Summary
This season's results went a long way towards validating last season. As well as we did last season even I felt like it could have been a flash in the pan and I looked toward this season to see if we are really as good as we look at times. Outside of a pitiful showing in the FA Cup, I'd say we have shown that we belong.
The Champions League was a big surprise, much like the EURO Cup was last season. Other than two expected losses to Barca, we strolled through group play. And while we lost in the 1st Knockout Round to At. Madrid, I took pride in at least being able to hold them to a draw during both legs. We have qualified for the Champions League again next season thanks to our 3rd place finish in the Premier League and I'm hoping that we can have an equally good showing.
For our failure in the FA Cup, I did manage success in the Carling Cup. We had a titanic matchup in the semis against Arsenal that everyone knew was going to likely decide the winner, since the other semifinal featured two teams from the Championship. A 3-1 home victory got us into the Finals and we had to battle complacency en route to a 2-1 victory and the first cup trophy since we hoisted the FA Trophy in 2011.
Next season we continue the building process at Newport. We have already become a fairly popular squad but it's time to get even bigger. I've already asked the board to improve both our training and youth facilities and I think the gigantic influx of cash from playing in the Champions League will go a long way toward them signing off on the improvements. I'm also hoping that we can start talking about a stadium upgrade because we're selling out our 15k stadium as is. I don't have the option of asking for any more stadium expansions so I'm wondering if we will get the chance to have an entirely new one built. Again, with all the money we made this season (over 34m in profit), I have high hopes.
