HERE’S TO THE PRESENT
Life as a Liverpool fan has been far from plain sailing in recent years. With the red half of Merseyside yet to touch the coveted Barclays Premier League title, Liverpool fans have now had to contend themselves with the departures of their managerial chief Brendan Rodgers and star man Luis Suarez, having come so close to securing the league title last season.
But perhaps last season was just the start of Liverpool’s journey back to the top of English football, with new stars Raheem Sterling, Adam Lallana and Jordan Henderson all proving to be fundamental to the Reds’ impressive start to the season.
No player carries quite the same pressure as Daniel Sturridge, who will need more than just a chicken teriyaki sub with extra green peppers to fill the void Suarez has left in order to fire Michael Laudrup’s men to success this season.
The ex-Manchester City and Chelsea striker has been grabbing all the headlines so far this season, scoring seven goals in as many appearances, and is hopeful he can make the Kop faithful forget about his Uruguayan partner in crime.
”It’s not that I want people to forget about Suarez as such, but if I can help drag the attention firmly onto the team as a collective, as opposed to who was here in the past, it shows we're doing a good job,” said Sturridge.
Players come and go, but the purpose of playing here at Liverpool is always the same – to win. I believe in my own ability, as well as my teammates’, and we have all the capabilities to continue pressing for the success we all crave for.
Can Sturridge continue this form throughout the season? He certainly believes he can.
”Scoring is my job, so I’ll certainly be battling for the goals to come as they have done for myself here at Liverpool. Not just me but Rickie Lambert too, who has proven he can score across all tiers of English football.
“But as I’ve said, the primary target is to win, but I’m having a lot of fun so far at Liverpool and we’ve started positively, so long may our form continue.”
Liverpool’s philosophy has remained largely intact too with the departure of Rodgers before the season started, with Sturridge praising the appointment and style of his new boss.
“I’m never one to produce an opinion on things that isn’t my business, but I believe Laudrup’s appointment following Rodgers’ move to the England national team has been a great move by the board.
“We all saw how well he did initially in replacing Rodgers at Swansea. He’s come to us now and maintained much of the style that impressed everyone last season. We’ve gotten off to a positive start and that’s vital for our confidence.
“It’s all about keeping this form up now and I think I speak for the entire group when I say that we’re all excited by the direction the club is going.”
From falling at the final hurdle last season, there is a real sense that the belief in the Liverpool camp is stronger than ever, with Sturridge, Laudrup and co. all itching to take a seat on the Premier League champions’ throne this season. Is this Liverpool’s year?
