Clement Grenier was in great form this month, scoring 4 goals and pitching in an assist and striking up a deadly partnership with Miralem Pjanic in Totti's new tactics.

After a September in which AS Roma steamrolled all of their opposition, the month of October heralded a few sterner tests for the capital city side. However, the Giallorossi stayed strong, and, despite a few stumbles, managed to come out of the third month of the year with another set of very positive results.
The first two months of the game were polar opposites. At home to Parma, many people expected the Romans to dismantle their opposition and take away a commanding three points. However, much like the match against Sassuolo, Roma struggled to break down the Crociaiti's midfield, owing their victory to a second half wonder strike from Adem Ljajic.
Against Udinese, Francesco Totti's men looked an entirely different team. Coming out with a certain swagger and passing quickly in the final third, the Giallorossi put four first half goals past Andreas Isaksson to ensure a rampant victory.
This match marked the beginning of an important tactical shift for Totti; from the usual diamond midfield with 2 strikers, AS Roma had lined up with 1 holding midfielder, 2 central midfielders, two attacking midfielders, and a striker. This tactic especially gave Clement Grenier and Miralem Pjanic license to dominate games in advanced areas; the two rapidly became known as the dynamic duo of the Stadio Olimpico.
The new formation did experience some stumbles, starting with the match against Schalke 04. Up 2-0 with just ten minutes remaining, it seemed Roma had the result in the bag. However, Sebastien Corchia was shown a straight red card, and Klaas-Jan Huntelaar and Gabriel Barbosa scored 84' and 90+1' goals to give both teams just a point.
Though the Scudetto holders were back to their usual selves against Palermo and Chievo Verona, outscoring the teams 6-1 combined, they again struggled in the Derby della Capitale against SS Lazio. Though Roma had the better of the match, Federico Marchetti made a string of strong saves to keep the score down at 0-0.
Sadly, in a training session during the last day of the month, Adem Ljajic picked up a double hernia that will rule him out for 2-3 months. The Serbian striker had been in great form in October, scoring 4 goals, and his presence will sorely be missed. Now, the likes of Alvaro Morata, Sebastian Giovinco, and the surprisingly rarely-used Jordan Rhodes will have to step into the boots of last season's top scorer.
November will be Roma's toughest month yet; a rematch with Schalke in the Champions League looms, this time in Germany, before the Giallorossi will have to take on AC Milan in the San Siro before welcoming powerhouses Juventus. After this, Totti's men will entertain Spanish side Valencia CF before closing out the month on the road to AFC Fiorentina.
Until then, however, Roma continues to go strong in the Serie A and Champions League; the standings for both look as follows:
Serie A
UEFA Champions League
