February- The Slow Rise

Some clinical finishing meant we finally broke into the finals spots

So after a few months of torture, horrid form and job insecurity, we picked up 7 points in 4 games to finally climb into 6th, meaning if we stayed there we would play finals. Here's a look at the month in detail.

Our first game of the month was against cellar dwellars Brisbane Roar and we showed the gap in class after 34 minutes when the prolific Emile Heskey scored a header at close range. Seb Ryall scored the second goal on the brink of half time, and then Del Piero sealed the deal in the 65th minute. We ran out 3-0 winners in Brisbane.

Next up was the Sydney Derby against the Western Sydney Wanderers, and the game was rough with plenty of yellow cards getting dealt out. We took the lead in the 46th minute when Sebastian Ryall scored from a corner, and we didn't give up the slender lead. At the end of the night, we were kings of Sydney once more, beating the Wanderers 1-0.

The match against Melbourne Heart was a fast paced affair with all 3 goals scored in the first 40 minutes. Jason Hoffman opened the scoring in the 12th minute for the Heart, but Heskey answered from the resulting kick off. Hoffman wasn't finished and his goal in the 39th minute meant we were beaten 2-1 in a great match for neutrals.

Wellington Phoenix was our final task for the month, and although we looked to be going nicely after Jackson Irvine scored a stunner in the 47th minute, a mass tangle of players after a corner just 5 minutes later saw Jake Butler equalise for the Kiwis, final score 1-1.

Finally! After those 7 points we have moved into a finals position, 2 points clear of Perth Glory. Now with 6 games to go, we just need to keep a respectable record up to secure the spot.

Player Of The Month

Sebastian Ryall scored twice from central defence and takes out his second MOTM award, and he has become of the stalwarts of the side.
Things are really looking up now mate, well played. Not sure I like this Sebastian character though, who the hell does he think he is taking the lime light from dear sweet Emile?!
Ziechael Emile already has 3 MOTM awards :)) let Ryall have his moment :P

Sydney FC Pair Set For Extra Year

http://s40.photobucket.com/user/fzemdegs/media/c21ba462-c586-4290-a4ed-283ce2fe09f7_zps997d2a60.png.html

Sydney FC today announced the contract renewal of 2 ageing stars, with Sasa Ognenovski and Emile Heskey set to stay in 2016/17. The pair both have activated contract clauses having played 15 games and will most likely end their careers at the conclusion of next season.

37 year old Sasa Ognenovski is a stalwart in central defence, playing alongside Jurman and Ryall and forming a reliable back 3. The former Asian Player Of The Year will probably be relied upon once more next season despite his age.

Meanwhile Emile Heskey has been a revelation after signing earlier in the season. The 38 year old player/coach has scored over 10 goals so far and is 3rd in the A-League goalscoring after Matt Simon and Adam Taggart. He has also recently been instated captain and next season the striker will be relied upon to be the experienced head in the side as well as the leader.

Both players have been prominent this season, and will look to end their careers on a high in 2016/17.
CAPTAIN HESKEY!!!

March/April- Toughing It Out

http://s40.photobucket.com/user/fzemdegs/media/Untitled_zpsc1b534ff.png.html

The final 6 games of the season may have been frustrating, but we hung on in the end

March/April was a tense couple of months as we held off a couple of teams to secure that 6th place spot. Here's a look at the run-in in detail.

Our first task was against our rivals in the finals chase, Perth Glory. Da beast Emile Heskey opened the accounts just 16 minutes in, and then Josh Macdonald (a young striker replacing the injured Del Piero) doubled our lead 8 minutes later. Half time rolled on, and by the 70 minute mark it seemed we would run out winners. But then disaster struck. 2 goals in 4 minutes from Brosque and Gallas meant the game ended in a draw. Disappointing.

Our next challenge was the Newcastle Jets, our bogey team. The team we could never beat. Heskey got us off to a positive start, but just before half time Adam Taggart and Tom Waller scored in quick succession to give the Jets a 2-1 lead at HT. Jackson Irvine levelled things up in the 64th minute but Newcastle had the last laugh, with Joey Gibbs giving them the winner.

The defensively troubled Central Coast Mariners were up next, and once more we jumped the gun on them. Ranko Despotovic, Matthew Jurman and Jackson Irvine all scored in the first half an hour. Matt Simon and Marcel Seip got goals back for the Mariners but Pedj Bojic's 60th minute striker meant we ended up thrashing them 4-2.

The last game of March was a disappointing match against Melbourne Victory. After Ranko Despotovic's brace and a 57th minute strike from Milos Dimitrejevic, we looked set to smash the Victory. But then Jimmy Jeggo came out of nowhere to goal twice, and with 3 minutes remaining Brent McGrath popped up. The final score, 3-3.

3 points in our penultimate fixture against Adelaide United would guarantee us a finals position and we looked set to do so after Pedj Bojic's goal in the 20th minute. With 5 minutes remaining the players were already celebrating, and they got caught out by Sergio Cirio who scored a late equaliser. The 1-1 draw disappointed me as now we have to pick up a point in our last game.

This was it. Standing between us and a finals berth was the underachievers Brisbane Roar. We needed just a solitary point to finish 6th, but I feared for the worst when Jeremy Mayele scored for the Roar just 6 minutes in. Youngster Alex Polkinghorne doubled their advantage half an hour in and I saw my season slipping away. Luckily, Matthew Jurman kept it alive with a great header in the 50th minute, but the clock was ticking and I needed something special. Enter Ranko Despotovic off the bench. His long range blinder in the 76th minute drew it level after an incredible comeback, and we had made the finals! Ranko you legend.

So at the conclusion of the regular season we sit in 6th, ready to play finals. The Newcastle Kets managed to top the league, whilst the 3rd place team was Melbourne Victory meaning we'll play them in the Elimination Final next week.

Player Of The Month

With Emile Heskey missing a couple of weeks, I relied on Ranko Despotovic to cover and boy did he deliver. He booted 4 goals in 5 matches, including 1 that saved our season, and although the Serb is set to let Heskey back into the fray he did extremely well in the captain's absence.
Scoring for fun but you gotta stop letting them in at your end mate! Still, a point is a point, good luck in the qualification round (just won that in my player career on FIFA with Newcastle Jets :) )
Ziechael Yeah the defence is leaky but at least I'm scoring as well :)

AAMI Park Gears Up For Big Blue

http://s40.photobucket.com/user/fzemdegs/media/05d30701-2c17-419c-94ce-60df07aa2413_zps2fcca3a6.png.html

One of Australian football's fiercest rivalries is set to unfold on Saturday afternoon, when Melbourne Victory clashes with Sydney FC in the infamous Big Blue. The match is set to be held at AAMI Park in Melbourne, and promises to be a great contest.

Ever since the beginning of the A-League, this has been one of the biggest clashes of the season. This game shouldn't disappoint, with the determined Melbourne Victory playing a resilient, albeit ageing Sydney FC. The youthfulness and vigour of the Victory side should contrast well with the experience of the Sky Blues, and no position amplifies this more than up front for the 2 clubs. Due to injury, Victory's lone striker will be 16 year old Jordon Fletcher on debut, a huge contrast from the 79 year old pairing of Del Piero and Heskey for Sydney. Meanwhile, Sasa Ognenovski, Matthew Thompson, Ranko Despotovic, Milos Dimitrejevic, Pedj Bojic and Nikola Petkovic are over 30 as well.

Mark Milligan as the only 30 plus player in the Victory line up speaks magnitudes about the gulf in experience, but the Victory haven't exactly been overawed this season. Finishing 3rd in the regular season, just 5 points behind the Jets, showed their considerable talent and they lost a league-best 4 games. Decimated by injury in the latter half of the year, they will now rely on the likes of Milligan, Nicholas Ansell and Leigh Broxham to carry them over the line.

Sydney FC were in dire straits earlier in the year, as was the job security of manager Sean-Paul Lodovico. However, they turned it around and climbed resiliently to 6th by the end of the season. The revelation has been the highly doubted yet highly successful partnership of Emile Heskey and Alessandro Del Piero. Meanwhile, Bojic and Petkovic have been lethal from wing back and are sure to trouble the young Victory defence.

In what should be a close contest, I feel that the injury-plagued Victory team should still come out on top. A lack of pace for Sydney is there to be exploited by the likes of Chris Cristaldo and Jackson Durand and although they may be experienced, the Sky Blues are not very fast. I predict the final score to be Victory 3, Sydney FC 1.
At least the result are picking up now too bad about the leaky defence
Cappy Thanks :)

The Elimination Final

http://www.stadiumguide.com/wp-content/uploads/aamipark_front.jpg

Melbourne Victory XI (4-1-4-1)- Lawrence Thomas, Jason Geria, Luke DeVere, Nicholas Ansell, Shaun Pino, Mark Milligan (c), Christopher Cristaldo, John Buceto, Leigh Broxham, Jackson Durand, Jordon Fletcher

Sydney FC XI (3-2-3-2)- Vedran Janjetovic, Sasa Ognenovski, Matthew Jurman, Sebastian Ryall, Pedj Bojic, Nikola Petkovic, Rhyan Grant, Jackson Irvine, Milos Dimitrejevic, Alessandro Del Piero, Emile Heskey (c)

The First Elimination Final of the Hyundai A-League kicked off on the 16th of April 2016, and when Alessandro Del Piero rolled the ball to Emile Heskey, the 29,000 strong crowd got themselves ready for a great match of football.

The first 15 minutes saw no major incidents, but in the 5 minutes immediately thereafter the 2 sides exchanged near misses. Heskey's header rattled the crossbar in the 22nd minute from a Del Piero corner, and Ryall almost scored from the same situation just 2 minutes later. The Victory side began to get rattled as the Sydney players grew in confidence. A half hearted effort from Cristaldo didn't trouble the Sydney keeper and the half wore on with Sydney slowly making inroads. Just before half time however, disaster struck for the Sky Blues. Matthew Jurman's slide tackle is controversially given red, and all of a sudden the advantage is gone.

Matthew Jurman saw red in the 45th minute

The referee signalled for half time, and the Sky Blues trudged in 1 man down. When the 2 teams came back out, the Victory seemed to have their confidence back whilst Sydney constantly backtracked. Leigh Broxham's shot went narrowly over the bar, and in the 67th minute John Buceto almost scored the first goal of the game. But the linesman ruled it offside, and the score remained 0-0. Even after 5 substitutions, neither team could break the deadlock and to the dismay of both managers, the game went to extra time.

With just 10 men, it was perhaps expected that Sydney FC would stick it out and defend to the end. Their plan, however, was quickly unstuck by a piece of brilliance from Leigh Broxham. Confronted by 3 Sydney FC defenders, marking hard to retain the draw, Broxham somehow saw a gap and played a through ball into the centre of the penalty box. Brent McGrath jumped on the chance and put Janjetovic the wrong way. AAMI Park exploded into cheers as the striker wheeled away, gifting his team a 1-0 lead. It would prove to be instrumental.

Extra time ticked on, and eventually the Sky Blue heads dropped. It was enevitable when the final whistle sounded and victory went to well, the Victory. Final score 1-0, courtesy of Brent McGrath.

Now the Victory will play Adelaide United in another huge clash for a spot in the Grand Final. Meanwhile Sydney FC are out of the competition for this season, although the signs seem to be for a positive year next season.
Ah mate, gutted! Nothing worse than a first half red card. Nice to see Del Piero and Hesky linking up nicely upfront though, if only they could find the back of the net for you :(
