Live Melbourne Heart vs Melbourne Victory

Welcome ladies and gentlemen to one of the most anticipated games of any A-league season, and the first chance for the fans to get a closer look at how these teams will set up for the rest of the campaign. Your commentators for this match are Alan Matthews and Clive Johnson.

Alan – What a match we have on our hands today!

Clive- Right you are Alan, I am really looking forward to see how these two fierce rivals face off against each other in the opening day fixture.

Alan- Let’s take a look at the teams.

Clive- First for Victory, they are fielding one of the strongest sides on paper in the league, and this makes them, at least in my view, one of the favourites for the title. All eyes will be on new signing Matthew Thompson who starts in the middle of the park, while winger James Troisi looks to be the star of this team, especially judging on his preseason performances. In defence, captain Mark Milligan will definitely be a rock, and will command his centre back partnership. Victory look very thin however due to the international break taking place at this time, meaning that they are missing the bulk of their team, and they only have one substitute, a factor which could play a massive role later on in the game.

Alan- Now, Melbourne Heart. Heart are a more experienced side who are full of energy and skill, and are very capable of giving the favourites, Victory, a run for their money. Mate Duagndzic is the man who will be the figurehead for Heart’s attack, and will be vital if they are to come away from here with any kind of result. At the other end of the pitch, they will be relying on Diego Barcena in goal to keep out everything Victory throw at them, as their defence is ageing, with both their starting centre backs over 30.

Clive- Anyway, enough preamble, let’s get to the match!

4 mins CHANCE- Early attack here for Victory, Nabbout threads a ball onto the wing for Mark Milligan, who crosses. Its met by Troisi, but Barcena makes a good save.

16 mins CHANCE- Heart have a decent opportunity from a free kick as Dugandzic puts a good ball in, which is met by Kisnorbo, but McGair manages to hold it.

19 mins GOAL- A breakthrough for Victory! It comes through a corner from James Troisi, which was poorly cleared by Orlando Engelaar, and it fell to centre back Pablo Contreras to tap home with ease.

21 mins GOAL- Heart reply just 2 minutes later with a goal of their own! A poor pass eventually finds its way to Hoffman, who is tackled well by Leijer, but is not cleared, and striker Harry Kewell pounces on it, hitting a powerful effort with his right foot into the top corner.

23 mins CHANCE- Barcena has to make another save for Heart, this time from his own player as Kisnorbo unintentionally sends a header in his direction.

30 mins GOAL- Victory’s pressing has led to another goal, and it comes from guess who, new signing and former Heart’s player, Matthew Thompson. Thompson played a one two with Mitch Nicolls, before spreading the ball wide to Milligan, who chips the ball over the defence, allowing Thompson to fire a half volley into the back of the net. Milligan’s 2nd assist of the game has given Thompson an assured place on the back pages if the score line stays the same.

38 mins CHANCE- Heart doing everything they can in order to get back into this game. After a few corners, the ball found Engelaar, who shot straight at McGair.

45 mins HALF TIME- As the half draws to a close, it is Victory who have the upper hand going into the 2nd half, leading by 2 goals to 1. It is all to play for though, as Heart have troubled their opposition’s defence for than expected. Second half coming right up.

53 mins CHANCE- Engelaar is troubling Victory again, as he plays a good pass into Gerhardt, who forces McGair into his best save of the game.

65 mins CHANCE- Heart were almost caught napping there as Victory launch a quick counter attack and pick out Archie Thompson just outside the box, who hits a curler goal wards, but has his effort just pushed wide.

67 mins CHANCE- A good opportunity wasted, but some encouraging signs for Heart, as Engelaar hits a first time shot wide when in tons of space.

77 mins CHANCE- Victory attempting to kill the game off here, and come very close, as Trosi plays a clever ball into Mitch Nicolls, who hits a great shot which skims the post as it goes wide.

85 mins CHANCE- Dugandzic nearly puts Heart back on level terms as he tries to play a pass to Wielaert, who is unmarked and is facing an empty net, but the pass is intercepted and the move breaks down.

89 mins CHANCE- What looks to be the last chance of the game fell to Heart, but they were unable to take it, as Kalmar took too long to take his shot, and was tackled by Broxham.

90+2 mins FULL TIME- The match has ended here with Victory as the winners, after goals from Contreras and Thompson either side of a Kewell goal for Heart, gave them the bragging rights in this contest. What a great match, and so many more great matches to come this year, all of which will be reported to you live, on The Age.

Victory tied on points for first

Melbourne Victory have started the season of very well by signalling their intent to the other teams in the league by being tied on points with 1st place at the end of the opening month of the season, after which they have played 3 games in the league.

2 Melbourne Victory- Mebourne Heart 1

Goals- Pablo Contreras 19 Harry Kewell 21
Matthew Thompson 30

The highly anticipated first game of the season for both of these local rivals lived up to the billing, after a highly action packed first half, where Hearts striker Kewell equalised after defender Pablo Contreras opening the scoring for Victory, who retook their lead exactly half an hour into the game, when former Hearts' player, Matthew Thompson fired home on his debut to give his side the crucial lead, which they held through the second half, and the match ended 2-1 to Victory.

0 Adelaide United FC- Melbourne Victory 1

Goals- Archie Thompson 75

Victory played their 2nd game of the season away from home, in what would prove to be a fairly drab encounter, with both sides cancelling each other for most of the game. The breakthrough didn't come until the 75th minute when veteran striker, Archie Thompson was slipped through, and he poked a neat finish past the helpless opposition keeper. The win was however, slightly overshadowed by the injury to Victory midfielder, Mitch Nicolls.

3 Melbourne Victory - Brisbane Roar 1

Goals- Leigh Broxham 8 Caleb Folan 41
Mark Milligan (pen) 32
Marko Pantelic 37

Another first half goal fest led to an exciting encounter at AAMI Park in Melbourne. The first goal came via a great cross from Milligan, which was met by Leigh Broxham at the far post. Milligan then went on to score himself, after Victory were awarded a penalty in the 32nd minute, which he coolly tucked away without hesitation. New signing Marko Pantelic put away the 3rd on his debut, and assured a Victory win, despite a 41st minute consolation goal from Caleb Folan.

League Table

Manager Notes

Overview-
A really impressive start to the season for us, which not only produced 3 good wins against strong sides, but boosted our the squad's confidence massively, and has made them believe that the title is a realistic target for us this season.

Player of the Month

There was one stand out player this month, and that was our captain Mark Milligan. Mark put in some top quality performances this season, both attackingly and defensively, getting a goal and 2 assists, whilst remaining a rock in our back line, which was as a whole, very impressive.

In Other News…

Nachester City got yet another tough draw in the Champions League, with s trip to the Nou Camp the big fixture in that group. The likes of Real Madrid and Juventus were also drawn together, while Didier Drogba return to Stamford Bridge is the highlight of Group G.

Pressure rises on Jose Mourinho after a poor opening to the league, which sees his team outside the top 4.

England complete a 5-0 thrashing of Moldova to put themselves top of their qualifying group, while Portugal are the biggest side outside of the Top 2 in their group so far.
A good start there mate keep it up
