So, 2018 brought with it the FIFA World Cup. The most coveted prize in world football came around on its four-year cycle once again. With our group of 18 players representing a vast number of nationalities, you can count on a few of us challenging for the ultimate prize in years to come.
However, the number of current senior internationals among us is not yet a vast one, and the number whose nation qualified for the FIFA World Cup was even fewer. We may have representatives of the national teams of Scotland, Northern Ireland, Republic of Ireland, Wales and Serbia, but only one player saw his nation qualify.
Eric Samuelson (ImDonkey) and Wales qualified for the World Cup, and Samuelson played in one fixture. Ultimately, it was a very disappointing competition for Wales and Samuelson, with a third place finish in the group stage knocking them out. Brazil and Costa Rica secured the qualifying positions, with Nigeria settling for fourth place.
Portugal went on to win the tournament, with star man, and captain, Cristiano Ronaldo scoring an incredible 11 goals in the process. Indeed, only one player has scored more goals in a single FIFA World Cup tournament, with France legend Just Fontaine scoring 13 goals in a remarkable 1958 edition of the competition.
Wales' Group
Wales' Only Point Came In A Draw Against Nigeria In Their First Game
It was a very disappointing campaign for Wales, with manager Chris Coleman since resigning from his role. There is not yet any suspected leading candidate for the role, but much interest can be expected when you consider the number of top class players at disposal for The Welsh Dragons.
Wales' first game was expected to be their least difficult, against Nigeria. The British side dominated in possession and shots statistics, but Nigeria were the team creating the clear cut chances. Wales' back-line were horrendous, in truth, and Jordan Obita's early penalty gifted Nigeria the lead. A spectacular Ola John goal from distance in stoppage time of the first half rescued a point for Wales, who just about hung on to a sole point after a difficult second half.
Wales' second game, against Costa Rica, did not start any better. A first minute goal by Joel Campbell put Wales on the back foot from the very off, and Joe Ledley's missed penalty after 16 minutes didn't help to settle the nerves. Barnsley striker Tom Bradshaw leveled things after the hour mark, but Berny Burke scored a winner for Costa Rica. Wales' lack of discipline was evident throughout the game and Neil Taylor was given his marching orders for a second bookable offence in the dying minutes of stoppage time.
Wales' last game was against Brazil and they had to win, and hope for Costa Rica to slip up, in order to have any chance of progressing.
Eric Samuelson (ImDonkey) started in his one and only appearance in this competition, against a very strong Brazil side. He partnered Joe Allen, Aaron Ramsey and Andy King in a midfield four. However, it was a game to forget for Samuelson & Co. as Brazil ran out 2-0 winners. A second half own-goal by James Chester set the Samba Soccer Side on their way, and Neymar's penalty secured the result, knocking Wales out of the competition.
FIFA World Cup Knockout Rounds
Portugal Were Rampant In Their Quest For The World Cup Title
Portugal were absolutely phenomenal, and blew every single team away. Ronaldo scored twice in a 5-0 thumping of Germany, and then scored five goals as Portugal smashed Ghana the the chime of 7-2. Not even Spain could stop Ronaldo's side as they marched on to the finals, and no prizes for guessing who scored the World Cup winning goal. Portugal's No.7 scored in the 7th minute to win the game.... how fitting. He now has 97 goals in 161 caps for Portugal, but that's now what is important here.
Our one and only Portuguese player,
Nininho (mgriffin2012), was overlooked for the squad. Despite two absolutely incredible seasons with Bradford, he was deemed to not yet be ready to play senior international football. 22 goals and 22 assists in his first two seasons of football, as a left winger, has given plenty of promise of what he can deliver in the future, and perhaps he will be involved in Portugal's defence of the title in four years time!
So that's the World Cup. Only one of us did play part in it, but you can be sure to expect that number to increase in four years time! Congratulations to
Eric Samuelson (ImDonkey) for making the Wales squad for this tournament, and for starting against Brazil! It may have been a competition to forget for Wales, but certainly a competition to remember for Eric Samuelson as his first taste of the world's elite football competition.
