mode will be implemented in the regular version of Football Manager 2022 for the first time, although this won’t be introduced until early next year; literally 2022.

There’s quite a bit of development work required and SI didn’t want to delay the game’s release because of that.
