Euro 2020 - Second Round
Seven of us remained in this prestigious competition, heading in to the knockout stages. We had representatives of Scotland, France, Holland and Serbia. How would our teams fair in the last sixteen of Europe's elite international competition?
Right, a quick overview of the games none of us were involved in.... Germany defeated Ukraine on penalties after a tense 2-2 draw, while Croatia required extra time to knock Greece out of the running. Norway were victorious on penalties against Scandinavian rivals Denmark, while England usurped Italy after extra time. Reigning champions Portugal also required extra time to progress, defeating Poland in the process.
Two of our players were part of France's squad, and the French were up against Sweden. Hugo Montgomerie was the lone man up front on the day, and scored the opening goal as France marched out 3-0 victors. Alexandre Leblanc was an unused substitute.
Zlatanovic Pogbadinho lead the line for Serbia against a resilient Turkey outfit, who had taken an early lead. Serbia equalised just before half time, and Turkey were then reduced to ten men before the hour mark. Zlatanovic Pogbadinho stepped up to the task and scored the winner with just under fifteen minutes remaining, to ensure progression for Serbia.
The final game involving our participants was an absolute thriller, despite the scoreline. Sybe Gillan-van der Putten was an unused sub for Holland on the day, while Thomas Murray, Wayne Kerr and Ewan Dailly all started for Scotland. It was a game of much attacking flair and some superb defensive performances, notably Thomas Murray, and also a very feisty affair. Ten yellow cards were brandished throughout the initial ninety minutes, and the extra time that followed, and Scottish captain Darren Fletcher was even sent off for a second bookable offence. The game ended with a penalty shootout, and Holland ran out 4-1 victors as Scotland missed two penalties.
Our seven participants had been reduced to just four. Zlatanovic Pogbadinho and Serbia had a tough tie against reigning champions Portugal, but the most interesting tie for us was France, and Hugo Montgomerie & Alexandre Leblanc, against Holland, and Sybe Gillan-van der Putten. No matter what happened, we would lose at least one more participant at this stage, but we were also guaranteed at least one participant competing in the semi finals. Who would progress?
