Summer Transfers
With Mouhamadou Dabo annoyed with his restricted playing time and Arnold Mvuemba getting older I decided it best to sell them while they were still under contract.
Dabo went for €6 million to Marseille in a deal that I am sure won’t be good business for them and Mvuemba joined Napoli for €8 million.
Michel Bastos also finished his loan spell with Schalke and he was on €90,000. For a 30-year-old that was not in my plans this was outrageous and I decided to put him up for sale. Lokomotiv Moscow came in and bought him for €7 million. I also have to pay Bastos €44,500 until next summer but I would rather that than have him waste away in the reserves for a season.
That gave me a total transfer budget of €56 million. I immediately identified a player I wanted to bring in to play at right back. Davide Santon. He had been transfer listed by Newcastle but he ultimately joined P$G as they offered him €80,000 more on his contract than I was prepared to do. After selling two French players I decided the next one in should be French. Sebastien Corchia was the next one I wanted. He had developed well and would be a first team player if he joined from Sochaux.
He had been transfer listed after I signalled my intentions of buying him in the press and I paid €7.5 million up front, with another €7.5 million to be paid over 48 months.
Kyle Gonzalez joined on a free transfer from Bayern Munich again and will be put on loan to get some first team experience.
Carlos Poveda is another played who has joined on a free from Barcelona B. He will also be sent on loan to get experience and the opportunity to develop.
With the wings needing reinforcements I scouted several players but none seemed to want to really join. I struggled to understand this because we are a growing club with a growing reputation and we have European glory in our sights. Eduardo Salvio was listed by Benfica but at €15 million I didn’t think he was really worth it. One player that had been picked out by my scouts was Younes Belhanda. The Moroccan was Montpellier’s best player by far and would be a great signing, especially after Clement Grenier broke his leg. He can play through the middle and out on the right and I decided to set up a package deal for him. Montpellier accepted a deal with €15.5 million for him and he joins immediately on a 5-year contract worth €48,000 per week.
Three more players joined. Owen Granger from Leeds is a 17-year-old wonderkid and is predicted to become the best left back in the world. He signed for €6 million, on a 3-year contract.
Philippe Lecroix is a right back and at 16 has an amazing future ahead of him. He is a French youngster and joined for €3.1 million from Troyes. Man City and Man Utd both had offers in for this player so I am thrilled to have beaten them to his signing.
The 3rd youngster and final player to join was Macky Bagnack from Barcelona. He had a release clause in his contract for €6,000. Yes that’s right!! Another defender who will be nothing more than back up at Lyon, he shows good defensive skills and will get a few games here and there.
I am extremely happy with the signings and I definitely believe we are building an immense squad for the future. All players here will end up getting first team action, with the majority being first team starters at some point in their careers with me. Corchia and Belhanda have been signed to play straight away while the others will have time to develop and hopefully become first team starters in the next few years.
