Sunday 10th August 2014 – Arsenal v Manchester City (Community Shield)

With the first trophy of the season up for grabs, FA Cup winners Arsenal take on League winners Manchester City at Wembley Stadium. Arsenal will be hoping to win their first Community Shield since 2004, while City will be hoping to win back the trophy they won two seasons ago in a brilliant 6-0 win against Chelsea.
Arsenal come into the game with only one injury concern and that is back up ‘keeper Lukasz Fabianski. In the Arsenal squad will be their two big new signings, Ladislav Krejci who they paid £13.75m for from Dortmund and former Liverpool midfield Lucas Leiva, who they parted with £26.5m to bring to the Emirates.
Manchester City come into the game with four big injuries, with Sergio Aguero, Daniele De Rossi, Gareth Bale and new signing Wesley Sneijder all missing for City. With City’s main summer signing missing from the squad, they may turn to former Chelsea man Frank Lampard in the middle of the field, while City may turn to loan signing Gregory van der Wiel at right back.

First Half
A reasonably dull first half as both teams cancelled each other out, but one moment of brilliance from Cavani put Yaya Toure in the open to score and give City a 1-0 lead at half time. Samir Nasri had a goal disallowed just before half time for offside and the linesman made a good decision in ruling it offside.
Second Half
A scrappy second half saw both side’s waste possession and hardly any chances created. City had their best opportunity straight from the kick off as Yaya Toure missed a chance from 12 yards after a great passing move. Arsenal put City under pressure in the final 5 minutes but Llorente missed a chance with his head from a corner. As the final whistle blew, it was City fans who began to celebrate as their team were bringing home another trophy under Georgi Kinkladze. City have been hit with the bad news that Wellington Nem will miss the first 4 weeks of the season with a twisted ankle picked up during the game, and Luuk de Jong will also miss the opening fixture of the season.
