Football Manager 2026 Tactics - Leeds United Back in Europe: FM26 First Season Miracle
Leeds United Back in Europe: First Season UCL Finish in FM26

Game status

Taking charge of Leeds United in Football Manager 26, the aim was simple: survive the Premier League, build a competitive squad, and slowly bring the club back where it belongs. But this save went far beyond survival.

By the end of the 2025/26 season, Leeds finished 3rd in the Premier League with 73 points, securing UEFA Champions League qualification in the first season back at the top level. Arsenal won the league with 86 points, Manchester City finished second with 83, and Leeds came next ahead of Spurs, Liverpool, Chelsea and several strong established Premier League sides.

This was not a perfect season. There were heavy defeats, difficult runs, and some games where the squad showed its limitations. But overall, Leeds became one of the most dangerous and consistent teams in England.

Final Premier League Finish

Leeds finished the season with:

Position: 3rd
Games Played: 38
Wins: 20
Draws: 13
Losses: 5
Goals Scored: 63
Goals Conceded: 38
Goal Difference: +25
Points: 73

The most important part is the balance. Leeds were not just attacking recklessly. The team scored enough goals to compete with the top clubs, but the real foundation was defensive stability. Only 5 defeats across the whole league season is a massive achievement for a side that was expected to fight much lower down the table.

The league table also shows how strong this achievement was. Leeds finished above:

Liverpool
Chelsea
Spurs
Bournemouth
Aston Villa
Manchester United
Newcastle
Brighton

Manchester United finished 16th, Wolves were relegated, and Burnley and Sunderland also went down. In that kind of chaotic Premier League season, Leeds did not just survive the storm. They used the storm as a ladder.

Save Details

This save was played on Football Manager 26 using the original database with the Premier League selected.

Important save information:

Game Name: Swagata Banerjee - Leeds1
Database: Medium
Selected Nation: England, Premier League only
In-Game Editor Allowed: Yes
In-Game Editor Used: No
Save count shown: Saved 3 times

That last part matters. The save was not built around constant reloads or match manipulation. The game file shows the in-game editor was allowed, but not used. The season stands on its own.

Early Season: Fast Start, Then Reality Check

Leeds began the league campaign in excellent fashion.

The first Premier League match was a 3-1 home win against Everton, which gave the squad immediate belief. Then came a difficult away fixture against Arsenal, where Leeds lost 2-0. That was a reminder that this was still a newly promoted/rebuilding side trying to compete with elite teams.

After that, Leeds found rhythm again:

1-1 vs Newcastle
1-1 vs Fulham
3-1 away win vs Wolves
1-0 home win vs Bournemouth

That early run was very important. Instead of collapsing after the Arsenal defeat, the team settled into the league and started picking up points consistently.

Big Wins and Statement Results

The season had several results that proved Leeds were not just lucky passengers in the top four race.

The biggest statement win was the 1-0 home victory over Liverpool in December. Liverpool finished 5th and scored 81 league goals, so beating them while keeping a clean sheet was one of the best results of the campaign.

Other major wins included:

3-1 vs Manchester United
1-0 vs Manchester City
4-0 away vs Aston Villa
6-3 away vs Manchester United
2-0 vs Aston Villa
2-1 vs Nottingham Forest
2-0 vs Sunderland
1-0 vs Wolves
1-0 vs Burnley

The 6-3 away win at Old Trafford was pure chaos, but in a good way. That is the kind of result FM players remember from a save. Not a tidy tactical masterclass, more like “every highlight is a heart attack but somehow we are cooking.”

Tough Matches and Weak Points

The season was not flawless. Leeds had some rough results too.

The worst league result was probably the 3-0 defeat away to Manchester City in November. There was also a painful 0-2 home defeat against Arsenal in January and a 0-1 away defeat to Bournemouth late in the season.

The cups also showed the difference between being a strong league side and being a complete elite squad. Leeds reached the Carabao Cup Final, losing 2-1 to Arsenal at a neutral venue. That final still deserves credit because reaching a domestic final in the first season is a strong achievement.

The FA Cup run ended in the fifth round with a 3-0 defeat away to Chelsea.

So the picture is clear: Leeds had the quality to beat big sides, but not yet the depth to dominate every competition. That is realistic and actually makes the save more believable.

Key Players

The squad screen shows several major performers across the season.

Dominic Calvert-Lewin

Dominic Calvert-Lewin was the main attacking reference point.

Appearances: 43
Goals: 23
Assists: 7
Average Rating: 7.10

He was the clear focal point of the attack. His goals carried Leeds through tight games, and his physical presence gave the team a reliable outlet when under pressure. In a season where Leeds often had to compete against stronger squads, having a striker who could convert chances was essential.

Jayden Bogle

Jayden Bogle was one of the standout players of the entire save.

Appearances: 41
Goals: 7
Assists: 11
Average Rating: 7.23

For a wing-back/full-back, those numbers are outstanding. He was not just defending the flank; he became one of the most important attacking weapons in the system. His output from wide areas helped Leeds stretch games and create chances without depending only on central play.

Anton Stach

Anton Stach gave the team power, height, and midfield control.

Appearances: 44
Goals: 7
Assists: 3
Average Rating: 6.83

His ability to play as a defender, defensive midfielder, or central midfielder made him valuable across the season. In a long Premier League campaign, players like this are gold. Not always flashy, but tactically important.

Pascal Struijk

Pascal Struijk was a key defensive figure.

Appearances: 44
Goals: 2
Assists: 1
Average Rating: 6.95

Leeds conceded only 38 goals, and Struijk was a big part of that. His consistency helped the team stay compact even against stronger opponents.

Lucas Perri

Lucas Perri played 47 matches and finished with a 6.94 average rating. A goalkeeper does not always get the headline, but in a top-four overachievement save, the keeper usually has to deliver big moments. Perri did that.

Other Important Contributors

Joe Gelhardt contributed 8 goals and 4 assists across 43 appearances.
Noah Okafor added 10 goals and 8 assists.
Facundo Buonanotte delivered 9 goals and 8 assists.
Gabriel Gudmundsson added 3 goals and 8 assists from the left side.
Mateo Joseph scored 13 goals, showing excellent squad value.

This was not a one-man season. Calvert-Lewin was the main scorer, but the support cast made the tactic sustainable.
