I've enjoyed reading this and am looking forward to your next update. also how old is eto now??
I was talking with Stam the other day about my pitiful defense and how I should really look to improve it during the January transfer window. We shared some laughs about how I need to find a definite upgrade at GK to make things easier for me against the top flight teams in the Premier League.

Well, the January window is almost closed and here's the one signing I went with:

I scoured the market for an upgrade at keeper, I swear. And while there were a few that I would have considered, they simply weren't better enough to justify paying a transfer fee. The one player that was a certain upgrade was available on a free, but his demands were so absurd that I couldn't afford them. And you know where he ended up signing? In the MLS for ~30k p/w. When I came calling he wanted damn near triple that amount.

So with no reasonable defensive upgrades, I decided to beef up my attack. If we can't keep teams from scoring on us, we will simply try to outscore them. :) I still have one week and about 2.5m left in transfer funds available, but I probably won't make another move before the window shuts. We'll just look again next season for an upgrade.

Summary

We managed to take the next big step up the ladder of relevance this season. We made it by the slimmest of margins, but a win in our final game had us finish one point ahead of 7th place Man City and we will make our maiden voyage into continental play in the Third Qualifying round of the EURO Cup next season!

Much like when we secured promotion to the Premier League, I feel that we are far from being strong enough to mount a major threat. With us making a steady profit over the past two seasons, however, we may be one or two big signings away from making noise both domestically and now continentally. Even if we get ushered out in the early rounds of the EURO Cup, I feel like we have accomplished a lot in simply gaining qualification.

As of now, Eto'o is 35 and he's pretty much nothing more than a bench warmer at this point. He must have enjoyed his stay at Newport so far, however, because we're listed as a favorite team along with Barca. :O
I find it quite intresting listening to how other people play the, my friends sit and cheat through the game, but I just read how other people do things and then try it myself.

Great stuff, you'll be goin for the treble in a few years.
Here's another screenshot with our most recent stadium upgrade complete. More than 14600 strong come out to watch what ends up being a demolition job against Slavia Prague in EURO Cup group play:

Newport County fans make the historic trip to Wembley and witness us take the early lead against United in the League Cup Final!

Summary

What was expected to be a small step into continental play ended up becoming a gigantic one. We burst onto the scene of the Euro Cup and did not relent until the semifinals. I would love to come back even stronger next season and try to make the finals, but we qualified for the Champions League this season!

With all of the non-league games we played, I didn't think such a high finish in the league would be possible. We kept rolling through the Euro Cup, however, and I found that the tougher competition was always when we played a team from the Premier League. A perfect example is that while we were dominating our Euro Cup group, we were stuck in the middle of the league table. It was actually a blessing in disguise as we got knocked out of one tournament after another because we could finally get some rest and focus on a final assault on the league standings. The end result was a phenomenal finish to end the season in 3rd place - one point clear of 4th place Leeds.

Our focus on defense this past season paid off, as we cut down our goals allowed by 20. Our scoring output was the exact same (68) and I will be focusing our transfer efforts toward getting another offensive weapon - namely a left midfielder. We will also keep an eye out for any stud defenders that become available because even though we finished 3rd, we still got handled easily by teams with high powered offenses.
I really like this story, keep up the good work mate, wish I could do something like this with my Walsall squad....can you give me any pointers for how to push up the table, I finished 7th in the first season.

Glad you like the story! I always find it tough to give advice because the beauty (and frustration, lol) of FM is that there is no one magic bullet that will solve everyone's problems. There is no golden tactic, and I certainly don't feel that it's my own tactics. If you want to experiment with the methods I use, however, follow the link in my signature to the LoL guide. I think it's a good foundation to start with and you can use it to develop what works best with your own team.
I tried to make the same jurny as you and ended up with droylsden... I used the tactic from the LoL guide, it brought me straight promotions from BS North to Leauge 1, my first season there also got of to a strong start but after a massive breakdown somewhere between game 25-40 i lost ground but managed to finish at third place, in the play-offs i made it to the finals but there i lost 2-1 against Charlton, not a disaster but still it stings... anyway, now I've had to week seasons in a row, finished 9th last year and I'm in 16th atm with about 10 games to go... I haven't lost any key players, actually i think my team is alot better then the one who almost won the promotion, but clearley we have stalled, I've tried mixing tactics and so on but haven't seen any lasting succsess, any ideas ?

I'll do my best:

How is team morale? I think this is one of the most undervalued aspects of a successful side. I've seen players with great morale play above their abilities and I've seen teams with great morale accomplish some extraordinary things. Do what it takes to increase morale if it's a problem - schedule easy offseason friendlies that get your players in a winning mindset to start the season and try to schedule an easy game any time you have more than one week in between games during the season.

How is team chemistry? This is another undervalued aspect of a successful side. Stam told me the other day that it's amazing how well my teams are doing, given their individual abilities. They've been together for so long, however, that I think it plays a positive role on the pitch. I don't have a dominant striker pair, although in fairness I think I have an above average one. My two guys have played so many games together over the past two seasons, however, that they just work well together. I've seen Adorjan pick out passes for Hasselbaink that make me shake my head. It's not because they're immensely talented or that we're playing against bad opponents.

How is match preparation? This is similar to the point about team chemistry. My guys practice and play the same 442 as soon as they join Newport County. I don't change formations before games and the only reason I change tactics is if we are forced to play shorthanded via yellow/red card or injury. Otherwise, the players are very comfortable in what they do. Again, this level of comfort has to have a positive impact on the team. I drew level with Barca during Champions League group play. That's not because we're even close to their level of talent.
well obviousley morale is down during the low points... but still my team seem to collapse in easy games eaven with good morale, and I don't think complaceny is the key here since most of the teams we play has a far greater rep and during my meetings with the assistant he says that we get scared against highly repped oppositions, someting I find strange concidering that all my player has decent, if not good, imp game attributes... and I must say that I have followed every instruction here but one (atleast during half of a season while thins were going south)... what I'll look in to is my strikers chemistry... I've had one monster who had been topscorer from BSP (he got the most goals eaven though he joined in december), but thining back, it all started with him getting injured... It's happened before, and during these times I've allways given up a couple of extra losses, but as soon has he got back so did the team... but the diffrence now was that I've picked up another class forward so he didn't play none-stop like before... since then I've rotaded up front alot and brought in a fourth striker whom also plays at a high level, but most of all, my moster hasen't been able to find that same level, and he hasn't hit 30 yet... guess this is alot of text about someting else then your newport on the blog, but i appriciate the time ! To sum up i guess I'll try to decide on two strikers and play them first hand... thanks !
I'm pretty sure this qualifies as my masterstroke thus far in my coaching career. Joining us next is Caca:

He will supplant Marcel Hasselbaink at the poacher position. Hasselbaink will be moving to the trequartista role instead and I'm betting on the fact that this will become our dynamic duo for the immediate future. This also gives me the luxury of moving my current trequartista, Krizstian Adorjan, to a super substitute role. Either that or I may even consider switching formations to a 442 diamond.
free transfer?? looks a player!!
