When I first started playing FM 2009, I immediately loaded up an MLS-only league. I've never been one to take over a dominant team, so I searched around and found out that I could take the helm of an expansion team in Toronto FC. This was my optimal starting job because I love to build/rebuild teams from the ground up. About this time I started to search the web for various FM resources because my general football knowledge is lacking, let alone my knowledge for tactics in FM 2009.
Once I settled into fmscout.com and started reading a lot on the forums, I decided it was time to play some real football. I started up a new league, this time strictly England from the Premier League down to the Championship just below it. Once again, I didn't want to take over a team that would dominate on talent alone, but I also didn't want to get my ass handed to me all the time. Can you imagine my horror when I looked at the skill level of the players and coaches in the Premier League compared to the inept MLS? I settled on Man City because I like their kit colors. And the fact that they have a ridiculous budget. 8)
After a few months (game-time) I felt like I still had a lot to learn, however, so I went back to the drawing board again. This time I went with a compromise between my two previous attempts. I was going to stay in England, but I didn't want to start in the Premier League. By this time, I was really starting to enjoy everything that FM09 has to offer, so I went for the gusto.

I started poking through the teams in the Blue Square North and South for a team that I could really sink my teeth and time into. Without a lot of deliberation, I settled on Newport County. My thought process went as follows: I smoke (in the process of quitting) menthols, Newports in particular - and I like the team nickname of Exiles. Sold!
So much for the little background, eh?
