New signing Mario Mandzukic slammed home a hat trick against Inter Milan
Inter Milan | 0-4 | Atletico Madrid
Griezmann (25)
Mandzukic (52, 75, 77)
Embarassment was rife at the Giuseppe Meazza today as Inter Milan were humiliated by Champions League finalists Atletico Madrid. In what was expected to be a close match, the Spaniards ran away with a 4-0 win. A hat trick by Mario Mandzukic was the standout as the Croat tore the Inter defence to shreds in the second half.
Mazzarri made his first mistake before the match, starting multiple youngsters and reserve players in the first team. Inter simply couldn't string enough passes together early on and Atletico's resulting counter attacks were deadly. In the 25th minute, Handanovic parried Mandzukic's shot but Antoine Griezman pounced on the rebound and opened the scoring.
After the break, Inter and Atletico made multiple subs and the game seemed to swing back in Inter's favour. However a horrible mistake by Alborno allowed Griezmann to swing in an easy cross for Mandzukic to get to, and in the 52nd minute the Atletico lead had doubled to 2-0.
Atletico then went on a great spell of dominance, with multiple near misses. With time running out, Mario Mandzukic took it upon himself to seal the deal for Atletico, scoring in the 75th and 77th minutes to achieve his hat trick and utterly humiliate the Nerazzuri.
Mandzukic was awarded the man of the match award for his heroics, and Atletico left the arena in great spirits after dominating a respectable team in Inter. Meanwhile, questions must be asked of Inter after 3 disappointing pre-season results. The Nerazzuri will look to get their pre-season back on track against Borussia Monchengladbach.
