2016 EUROPEAN CHAMPIONSHIP REVIEW

It was a European Championship to remember as we saw all sorts of entertaining football and shocking results, ending with England winning their first ever European crown at the Stade de France over Italy by a score of 2-1.

Undoubtedly, Denmark were the Cinderella story of the tournament, and despite falling at the semifinal stage to Italy the youthful side surprised many be going so far, reminiscent of their 1992 run when they won the trophy itself.

Cristiano Ronaldo won the tournament's best player award, scoring twice and assisting five more in his four matches in France, and outstanding return from an outstanding player. Andreas Bjelland of Denmark won the most player of the match awards, with 3, while Portuguese striker Esmael Goncalves won the golden boot with 6 goals. The Dream XI is as follows:

Goncalves, Ronaldo, Bjelland, and Schmeichel were the pick of the players, each having outstanding tournaments for their respective nations.

There have been some surprising results of the tournament, however. Despite the fact that England and Spain finished 2nd and 3rd respectively, the latest FIFA world rankings have almost not acknowledged that as Denmark, who did not lose once in all six matches, setting a new unbeaten record, have been ranked 2nd behind Argentina. The full top 10 is as follows:

Host nation France failed to break the top 10 after their early defeat in the tournament and are nestled in a relatively disappointing 16th place.

There has been some major managerial changing as well after the tournament. Italy boss Cesare Prandelli announced his resignation from the post, annoucing, "It has been a wonderful many years for me to coach my home nation and be relatively successful. However, I now want to return to club management and experience football day in and day out."

Denmark and Inter Milan manager is the most heavily linked to replace Prandelli, who would likely jump at the chance to coach his home nation. It is expected that should an offer come from the Italian FA, Bergomi would quit his Denmark post after a very successful two years and coach both Inter and Italy.

"Right now, I know nothing about who the next manager will be. I don't want to talk about that. What I do want to talk about is the way the lads [Denmark] have played this tournament and how much pride we've brought the country."

Brendan Rodgers, the England manager, is the complete opposite of Prandelli, reveling in his unexpected success as boss. "Nobody expected us to win this, and that's a fact, but we played brilliantly the whole tournament and thoroughly deserve this cup."

Overall, it was an excellent European Championship here in France these last few months, one that no Englishman especially will soon forget, full of glory and heartbreak. Now we must wait another 2 years before the next major international tournament, the World Cup in 2018! See you then!
Doing well, great to see Denmark ranked second :)
Nice to see that you took Denmark to the top.. Oh wait, you are second :P.. If you ain't first you're last...

jkjkjkjkjk... Great stuff, and I would take the Italy job as well :). I thought that BR sucked in the game (various sacks in various games)
*BUMP*
*shouts* Get to the naughty corner!

Jokes, but what happened to winning the Euros? And only second, sheesh, what are they paying you for. Talk about first placed loser.
Justice: Indeed it is!

Pauker: I am considering the Italy job strongly. Also, BR managed to get Liverpool relegated in his first season with them but has been a hit at England, goodness knows why.

Justice: Woohoo post #950!

edu1878: I'm sorry >.< I tried, I promise!

BERGOMI ANNOUNCED AS ITALY MANAGER

After spending the last two years coaching the Danish national side and bringing them to 2nd in the world, Giuseppe Bergomi has resigned from that post and taken the job as the Italian national team coach, replacing Cesare Prandelli. Bergomi will manage the national side while also managing his club side, Inter Milan.

The fiery ex-Italy international has 81 caps and a World Cup title to his name and is loved by everybody in the nation and is already proving to be a very popular appointment. Bergomi had also enjoyed great success in his first venture into international management, taking small-time Denmark and leading them to the European Championship semifinals and as high as 2nd in the world.

Bergomi takes over Italy in a period of transition. Having now lost long-term boss Cesare Prandelli and still reeling from it's European Championship final loss to England, Italy needs work. Not helping the 5th ranked Italians is the aging contingent of veterans that make up the backbone of the team who will not be able to play at the top level much longer.

"Beppe" as he is affectionately known as, however, was all smiles at his introductory press conference, and gave the rampant media a quote for the ages. "At the club level, I've dominated the world, and now I want to do that on an even bigger stage with Italy. I think I'm the King of Calcio and I plan to prove it these next few years."

We will not have to wait long to see how Bergomi will leave his mark on his nation as Beppe will open his account in a week's time at the Stadio Olimpico as Italy will host South Korea in a friendly match.

Note

HUGE shout out to Walter for the absolutely amazing banner! :D

Note

HUGE shout out to Walter for the absolutely amazing banner! :D

No problem at all, in fact I was honoured to be making a banner for such a quality story with it. A quality update once again and I wish you luck with the Azzuri and hopefully you can conquer the world!

P.S- Did I get the colour right? :P
You've done some good work with Denmark, but Italy is a different challenge. I hope you are up to it ;)
Well, it's about time they gave you the job! FA were probably eating pasta or sleeping all this while.
Guiseppe Bergomi is now truly, the King of Calcio...
Walter: Thanks Walt, the color is nice, the banner is perfect :D

Akash: I'm up for anything ;)

Arvind: "Everybody eats pasta" :))

edu1878: Title references are fun :P

BUSY SUMMER WINDOW FOR INTER

Due to being away in France for over a month for the European Championship and then negotiating terms with the Italian FA for the national job, Giuseppe Bergomi has been in Milan for barely two weeks. In those two weeks, however, Giuseppe Bergomi has managed to sign 3 players, confirm 2 Bosman signings, and sell 5 of his own players.

ARRIVALS

Isco Alcorcon

Fee: Free
Age: 24
CA:
PA:

Once considered one of the brightest young talents in all of Spain, Isco Alcorcon fell into mediocrity when Malaga were relegated and he was unable to secure a move away from the club. Having spent the last three seasons in Liga Adelante, Isco has allowed his contract to expire and has signed for Inter Milan for no fee. Despite good depth in the center of the park for the Nerazzurri, Isco is expected to put a serious claim in for a starting berth.

Fernando Muslera

Fee: Free
Age: 30
CA:
PA:

The Uruguay #1 between the sticks has spent the last 5 years with Galatasary in Turkey, but will be known very well by Inter fans after his 4 previous seasons with capital city side Lazio. For some reason, the Turkish giants had failed to renew Muslera's contract, and Bergomi, looking for a man to provide competition for ter-Stegen, immediately offered him a contract. For now the German international will likely stay first choice, but Muslera will have something to say about that.

Luca Caldirola

Fee: €4,000,000
Age: 25
CA:
PA:

An Inter lad born and bred, Caldirola never truly got his chance at the Nerazzurri. At the age of 21, however, the imposing center back was sent on co-ownership for two seasons to Cesena, and then again for another two seasons. In those four years, Caldirola has proven himself to be one of the best defenders in the league, constantly turning in top performances and leading Cesena to promotion in his first season and 5th place last year. Thus, Bergomi has bought him back for a meager €4M. He will likely fall behind Bellusci and Ranocchia in the pecking order but will be solid backup.

Omar Carrasco

(Regen - No Picture)
Fee: €8,000,000
Age: 18
CA:
PA:

One of the most exciting talents to come out of Chile since Alexis Sanchez and Arturo Vidal, Omar Carrasco is already making waves in football. The attacking fullback burst onto the scene at Colo Colo last year making 24 league appearances and scoring 3 goals. Bergomi had been an admirer of Carrasco for quite some time and now has brought him to the club, likely to split time between the U20's and the main squad. Even though €8M is a lot to spend on such a young player, Inter fans are convinced he will be a star.

Diego Fabbrini

Fee: €18,750,000
Age: 26
CA:
PA:

Diego Fabbrini, fresh off of a brilliant season with Genoa in which he scored 8 goals and created 18 assists in Serie A, was on top of the world when he made his €17.75M move to Manchester City. The disappointment set in, however, when he made a total of 6 appearances. Bergomi, recognizing Fabbrini's talent from his time at Genoa, decided to roll the dice and bring the 3 cap winger back to Italy for €18.75 to compete with Raheem Sterling on the right.

DEPARTURES

Ibrahima Mbaye -> Palermo (€5,500,000)

After making 39 appearances under Bergomi at Inter, Mbaye fell out of favor and spent the last season on co-onwership by Palermo, who paid €2.5M. Having now paid another €5.5M for his other half despite making only 3 appearances last season, Mbaye has officially become a Palermo player for a total of €8M.

Luis Muriel -> Valencia (€6,000,000)

After signing on a free transfer from Udinese, Muriel spent two seasons at Inter and scored 24 goals in 74 appearances, a decent return. He was then loaned to Parma last season where he failed to have a serious impact and has thus been sold to Valencia for €6M and given the No. 10 shirt there.

Andrea Romano -> Palermo (€9,000,000)

Romano had not made a single Serie A appearance for Inter until Bergomi took charge. Since then, he's made 87 league appearances and 127 total, scoring once. However, with the recent introduction of Maher last season and Isco this season as well as the emergence of Lorenzo Crisetig, Romano has lost his place and been sold to Palermo for €9M.

Adryan -> Sao Paolo (€17,500,000)

This sale has come as the most surprising of all, and the most disappointing to many fans of the Nerazzurri. Adryan had made 101 Serie A appearances and 152 in all competitions, scoring 15 goals and creating 28 assists. With many other central midfielders at the club, however, Adryan's €17.5M will help Inter's finances and hopefully will not be missed.

Xherdan Shaqiri -> Manchester United (€20,000,000)

In the biggest sale Inter Milan has made so far this summer, Xherdan Shaqiri has been allowed to leave to Manchester for €20M. He had endured a torrid time at Chelsea and Bayern before coming to Inter, where he at least played more, but underwhelmed often and has been shown the door. Perhaps United can capture his true talents.
