Despite only signing for the club in July, Lazaros Christodopoulos has come in and made an impressive start and has forced his way into the centre of our midfield. Only one assist to his name is misleading as his all round play in the box to box or deep lying playmaker role has helped Parma claim three points from three draws and sooner or later his play will help the side pick up three points by winning a game.
Injuries
Josh Brillante. The Australian midfielder who has been a key player for the team so far has missed the last few weeks with a thigh strain, although he will only miss the next week or so with the injury and will be returning to full fitness sooner rather than later. Mattia Minesso. The club’s number 7 is another player similar to Brillante who has missed the last few weeks with a groin strain although is very close to returning to full fitness. Marcello Trotta. Unlike the other two players in the treatment room, Trotta will miss the next 4 to 5 months with a broken foot, which is a cruel blow for the team, considering how he was starting to settle into the squad.Next Month
On paper, October looks to be a difficult month. Parma’s meeting with Chievo before the international has become a big fixture after Parma failed to win one of their first six games and the game against the Veronese side could be considered must win. Lazio on paper are a tough side but for Parma they will go into the side confident as the Roman side have struggled so far this season. However AC Milan have had an unbeaten start to the season giving Paolo Vanoli’s men a tough fixture to overcome at the San Siro, before Genoa visit the Ennio Tardini in Parma’s final game of the month.

Yes we’re bottom of the table. But I am not worried yet. We have only played six games this season, and we’ve got a young squad with some new players still trying to find their way. It’s not that the performances have been poor either. Overall we have deserved more than we have got, and eventually if we keep playing the way we have been doing we will get the results we are after. We should have beaten Udinese and Carpi but the quality they have in their sides have shone through and we were unfortunate to drop points, but again we’re not downhearted and I have every belief this squad can turn it around and pull ourselves up the table sooner rather than later.
Welcome to the big league. Results will pick up, but it might take time for the players to adjust to the upgrade in football standards.

With six games under the belt in Serie A, newly promoted Parma are yet to win this season, drawing three of their games, including a 0-0 draw with ACF Fiorentina, and losing the other three. The club’s only competitive win this season came in the TIM Cup Third Qualifying Round as they beat Pavia 2-0 thanks to two goals from Denis Baumgartner. However according to club captain Raffaele Di Gennaro, morale in the squad is still high, with the players being extremely positive thanks to Parma’s presence in Serie A after four years away. The captain maintained his view that Parma had endured a difficult start to the season, playing three sides that would be challenging for European football come the end of the season giving Parma no time to relax and ease their way into the division.
”Raffaele thank you very much for joining us. How are you finding Serie A and most importantly how is the club finding life in the top division?”
”You’re very welcome. Yeah it’s great to be back. Obviously I’ve played at this level with Inter before and just being around that quality of player back when I was an Inter player was fantastic. The training and the ability was top drawer and hopefully before long we’ll have players of that quality here in no time at all. The lads are enjoying it I think. They’re all very excited to be in this division and to be playing teams of the quality of Juventus and AC Milan is a dream come true for a lot of these players.”
”You say that it is a dream come true for the players but the fans have experienced this before, with the club having a history of competing towards the top end of Serie A. How far do these players realise this and is there a feeling of being under pressure to get back to that level?”
”Yeah all of the players know that the club has a lot of history. Obviously they know that the manager was part of the team that last won the UEFA Cup, he goes around parading his medal a lot. Haha no I’m joking about that one. But yeah of course we realise the weight of the club’s history. We know this club wants to be something that it used to be but no we don’t feel any pressure to get back to that level. The reaction we’ve had from the fans since we got promoted has been great and they’ve treated us like heroes. We’ve got a lot of work to do in this division and the fans are realistic enough to realise that we’re not going to go and win the title this year nor are we likely to push for Europe but that we are going to give everything we have to make sure that we’re playing in this division next year.”
”Is that the aim for the club this season then, to stay in the division? Obviously Paolo Vanoli won’t say anything but what are the players expecting themselves to achieve?”
”Yeah of course that’s what we’re trying to achieve. But then so are Cesena and Chievo who came up with us as are the teams that struggled at the end of the season. The first thing we have to achieve this year is achieving safety and then once we’ve done that then we can think about pushing on and trying to move up the table that little bit.”
”If you’re going to stay in the division then Raffaele, surely the club realises it’s going to have to start winning games pretty quickly?”
”Yes of course we do. But that’s not to say we’re not happy with how we’ve started. Obviously we would have liked to have won some of the games we’ve already played. Games like that Udinese game will live with us for a little while because we were winning and we should have seen it out and picked up the three points in what was a very good opportunity for us. Having said that nobody can say that we’ve not left anything out there on the pitch and given every game 100%. If the win doesn’t come soon we will keep fighting and I can promise the fans here and now that we will continue to keep fighting until we have that victory in the bag.”
”Is the game against Udinese the one that stands out in your mind as the one that Parma should have won over all of the others?”
”Yes but we could have won the other games. Against Udinese we were winning 2-1 with less than ten minutes to go and it all went wrong but then maybe that shows how inexperienced in the division this squad is overall. We should have seen that game out but it is done now and we have to just keep trying and focus on the games that are coming up and the games that we can go and grab a win from. We should have got something out of the Cesena game where we were level but we let it slip and really we do feel we should have won that Fiorentina tie because we had the better chances. But there is no point crying over things like that now because they’re gone and we can only win the games we have yet to play.”
”Finally Raffaele, you play Chievo in your next game, another side that came up with you from Serie B last year. Is this the game where you’ll get your first three points of the season?”
”Obviously we will be looking at this game and thinking that we’re playing a team that are just as good as we are and when I put it like that it means we’re playing a game that really could go either way. We’re confident we’ll get the win here but you never know and if we lose it then we’ll take a look at the next game as the one to go and win.”

A much better month where we’ve finally made our mark on this division. The results we have earned this month have been amazing and the only blotch on our record was a tight defeat to AC Milan so we can be extremely proud of ourselves. If we can continue this form into the rest of the season we’re on track to have a good season where we avoid relegation. We’ve got a big job to do next month but if we can keep playing the way we have done this month then who knows what is possible.

Two time Serie A TIM winners, SS Lazio have today confirmed that they have made an approach for Parma manager Paolo Vanoli, after sacking Stefano Pioli only two days ago. With the club sitting 18th in Serie A as it stands, the club would be looking for someone to guide them away from the relegation zone and towards the top end of the table as well as trying to take the club forwards in both the Coppa Italia and their ongoing UEFA Europa League campaign. It is not yet known whether or not Paolo Vanoli will take the job or has even attended an interview at the Stadio Olimpico and according to his current club, ”Paolo is concentrating completely on the teams upcoming game with Torino in Turin. There will be no further comment from Parma or from Paolo Vanoli for now.”
Possessing a squad that contains the likes of Marcos Rojo and Sokratis Papastathopoulos in defence, Lucas Biglia, Antonio Candreva, Willian and Felipe Anderson in its midfield and Balde Keita and John Guidetti up front, it has come as a shock to many that Lazio are struggling as much as they are this year. Their only wins in Serie A have come against Torino and Novara this year, whilst in the Europa League they are faring somewhat better, sitting top of their group after three games, after beating Feyenoord and PAOK Thessalonika whilst losing to KAA Gent.
Former defender Alessandro Nesta, who was part of the team’s title winning side in 2000 says that Vanoli would be a good fit for Lazio and that if he were to take the job, his first priority would have to be to inject some youth into the side. ”Italian football has moved on from its defensive, slow tempo stigma and for me Lazio in recent years under Stefano Pioli have failed to inject the right amount of youth in there team. Yes Pioli bought in some very good players in the likes of Willian but the younger players just aren’t there and the squad is getting on a little bit and that is what is costing the club this year. Vanoli would be a very good fit for me, he has proven at Parma that he knows how to handle a club that is desperate and passionate about it’s football and the job he has done in bringing them back to Serie A is fantastic and I would love for him to be in the hot seat at the Olimpico. He would take Lazio back to where they belong, I am sure of it.”
