December: A Second Chance...

This month was just pure perfection from start to finish, which is just what we needed after having exited the Champions League at the group stage. Even though this was predicted, it was still disappointing to exit the competition without getting to the nitty gritty stage. However, as a result of exiting the competition at that stage, we have been given the opportunity to continue our European journey through the means of the Europa League. This is a competition I am confident we can do well in and I would love to see us go to the very end and be the eventual winners. If we were to go the whole way, it would bring in a lot of money into the club which would be needed to continue to re-emergence of the club as a reputable club in European football. From a selfish point of view I can only see it doing my own reputation good in terms of increasing my stature amongst other managers so I could become contenders for any vacant managerial roles at other “higher calibre” clubs. I don’t want to stay at Newcastle United for the long term but instead so far this season, I have turned down four opportunities to sign a new contract and have not acted on being bookies favourite to take over at Arsenal. Instead I will play out the season and see how things turn out before deciding on my own future.
On reflection, I cannot praise the defenders enough as they only conceded one goal throughout the month, which is some feat to say we came up against Spurs and Chelsea at the end of the long month. I have continued to rotate the defenders to keep them fresh as we are in for a long season, with us still competing on all competitive fronts. The younger defenders have also been given an opportunity to show what they can bring to the club and that the future for Newcastle United is a bright one. Marcelo’s (right back) attributes are starting to shoot up as he has been preferred Tomas Kalas so he has been getting a lot of game time; he also looks like he will continue to keep him out of the squad for the long term. Ibrahim Aurier appears to broken up the centre back partnership of Jamaal Lascelles and Marcus Berglund which was so solid last season. Aurier has put in some great performances and has become my first choice centre back to partner either Lascelles or Berglund. The lads at the other end of the pitch have continued to put in great performances, all apart from our top goal scorer from last season, Jerome Sinclair. He is being kept out of the team by Christos Mantalos but when given the opportunity to start or to feature later in a game, he is having no impact and just not performing. He has been very disappointing so far with only two goals in sixteen appearances so far this season. This will need to drastically improve as I will not hesitate to move him on; he was signed for £1.3 million by myself and is now worth £8.5 million so I am sure the board won’t mind making a tidy profit on the sale.
