Striker Leaves; Another Joins
Liverpool FC reluctantly confirms the departure of striker Daniel Sturridge, who leaves for Wolfsburg for a fee of £13.5 million.
Daniel was a fantastic, valuable member of the squad, and the coaching staff and fans will be very sad to see him go. Often praised for his attitude in training by Brendan Rodgers, the 26-year-old Englishman became unsettled at the increasing amount of appearances he was making from the substitutes bench, and spoke to Brendan about this. The two kept a very healthy relationship, but Rodgers decided to transfer list the player eventually, and Wolfsburg and Valencia battled it out for his signature.
Sturridge only scored 3 goals in 25 appearances last season, so perhaps it was time that Liverpool looked at buying a new striker anyway.
And now they have. Christian Benteke joins Liverpool from Aston Villa, who finished in a fantastic 7th place last season. Benteke scored 12 goals in the league for them, and is famed for his physical strength. He joins for £12.25 million, and it is expected that the Belgian will take over the striker role from Luis Suárez, who scored 22 in the league last season, with the Uruguayan dropping back into an attacking midfielder role.
Now Liverpool have four strikers available to them - Luis Suárez, Christian Benteke, Fabio Borini and Rodrigo, but with Rodrigo and Borini looking to go out on loan, there shouldn't be much competition for a place.
