EXCLUSIVE: van Gaal interview

We spoke to new Manchester United manager Louis van Gaal in an exclusive interview asking the veteran Dutch manager all types of questions about his new job.

After David Moyes got the sack and Manchester United finished 7th, they needed a new manager who had both experience and confidence to lead the crumbling giants back up into the summit of the Barclays Premier League, and from the looks of things right now, they chose the right man, Louis van Gaal.

We caught up with the Dutch manager in an exclusive interview where we asked him many questions about his decision to take the job and all things Manchester United for the coming season, below is the full interview which took place yesterday as the build up continues for the start of the Premier League season.

Hi Louis and thank you for coming to this interview! Firstly, congratulations on getting the Manchester United job!

Hi and thank you for having me. It is an honour to be offered this job and I cannot wait to get started managing the best team in England.

So, you believe that Manchester United are still the biggest team in England regardless of the dreadful season they had under David Moyes?

Yes I do. It was a bad season for them but that does not mean that they are suddenly an average team. Manchester United are well known around the World and just one bad season doesn't change that in the slightest. You look at other clubs in the league who performed well but they are hardly mentioned around the Globe, however when I was in Brazil managing The Netherlands many fans there spoke about Manchester United. They are the number one club in England.

You mentioned the World Cup where you played a very successful tactic, will you be introducing this to the players at Manchester United?

I will be doing that. It worked well in Brazil and it will work well for Manchester United. We have layers here who fit in with the tactic and that is what I plan to use. Robin will known the tactic well and I hope the other players can get used to it too. We defeated some big teams in Brazil with this tactic and if the players all buy into it, we can show that same domination towards the other clubs in the division.

Going back to when you took the Manchester United job, was it a straight 'yes' or did you have to think about it for a while?

Hahaha no it wasn't a straight yes. I had many other offers on the table at that moment and I needed time to consider each offer before making my decision. I chose Manchester United as like I said before, they are the number on club in England and it was an honour to be offered the job and speak to Alex Ferguson about it. I have no regrets as I know the team will succeed well under my guidance.

You said about speaking to Sir Alex Ferguson, what did he tell you when you took the job offer?

When I told the club I was going to take the club, Alex rung me up to have a chat with me about my decision. He told me to enjoy managing the club as he believed I have all the needed qualities to guide the club back to where they belong. He also said that I can talk to him at any time if I need help but he believes I'm more than capable of running the club to a exceptional standard.

You also signed 6 players already, those being Ander Herrera, Luke Shaw, Paul Pogba, Stefan de Vrij, Daley Blind and Samuel Umtiti, do you believe that all these players can help you achieve your ambitions this season?

Of course I do, that's why I signed them. I know these players well and I know what they can do on a football pitch, and I believe they can lead us to the Premier League title. Ander and Luke were recommended to me by Ed Woodward and looking at them play, they are very good signings for us. Paul was an alternative to Arturo Vidal, but I'm happy I've signed him as he's a player with all round ability. Stefan and Daley I know well from international duty and they are two players who will give 110% for the club and finally Samuel has lots of potential and is a very sturdy centre half.

Many fans are comparing you to Sir Alex Ferguson, what do you think about this?

It is an honour to be compared with Sir Alex as he is one of the greatest managers to ever grace the game. I'd like to think that I have similar traits to him but every manager is different in some way and I am no different. But it is very nice to have the fans considering me to be like Sir Alex as like I said he is a true great which I am looking forward to speak too more.

As Nemanja Vidic left last season and Patrice Evra departed to Juventus this summer, who will you be choosing as the next captain of Manchester United?

I am still deciding on this and you will seen soon who I have chosen to be the next captain.

Thank you for coming to this interview today Louis, we appreciate it and good luck for the season ahead!

Thank you very much for having me here today.

Excellent update, very nicely written Josh!
Should be interesting to see who will be captain, however, I do expect it to be van Persie ;)
Great few updates and I love the layout of them! Good luck this season :)
Well, I wouldn't be too hasty and say he's going to play and be like SAF. I believe he's more of a short-term option, until Giggsy takes over ;P
Louis van Gaal laughed??? :P All seriousness, great interview, look forward to the season unfolding!

August Report

This was it. The start of a much anticipated season, and quite frankly, all the games this month were must wins. As the Premier League starts practically ha;f way through August, we'd only be playing three league games against Burnley, Stoke and Swansea, but our cup competitions also begin as we will face Championship side Rotherham away from home. The team must impress this month to show van Gaal that they deserve a place in the starting eleven.

Burnley vs Man United

The first game of the season is always a feisty affair, with both teams trying to put the form they showed in pre-season to practice is in the league, and van Gaal's side travelled to newly promoted Burnley in a match which Danny Welbeck got all the plaudits for. United dominated the early proceedings and got the goal they deserved as Mata had enough space to play a killer ball forward towards Danny Welbeck who confidently placed the ball past Matt Gilks in the Burnley goal. Welbeck got his second just before the end of the first half as he outpaced Ben Mee and like before calmly slotted the ball under Gilks and into the net. The first 20 minutes of the second half were yet again dominated by United with Burnley still not getting a single shot on target and soon enough Welbeck completed his hat-trick, heading in from a set piece which Mata swung towards the back post where the England forward was waiting. Welbeck got his 4th and United's final goal after Jones played a long ball which Mee misjudged allowing Welbeck to be one-on-one with Gilks and rounded up a sublime performance with a powerful strike. A great start for both Welbeck and Manchester United.

Man United vs Stoke

The Red Devils were at home for the first time since the start of the season where they produced another quality performance against Mark Hughes' Stoke side who have been improved drastically in the Summer. The opening 25 minutes were uneventful with both teams trying to carve open a chance. United won a corner after Rooney's shot was blocked by Ryan Shawcross. Mata whipped in the corner and Jonny Evans rose the highest and made contact with the ball, diverting it past Begovic and into the back of the net. van Gaal's men were in full flow now, forcing 3 superb saves from Begovic just before half-time. Early in the second half Stoke carved out a wonderful chance but Chris Smalling produced a sublime sliding tackle to take the ball away from Diouf. The game became rather possession based until the final couple of minutes where Rafael went on a mazy run before tucking away a beautiful curling shot into the bottom right corner to give United another three points making it two wins out of two.

Rotherham vs Man United

Taking a break from the league, United faced Championship side Rotherham in a game which van Gaal gave some of the younger players a chance to shine. It took until the second half for the first goal as Antonio Valencia swung in a deep cross which Scott Loach in the Rotherham goal misjudged as it bounced over him and into the net. Javier Hernandez shortly got the second as he was found in his favourite attacking position as Adnan Januzaj drilled in a low cross which Hernandez ran onto and poked it past Loach to make it 2-0. Young English forward James Wilson then got the third goal as he hit a 20 yard strike into the bottom left corner. Hernandez got the fourth and final goal as he headed past Loach from a Januzaj corner to round off a great performance from the Reds which sends them through to the next round.

Swansea vs Man United

The final game of the month was back in the league where United travelled to Wales to face Garry Monk's Swansea side. It was a very uneventful first half with only a few shots for either side. However, Wayne Rooney produced a bit of magic in the second half as he found half a yard before curling the ball past Fabianski and into the back of the net. Rooney got the second and final goal from an expertly took free-kick which Fabianski couldn't get enough on the save. Swansea did their best to pull a goal back to scare van Gaal's side but the defence held firm and was very organised to make a undefeated month for The Red Devils.

League Table

A very good start to the season, three wins out of three in the league is great. Although we are in first place, we've only played three league matches, so we still have a long way to go to see if we are capable of challenging for the league title or not. Overall, a very good start to the season.

Welbeck with four... in one fkin game?! Jesus - nice month!
Love the layout, Josh! Keep it up
Smexy lay-out. Nice to see everyone scoring, from defense with Evanns, Valencia, Rafael, whilst Welbeck, Wilson and Rooney also grabbed goals. Great start, yet to concede!
