Manchester United are hopeful of signing Southampton's Luke Shaw this summer, after sources close to the south coast club told BBC Sport that the inquiry from Old Trafford for the left-back from new manager Eric Cantona still "remains on the table."

The Daily Mirror reported that Eric had lodged a £20.75 million bid for Shaw only after a few days into his career as Manchester United manager, but most sources say the offer as not been sent.

United's hopes of signing Shaw were dented by the declaration from Saints' new owner Katharina Liebherr that she would not sanction the sale of any of the club's prized players in the recent transfer window.

However, sources close to the Saints indicate United have made it clear that their interest in Shaw, 18, remains strong - although they could face competition from Chelsea, who are reported to be interested in the player, a graduate of the Southampton youth team set-up.

Shaw, who has represented England at Under-21 level, is set to be a star player for Southampton this season and is thought to be in contention to make Roy Hodgson's senior squad for the 2014 World Cup.

He'd be a great replacement for Evra! And he's very promising.

I don't rate Buttners on the game or in the real world! Shaw would be a fantastic signing for any club, lets hope you can get him in asap.

I've never had Buttner be good enough to be first choice for me - and I dont think he can. Maybe get Shaw, or Coentrao? In my MUFC save he was transfer listed and I got him for only 5 mil. And he played good enough for me

Nemanja Vidic will leave Manchester United on a free transfer at the end of the 2013/14 season. After 8 successful years at the Red Devils the rock at the back has claimed 15 trophies in his time at Old Trafford.

The £7,000,000 man has given at least ten times his price he was bought for back to United with countless tackles putting all of his body on the line, and netting 15 vital goals in his 168 games for Manchester United.

"I never could have imagined winning 15 trophies and I will certainly never forget that fantastic night in Moscow, memories that will live with me and the fans forever. However, I have decided that I will move on at the end of this season. I want to challenge myself again and try to make the best of myself in the coming years."

Vidic has said he won't be joining another English outfit, but despite him being 32 come the end of the season, he will be looking abroad to further his career. His previous club Spartak Moscow have also had keen interest in bringing Nemanja back to Russia.

Despite all the speculation about where the Serbian is going, Vidic has said all his efforts are still focused on performing for Manchester United in the next season. "I am now going to focus all my efforts on playing for Manchester United and do the best I can for the team until the end of the season. I hope this stops any further speculation about my immediate future."

New manager Eric Cantona has had his view on the situation. "Obviously Nemanja has been a huge part of the Manchester United legacy over these years, and has contributed greatly. I wish I could say he will be easily replaceable, but there are few who could. The best thing we can do now is to get the most out of him in this final season, then say our farewells come May, and hopefully have our new Nemanja ready to grace the United back four."
