FIFA Ballon D'or Favourites: Top 6
The Ballon D'or competition is the globe's most sought after individual competition, and, as the shortlist of 35 has been announced, Sky Sports will give you a run-down on the six favourites to win the competition. The players' are listed in order of their average rating, from highest to lowest.
#1 - Lionel Messi - Barcelona
Last seasons' winner of the competition, Lionel Messi is once again the strong favourite to win the trophy. His performances have helped his Barcelona side to a top spot in La Liga, and they currently hold a twelve point lead over their nearest rivals, Real Madrid. Messi is currently the joint top leader of the scoring charts in the league, with nine goals in fifteen games. He also holds the highest average rating in the league - an astounding 8.47. He has five assists in the league, and three Man of the Match awards, and this doesn't even begin to show how much the Argentinian deserves this award.
#2 - Andrés Iniesta - Barcelona
Messi's Barcelona team-mate, Andrés Iniesta has shown the world why he deserves the award just as much as Messi. He has really shown why he should be considered for the award. His playmaking abilities have seen Barcelona rise to the top, and one of the main reasons why Messi sits at the top of the goalscoring charts. Scoring four himself, and assisting his team-mates on three occasions, Iniesta has earned himself an average rating of 8.41 in the league. The Spaniard, still a regular in the National side at the age of 29, hasn't featured in all of his sides' games, but when he does feature, he has proven himself to still be one of the world's best.
#3 - Robin van Persie - Manchester United
A perhaps surprising inclusion in the top six, Robin van Persie shows everyone that he still has it, at the age of 30. He has never been in the top three for this competition, unlike the other two before him, and with the Dutchman not getting any younger, now would be the best time to get the award. His Manchester United side sit second in the Barclays Premier League, and the ex-Arsenal striker has eight goals in 13 league games, and has also helped his team-mates to score four times, earning him an average rating of 7.11. But it has been his performances in Europe's elite competition, the UEFA Champions League, that have really caught the eye. Despite not scoring so far for his side in the competition, he has won two Man of the Match awards, after some incredible displays and has achieved an average rating in the competition of 8.08.
#4 - Neymar - Barcelona
The youngest inclusion on the list at the age of just 21, Neymar has made the shortlist. Following his move from Santos in the Summer, Neymar has scored six goals in 14 La Liga games (one game less than Messi) and set up his team-mates on three occasions. An average rating of 7.66 in the league is very impressive, and the Brazilian has begun to pay back his £71 million transfer fee. It would surprise us if Neymar did win the award, but to have made the shortlist alone is a fantastic achievement for the youngster, who still has a whole career ahead of him in which to win the competition.
#5 - Zlatan Ibrahimović - Paris Saint-Germain
At the age of 32, Zlatan Ibrahimović is the oldest on the list. Much like van Persie, the Swede has never been in contention for the award, but some spectacular goals have shot him into the top five on the list. His Paris Saint-Germain side are sitting clear at the top of Ligue 1 by six points, and Ibrahimović leads the scoring charts with 14 goals in 15 games. His performances have earned him five Man of the Match award, and he has also set up his team-mates three times. His average rating in the league is 7.79, and he could well be on his way to beating Josip Skoblar's Ligue 1 goalscoring record, although at this time it seems unlikely.
#6 - Cristiano Ronaldo - Real Madrid
Having won it on one occasion (during his time at Manchester United), Portugal forward Cristiano Ronaldo has also finished runner up on four other occasions. Ronaldo would love to win the award again before the end of his career, he told Marca recently, but his performances, although amazing, have not been able to match up to those of the five before him. The 28-year-old has seen his team to a second place spot in La Liga, but Real Madrid sit 12 points behind the league leaders, Barcelona. Ronaldo has scored five goals in 14 games, and has set up his team-mates twice, earning him an average rating of 7.36. Still considered one of the world's best, despite losing his record for most expensive player to team-mate Gareth Bale, he is sure to keep up his form to the end of the season, and may have an outside chance of winning this competition.
