The European Super Cup is seen as a chance for two clubs to show why they are the top team in Europe. The competition puts the winner of the Champions League and Europa League against each other. This season saw Chelsea, the winners of the Champions League, go up against Atletico Madrid the winners of the Europa League.
There had not been much hype surrounding the game with Chelsea being seen as firm favourites and expected to comfortably win the game. However, some pundits are a bit more sceptical and expect Chelsea to find the game more difficult than they think with Radamel Falcao expected to steal the show. Falcao has been reportedly seeking a move to a different club and this match provides him with the opportunity to show his true potential.
Chelsea on the other hand has had a very positive pre-season and a good start to their league campaign. The team are expected to come into this game and dominate from start to finish and score goals galore as they did in pre-season. It will be Dennis Wise’s first experience of European football as a manager and it is going to be interesting to see if he goes about this type of match differently.

Unfortunately for the relatively small crowd of 18,521 the match did not live up to expectations with neither side looking like they wanted to score. Chelsea matched expectations in terms of dominating possession and the control of the ball in the middle of the pitch. This control did result in a number of chances being created but they seemed to find it difficult to get the shots on target. It was Robert Lewandowski’s first experience in European football with Chelsea which did result in him scoring the only goal of the game in the first half.
The match will not go down in the history of amazing European finals but it is the second piece of silverware heading to the Chelsea cabinet which will please the Chelsea fans.
