Bendiš walked past his award cabinet. It's really more of a trophy room in the main hall of Poljud. It has all the trophies that Hajduk have ever won, and then features of players' individual awards.
It was, naturally, very impressive.
Bendiš spent time there every once in a while. There was a part of the wall dedicated to Hajduk's run to the final last year, and then, before that, Hajduk's series of campaigns under Bendiš were under a banner labelled "The Bendiš Era". This was a great source of personal pride for him. There was a picture when he joined the club, in the club's jersey at 15, before taking the manager's reigns at 20. He was tall, imposing, but very obviously, very young for the role. He moved on a little bit before he came across two things that he had forgotten. In the corner by the trophy for 2015 was a small blurb and a picture of Ivan Džoni. He had won the young player of the year award then. And again, in 2016. Bottom left corner, the same smiling face.
And then there was his brace against Real Madrid. No one was forgetting that?
He had scored nearly 20 goals in both seasons, before Bendiš looked over him for Ljubi?i?. There was no room in his tactic for three strikers. But Džoni never left, he never wavered. The striker worked hard every day, and was still quite good...
So, when Bendiš left the room, he formed a line-up for the Slaven Belupo match... They were all professionals, so, when Ljubi?i? saw the team list, he wasn't thrilled, but there was an extra spring in Džoni's step... all was not forgotten.
So he walked onto the pitch and gave it everything he had, and it was like turning back the clock. Džoni and Kiš, who grew together with the club, were perfect compliments of each other. It was true, Džoni was not as clinical as Ljubi?i? a striker, but Kiš played so many beautiful passes with Džoni cutting inside, that it wasn't even funny. Džoni scored twice, and then, in the epic display of selflessness that was still well remembered, he assisted once more to the marauding Ton?i Mujan.
And then, he did it again. This time, instead of Kiš being the catalyst, Ton?i Mujan assisted Džoni twice from the wing, before scoring twice on his own. And Hajduk did it again, and although Džoni failed to score, he still played amazingly.
Perhaps Džoni isn't meant for just a bit-part role. The question is, will he play more often now?
