Dutch duo reunite with former Netherlands boss
Stefan de Vrij and Daley Blind have joined up with former boss Louis van Gaal for a combined fee of 13.3 million pounds.
Both players had a tremendous World Cup as they helped their national team finish third and have caught the attention of many clubs after their performances in Brazil, however van Gaal has decided to bring them to Old Trafford as he believes they can really add something to the new team he is building at Manchester United.
de Vrij, who is only 22, has joined from Feyenoord for a fee of just 2.3 million pounds, which is regarded as a huge bargain by many fans and pundits a like. de Vrij had an excellent tournament playing in van Gaal's 3-4-1-2 formation and is backed to do well playing for The Red Devils. The player said the following about his move to Old Trafford;
"It's a dream come true really, as Manchester United are such a big club that I couldn't turn down the offer. I am very happy to be working with Louis again as he really brought the best out of me in Brazil, and I'm hoping he can do similar here at Manchester United as he's a superb manager who I believe can do well here."
van Gaal and de Vrij made a great relationship when on international duty which is one reason why van Gaal brought him in.
van Gaal's second signing is Danny Blind's son, Daley Blind, who joined from Ajax for a fee to be believed of 11 million pounds, which again is regarded as a bargain from both fans and pundits. Blind, like de Vrij, had a very good time in Brazil, making the assist of the tournament after he swung in a delightful cross to van Persie who headed in past Casillas.
Blind played well in van Gaal's wing back position which is a big factor to his eventual transfer, as the departure of Patrice Evra left just Luke Shaw to fill that position, meaning The Red Devils had not a lot of wing back depth in their ranks. Blind has also stated why he transferred here;
"I'm very excited to be a part of van Gaal's plans here at Manchester United. I enjoyed playing under him for Holland and I know he will succeed here too. He plays a formation I am used to playing in and he is making a very strong team which I am delighted to be playing in. It's a great move for me as I know I can learn a lot from the manager."
Blind was a fan favourite at Ajax but he believes that moving to Manchester United will help him improve as a player.
van Gaal has now made 5 new signings during his first few weeks as the Manchester United manager, with Ander Herrera, Luke Shaw, Paul Pogba and now Stefan de Vrij and Daley Blind joining the ranks at Old Trafford, the team has already become much stronger than the squad last season when they finished 7th.
van Gaal needs probably one more centre half before the season begins, with Mats Hummels still favourite to join the club although the player states he is enjoying his football at Dortmund, he is still odds on favourite to sign for van Gaal's new Manchester Unied.
