European club competitions are the pinnacle for any manager. For most in the sport, it is the opportunity to prove they are one of the best coaches to grace the game and only true greats can lead a team to European glory. French clubs have not been as successful in Europe as the Spanish, Italian, German or English clubs and I want to change this. There have been an incredible number of managers who have led their clubs to this title – Champions of Europe and I want to be considered amongst that list.
Olympique Lyonnais have never been successful. The furthest we have reached in our long history is the semi finals back in 1963. For a club that has had the domestic success we have, our record in Europe has been less than good and I came in to this job looking to change that.
The last two seasons have seen us disposed by Manchester City and this is a real pain in the backside because the boys I have do not deserve that. The one conclusion that could be drawn from our past efforts in Europe is that we do not have the experience in the squad. With an average age that seems to be getting lower year after year (23.9, 22.9 and now 22.49) the criticism that you can’t win anything with kids could be spread around the media but the difference is we have already won 5 domestic trophies in 2 seasons. I am sure this season will be different for Olympique Lyonnais and I believe the development of these players over the last two seasons is key to our potential success!
European Woe
