Football Manager 2024 Tactics - MK Dons Custom Vertical Tiki-Taka (Back-to-Back Promotion 4-
Formation:
4-1-4-1 / 4-3-3 DM Wide (SK, 2 FB, 2 BPD, BWM, 2 CM, 2 IF, AF)

Philosophy:
This tactic delivers back-to-back promotions with underdog squads by blending aggressive pressing with vertical tiki-taka principles. You dominate possession, suffocate opposition build-up, and create central overloads, while your advanced forward and inside forwards exploit spaces for goals.

In Possession:

Shorter Passing: Maintain ball retention and patient build-up.

Low Crosses: Target quick cutbacks and near-post finishes.

Run at Defence: Attack defenders 1v1 to force openings.

Focus Play Down the Left/Right: Adapt to the stronger flank or overlap.

Higher Tempo/Narrow: Fast, intricate play through central areas.

In Transition:

Counter/Counter-Press: Immediately win the ball back; swift vertical attacks when possession is regained.

Out of Possession:

Much Higher Defensive Line & High Press: Compact the space, suffocate weaker opposition, force turnovers.

Prevent Short GK Distribution: Force long balls, allowing BPDs and BWM to win second balls.

Step Up More/Get Stuck In: Assert physical dominance.

Invite Crosses: Trust central defenders to deal with aerial threats.

Roles & Key Attributes:

SK (Isted): Distribution and command.

FB (Attack): Stamina, work rate for overlaps.

BPD (Defend): Composure, passing, anticipation.

BWM (Gilbey): Aggression, tackling, stamina.

CM (Support): Work rate, vision, ball progression.

IF (Support): Dribbling, movement, finishing.

AF (Vidigal): Off the ball, acceleration, composure.

Results:

League One Champions with 91 points, top-half finish board expectation smashed.

Bristol Street Motors Trophy Winner.

Fourth-rounds reached in both FA Cup and Carabao Cup, only losing to Premier League opposition.

Multiple players overperforming in goals/assists despite modest attributes.

Why It Works:

The high press and narrow shape ensure you win the ball in dangerous areas.

Short passing reduces risky turnovers from lower-league technical deficiencies.

IFs and AFs thrive against slow defenders, especially late in games as opposition tires.

Suitability:

Perfect for underdog and mid-table sides aiming for quick promotions.

Works best with mobile, hard-working midfielders and pacy inside forwards.

Defensive solidity comes from a compact shape, with the BWM shielding the defence.

Training/Match Prep Tips:

Focus training on teamwork, pressing intensity, and transitions.

Use rotation to maintain intensity over a long season.

Keep morale high with squad rotation, especially after cup runs.

How to Use in the Championship:

Retain core principles but adjust pressing intensity and defensive line against stronger sides.

Prioritize signings for pace in defence and midfield stamina.
