Deadline Day: 5 Biggest Buys
It has been a busy transfer window across the globe, with some top deals being made. As we have arrived at Transfer Deadline Day, we'll give you a run-down on the five most expensive buys of the last few months.
#1 - Theo Walcott - Arsenal to Chelsea - £39 million
The most expensive signing of the window was made by Chelsea, as they picked up Arsenal's Theo Walcott, but, like many that have gone before him, critics were there to curse at the price tag. Arsenal fans were angry at new boss Luciano Spaletti, as Walcott was a real favourite among them, and to sell to a rival club like Chelsea is even worse, one fan told us. But, several were satisfied, at least, with the money being brought into the club from the sale, with Spaletti charging more than the usual asking price for their star winger. Walcott joins up with many other English players at Stamford Bridge, but he is no stranger to foreign players. He has gotten off to a flying start, scoring 2 goals in his opening 3 games, with an average rating of 7.55. Walcott signs a 5 year deal with Chelsea.
#2 - Kevin Strootman - AS Roma to Paris Saint-Germain - £33.5 million
Dutch midfielder Kevin Strootman has been highly sought after by many top European clubs for a long time now, but he has finally moved away from Italy, and into France, where he signs a five year deal with PSG. The rich club had the financial resources to offer him, and he joins a talent packed midfield, including the likes of ex-Premier League boys, Lucas Leiva and Yohan Cabaye. He is renowned for his fantastic passing ability and great mentality, and he will surely benefit PSG, who currently hold the Ligue 1 title in France. Laurent Blanc's side are, however, looking for Champions League success, and with the squad that they have at their disposal, there is no reason why they cannot achieve it.
#3 - Rafinha - Barcelona 'B' to Wolfsburg - £24 million
The brother of Bayern Munich's Thiago, Rafinha, who was with Barcelona at the same time as his older brother, has moved to Germany. Wolfsburg clearly a know a talented youngster when they see one, and swooped in to buy the Brazilian. He is an ambitious individual, however, and with Wolfsburg not performing overly well in the league last season, he may want out if the trend continues. Perhaps not as well known as his brother, but he has the potential to be equally talented, if not more. The 21-year-old signs a five year contract with Wolfsburg. He spent the entirety of last season on loan at La Liga club, Celta Vigo, and played in each and every one of their league games.
#4 - Jesé - Real Madrid to Paris Saint-Germain - £23 million
Another one of the world's biggest prospects, Jesé, joins Paris Saint-Germain, who seem to really be splashing the cash this year. Joining from Real Madrid, where fans were sad to see one of their biggest youth players leave, he now starts a brand new chapter in his career, at the age of just 21. He is yet to make an international appearance for Spain at senior level, and he will look to change that in the near future. But the striker will have to improve on last years performances - he scored just four goals in 31 games for Real Madrid, which brought the transfer fee under question. He has now joined a title winning club, with Real Madrid having lost out on the title to near rivals Barcelona. Jesé signs a five year contract at PSG.
#5 - Éver Banega - Valencia to Manchester City - £23 million
Spain lost another one of their league's top talents, as Argentinian midfielder, Éver Banega, moves to England. Manchester City and Chelsea battled it out for his signature, but City won the battle, and he moves to last years underachievers, who, without any continental competition to play in this year, could only have lured him to their club with money. The 26-year-old, capped twelve times by Argentina, is known best for his passing, but he suffered a serious injury in a car accident in 2012, which begs the question - was the midfielders' progression halted by this injury?
