Wise Meets the Media
Earlier today a press conference was called at Stamford Bridge to allow Dennis Wise, the new manager of Chelsea Football Club, to meet the media. A great number of journalists turned up to get their questions answered and they didn’t hold back.
Wise was first asked to share his feelings on being given a job on just a one year contract with no assurances of a permanent job come the end of the season. His response was confident with him assuring the journalists that he would be putting in his all into the time that he is given no matter whether his time lasts a week, a month or the whole season. A journalist probed further by suggesting that Chelsea now had the reputation as the club who dismiss managers at the first sign of a bad run of games and asked whether this worried Wise. Wise explained that he would be taking one game at a time and not be worrying about public speculation at any point; he always reminded the gathered media of the statement from the club’s owner about the support he is will receive.
Another member of the gathered media quizzed Wise on his decision to let a large number of backroom staff leave within days of his arrival and whether he had made the correct decision. Wise emphasised the importance of starting a fresh with his own team instead of the previous staff brought in by Rafa Benitez. He went on further and explained that his team had already had several meetings discussing various team matters.
Journalists took the opportunity to ask about recent transfer speculation and Fernando Torres’ future and whether it is at Chelsea or not. Wise was reluctant to discuss the topic in regards to players coming in but did state that Torres was “not for sale”. He was asked several more times to comment on rumours that a deal had already been signed for a record transfer fee but this is something that Wise denied.
Wise was asked if there was any truth in that both Florent Malouda and Yossi Benayoun had moved onto different clubs. This was confirmed by Fabio Paratici, the new Director of Football of who was present, who said that Malouda had been signed by Paris Saint-Germain for £2.5 million and Benayoun had moved onto Napoli for a fee of £2.5 million. Paratici did also confirm that Paulo Ferreira had left for Portugal based Braga for £1 million.
The press conference was brought to a close by Wise who suggested that he had pressing business with pre-season just round the corner.
