Stockport County Pre-Season
I decided give the lads numerous pre-season games to get their match fitness up and prepare them for the upcoming domestic season. I also wanted to see how our new players faired in the team. I decided that for pre-season I would text out the tactic down below;
We will be running a 4-5-1 formation with one holding midfielder who ideally will be Luke Watson, as I believe he can do very well there sitting in-front of our back four. As for my two centre midfielders, I'd like to play someone like Archie Love as a deep lying play-maker mainly due to his passing, whereas I'd prefer to play someone like Lewis Hawkins as our box to box midfielder as he has many good attributes and will be useful going forward.
For my wingers, it's pretty obvious that I'd like James Marwood and Danny Lloyd on either side as they have all the necessary attributes to be a successful winger. I'm really excited at the prospect of these two and I'm looking forward to seeing how they fair in the team.
My defenders pick themselves really. Lord had brought in a right-sided full back called Josh Brizell who undoubtedly will be my number one full back as he's very good defensively and can create a threat going forward. My two centre-backs will most likely be Luke Waterfall and Aristote Nsiala, who is probably our best player currently who Lord brought in for free. Our left-sided full back is going to be Newton as his experience will be vital.
My goalkeeper is going to be Cotman, he has bags of potential and is already a mature goalkeeper, so that position is pretty much already picked.
And as for my lone striker, I'm looking forward to see how Nat Jarvis does, so he'll probably be my first choice, but if he struggles for form or picks up an injury, our captain Phil Jevons can fill in that position up front.
Now I'll be honest, I've picked some rather tough fixtures for the lads, most notably we'll be facing Norwich, who finished 12th in the Premier League last season and have signed some very good players, but anyway, lets evaluate our results;
Starting with Gainsborough, that was a good solid win to start off our pre-season. Yes, we may be much better than them on paper and on the pitch, but it was a commanding performance from the lads. James Marwood and Nat Jarvis, two of our new signings, got the goals for us and overall it was very pleasing to see how well we performed after a lot of re-building.
Then we played Northampton, who are our feeder club. He played valiantly against a team in the division above us but unfortunately, they scored rather quickly and that completely knocked our confidence. We tried to get on level terms but they exploited us numerous times, and to be honest, we were lucky to lose by one goal.
We then were set to face Sunderland's Under 21's, who were going to be quite tough even though they are a reserve team. We took the lead through Danny Pilkington, who Lord brought in last season and by God, was it a great finish from a tight angle! We continued to battle to win the match but they got the equaliser 5 minutes from time but overall it was a pleasing display from the lads.
Then it was time to face Leed's Under 21's, who had a key figure in their squad, Matt Smith, who is a huge threat in the air. They bombarded us with crosses but our defence held firm and we won the game through a Phil Jevons strike. A great win for us there!
AFC Telford were next, a team County were beaten by twice last season, and even though I rebuilded the squad and we moved up a division, Telford punished us twice on the counter, which I was very angry about, but I guess the lads struggled on the pitch there as it was getting re-furbished.
And finally our toughest test, Norwich, even before I begin talking about the details, you've already probably guessed that we've lost. It was a struggle, I wanted the team to counter attack Norwich but our tactics were thrown out of the window straight away as they scored within two minutes, and they scored two more goals in the second half to win the game 0-3.
Awards
Player of Pre-Season
James Marwood
I've given this award to James solely based on the fact that he was always a threat going forward. If James continues to perform like he did in pre-season he'll be a huge factor in our domestic season.
Young Player of Pre-Season
Archie Love
Archie has really impressed me as he's really composed for a lad of his age. He's been consistent throughout pre-season and he has contributed to most of our goals.
