Seems Adriano likes to switch up his formations a bit :D Early days it seemed to be tough for the players but in recent times the results and goals are flying in bar the game against Vasco. Great to see Barbosa is in some form!

First Cup Game

Adriano faced off against Santos next away from home in the league. De Arrascaeta gave Flamengo the lead early in the match and Bruno Henrique double the lead before half-time. In the second half, Gabigol got in on the act putting Adriano’s side 3-0 up. Then in the 72nd minute Rodrigo Caio needlessly elbowed one of the Santos defenders during an attacking corner and was sent off. Eduardo Sasha pulled a goal back for Santos in the final minutes of the game, but Flamengo won and picked up a good three points.

In the Copa Libertadores Flamengo progressed into the second knockout round and were drawn against Paraguayan side, Club Sporting Cristal. Flamengo are tipped heavy favourites to progress into the next round. The first leg will take place in Paraguay at the Estadio Nacional on July 24th.

Flamengo drawn against Club Sporting Cristal

Adriano’s first taste of cup football was against Ponte Preta. Flamengo haven’t won the Brazilian cup since 2013, so Adriano wanted to really challenge and try to bring silverware to the fans in his first season. The 5nd round knockout tie didn’t go as planned. Flamengo played well and dominated the match but couldn’t find the breakthrough goal as the game ended 0-0. Flamengo will go to Ponte Preta’s ground for the second leg. Adriano did rotate his side as he had a league game coming up just two days later against Atletico Mineiro.

ScottT - We will keep pushing in the league, and I was delighted to finish top of the group, as it gave us a favorable draw in the knockout round.

Zed - I am aiming to win the title, and Gabigol is without a doubt our star player who could carry us to the title on his own, but he has a great supporting act alongside him too.

Tango - I will try to keep the spirits high in every game. RIver Plate were a tough opponent, I was happy we didn't suffer a defeat to them.

TheLFCFan - I do like to mix it up, I am trying to find what works best for my players and that will take some time as I am so new to management.

Battling Mineiro

Adriano had a tough challenge in the next league fixture against Atletico Mineiro. Mineiro had started the season well and were in 4th place in the league. The had two notable strikers; Franco Di Santo and Diego Tardelli. Flamengo attacked Mineiro right from the start of the game and it was Pedro Rocha who opened the scoring for Flamengo after 33 minutes. The left winger (on loan from Spartak Moscow) was given a rare start by Adriano. Pedro Rocha really made a statement to Adriano when he scored his second goal of the game in the 48th minute. Flamengo won the match 2-0, Pedro Rocha was the star man, and that win put Adriano’s side top of the league!

League Table
After an initial (slightly disappointing) draw to start the season, the team seem to be heading in the right direction.

Di Santo, now there's a name I haven't heard in some time! Superb work so far on getting to the top of the league!

Building a platform here with a good run of victories in the league. Still early days in the league though and the team need to keep up the concentration.

Adriano's First Signing

Filipe Luis was suspended for Adriano’s next match against Internacional. Rene came in at left back but the rest of the team remains the same that beat Atletico Mineiro. Adriano is hoping for more of the same, Pedro Rocha is given another start, and another chance to impress. Internacional’s danger man was Peruvian striker Guerrero who can be a tough player to face for any team. Adriano’s tactic was to mark him tightly and tackle him hard, giving Gustavo Henrique the challenge to man mark him during the game. After 19 minutes Rene picked up an injury and with Luis suspended, Adriano didn’t have a left back available on the bench, so he turned to Thiago Maia to fill in for the remainder of the match. There were more problems for Adriano as his other full back Rafinha was stretchered off after 35 minutes after a terrible challenge. In the 47th minute right before half time, Flamengo were awarded a penalty, but Gabigol’s penalty was saved keeping the game at 0-0 at the break. The game ended 0-0, Gabigol left frustrated as the Internacional goalkeeper Marcelo Lomba was the hero of the match.

Adriano made a move for a player he had been scouting, at he did it at the perfect time. The first signing in his managerial career was 18-year-old attacking midfielder Marco Antonio. The young prospect joined Flamengo for £1.7 million as Adriano triggered his release clause and signed him right before they were about to play his club Cruzeiro. The promising midfielder will feature sporadically this season, but with backup attacking midfielder Diego aging, Antonio could be the future attacking midfielder within the next few seasons earning a more prominent first team position.

Marco Antonio signs for Flamengo

The next league match was against Cruzeiro. New signing Marco Antonio was on the bench for the game. Left back Filipe Luis gave Flamengo the lead after the scored in the 21st minute. Flamengo lead 1-0 at half time in an even contest. In the second half Adriano subbed on Lincoln for Gabigol and the new man Antonio for De Arrascaeta. Adriano has shown faith in his younger players this season giving them ample game time. In the 69th minute Flamengo were awarded a penalty and Filipe Luis stepped up to try and score his second of the game, but he missed! Luckily for him the game ended 1-0 and Flamengo picked up another three points. Marco Antonio failed to make a real impact on the match but will likely start in the near future.

ScottT - We are starting to find better form now and getting important wins.

Jack - Di Santo use to be a good player, but didn't cause us any problems.

TheLFCFan - We are taking one game at a time, and the players know they most focus in each match, it is going to be a long hard season and every game is important.
A missed penalty two games in a row!? Wow. At least in the second game it didn't cost you the points, certainly need to work on pens in training though!

Just noticed that Gabigol hasn't scored for 4 games... #GabiOUT!

Adriano has started his managerial career in excellent fashion, feel like he should lose 50kgs and then he can play too :D

Important Win

Adriano faced a huge test against Sao Paulo away from home in the league. Sao Paulo are currently top of the league and have a talented team with the likes of Alexandre Pato, Dani Alves and Antony who is moving to Ajax in the summer. Sao Paulo is the only other undefeated team in the league so far and Flamengo would have to perform at their very best to earn a good result. Sao Paulo took the lead after 20 minutes. Pablo headed in from a free kick and Adriano demanded more from his players as he feared defeat. Just 2 minutes later Willian Arao scored a screamer against his former side, the perfect response from Flamengo! Arao has scored has absolute belters already this season but this one might be his best yet. In the second half Sao Paulo put the pressure on Flamengo and created more chances, but in the 89th minute Filipe Luis whipped in a cross from the left and Gabigol volleyed in to give Flamengo the 2-1 lead. He has been vital to Adriano’s side this season and once again score a very important goal. In the dying moments of the game Liziero two footed Gerson and picked up his second yellow to see Sao Paulo go down to 10 men and surely seal the win for Flamengo.

Willian Arao Goal v Sao Paulo

Flamengo face Ponte Preta in the second leg of the cup as they drew the home game 0-0. Adriano handed Marco Antonio his first start for Flamengo and Michael’s first start on the right wing this season. Willian Arao scored with Flamengo’s first attack of the game. Michael then made it 2-0 after 10 minutes. Marco Antonio then put Flamengo 3-0 up, scoring in his first start for his new club, a fantastic curling effort, the goalkeeper had no chance. In the second half Flamengo kept possession well and held on to their 3-0 lead to progress into the next round. A great performance from the new signing, Marco Antonio. Flamengo will face Atletico Mineiro in the quarter final.

Marco Antonio Goal

TheLFCFan & J_ames - We have missed penalties and Gabigol has gone quiet, I know I could still do a job now! If only I could sub myself on I would... You don't lose world class talent ;)

Teenage Sensation

Adriano faced another big test against Palmeiras. They were 3rd in the league (Flamengo 1st) and had been on of the best teams early on in the league. Adriano wanted to make a statement and what a performance his team put in. Filipe Luis opened the scoring after just 12 minutes. Then Everton Ribeiro added a second in the 23rd. At half time, 2-0 up Flamengo were dominating the match. In the second half Flamengo managed to score three goals in the space of 9 minutes to win the game 5-0. A very dominant win, 26 shots and 59% possession against one of the best teams in the league, Adriano is really starting to prove that he can be a top manager in Brazil. Gabigol slightly concerning as he failed to score or assist again, Adriano is considering giving teenager Lincoln the opportunity to start the next few games and see if he has any more luck as a scoring striker.

Filipe Luis celebrates his goal against Palmeiras

The next league match against Bahia, Adriano rotated the squad, notably starting 18-year-old striker Lincoln up front and resting Gabigol. Just 5 minutes into the game Gerson spectacularly rabona’d tha ball into the box and the teenage striker finished it off, what a great way to start the match and Lincoln makes an impact straight away, this young kid is a real talent. Lincoln scored again after 35 minutes to put Flamengo 2-0 up... after the goal Adriano turned and looked at Gabigol as if to say, “that’s what you should be doing!” Adriano’s side won the match 2-0 and remain top of the league by 1 point, just ahead of Sao Paulo. Lincoln was awarded Man of the Match and really took the opportunity he was given. Adriano will face Fluminense in the next match and he has a decision to make, start Lincoln again or Gabigol?

Gerson rabona assist to Lincoln

A Golden Generation?

Flamengo faced Fluminense in a local derby match at the Marcana. Adriano decided to start Gabigol over Lincoln even though Lincoln was superb in the last match. After a good first half the score was 0-0 and Gabigol didn’t really make an impact. Adriano decided to bring on Lincoln for Gabigol in the 65th minute, but it wasn’t a striker who made the difference. Defender Rodrigo Caio scored a fantastic header to give Flamengo a 1-0 lead after 76 minutes and 4 minutes later Bruno Henrique double the lead. A very impressive performance again from Adriano’s side, Flamengo are looking unbeatable at the moment.

Adriano received notice about his first youth intake of his managerial tenure, and it looks promising. There are several full backs and a promising attacking midfielder, this could be a golden generation for the club! Exciting times ahead for Flamengo who already have some quality young prospects coming through their youth system.

Youth Intake Preview

Flamengo face Ceara who before the match were bottom of the league. Adriano decided to start Lincoln and give him another chance to impress. Ceara shocked Flamengo by taking a 1-0 lead in the 31st minute. Flamengo were a much better side dominating the game but in the second half Ceara went 2-0 up after a Rafinha own goal. Flamengo changed to 4-2-4 and pulled back a late goal but it wasn’t enough to earn a result and Adriano suffered his first defeat in the league this season. A terrible result for Adriano but his side remains top of the league. He will want the team to move on quickly and bounce straight back to winning ways.

Amazing Comeback!

Adriano and his men faced Avai at home in the next league game and needed to win after the poor defeat against Ceara. Bruno Henrique gave Adriano’s side a 1-0 lead after 19 minutes. Flamengo played well, dominating the match and very late on were awarded a penalty. Lincoln was subbed on for Gabigol and the teenager coolly converted from the spot. Avai weren’t going to give up though and pulled a goal back just one minute later with only their second shot of the game. The match ended 2-1 to Flamengo, luckily Lincoln scored the penalty!

Adriano’s second signing of his first season was 18-year-old left back Lucas Piton. The young full back joined on loan from Corinthians for the season and give’s Adriano a chance to get a closer look at the young player before potentially buying him. Filipe Luis is a quality left back, but he isn’t getting any younger and Adriano seems to be a manager who is always planning for the future, with a keen eye for a promising young talent. Piton will be given sporadic playing time this season.

Lucas Piton signs on loan from Corinthians

Flamengo faced Gremio away from home, a side who have been doing fairly well this season sitting 5th in the league. Luciano gave Gremio a 1-0 lead after 10 minutes. Gabigol who hadn’t scored for a few games equalised in the 28th minute, and then went on to score two more in two minutes to seal a 10-minute hat trick and put Flamengo up 3-1. In the second half Willian Arao scored one of his trademark long shots, Bruno Henrique made it 5, and Gerson capped off an incredible comeback to seal a 6-1 away win for Adriano. Gabigol earned all the plaudits after the game, now he needs to continue scoring on a more consistent basis.

Barbosa... wow handy

More Transfers

Adriano decided to offload 34-year-old Diego. The attacking midfielder wanted to go out on loan, but Adriano didn’t see the point in loaning out a player who just wasn’t going to feature in his future plans. Diego was sold to French side Amiens for his transfer value, and Flamengo are paying a small percentage of his wage. In his prime he was a world class player, but this season he hasn’t contributed enough to make him worth keeping, especially with the recent acquisition of Marco Antonio.

Diego Sold to Amiens

Flamengo faced Atletico Mineiro in the Copa Perdigão do Brasil (Brazilian Cup) quarter final. Adriano’s side played the first leg at home, and in a cagey game a goal from Bruno Henrique was enough to seal the victory. Diego Alves made an important save at the end of the game to keep a clean sheet. The second leg will come after the next league game. Adriano will have to rotate the squad for the league game to keep his key players fit for the second leg.

Adriano added another promising talent to the Flamengo squad. 16-year-old, Miguel Silveira joined from Fluminense for just £200k. When Adriano saw his release clause, he decided it was to good to turn down, and the young player will come in to play for the reserves but could feature in the first team after a couple of seasons. He has the potential to be one of the best attacking midfielders in the league.

Miguel Silviera signs from Fluminense

In the league match Adriano faced Goias. He decided to rotate the team, but it ended with the same result. Gerson opened the scoring with one of the goals of the season, and incredible volley! Rafinha scored from a penalty and just two minutes later, young Lincoln made it 3-0. In the 88th minute Gustavo Henrique scored his first goal of the season, a strong header to cap off a 4-0 win, and Adriano’s side remain top of the league. Now the challenge was to progress into the semi-final of the cup.

Gerson goal v Goias

Griffo - He is doing really well isn't he? Some people have been questioning his place in the team and think I should sell him due to his inconsistency. He has 26 goals in 31 games and he is only 22, I am happy with his season so far!
