Friendlies
During pre-season we didn't play many friendlies, only two. I felt training was more important than actual friendlies, therefore we spent more time on the training pitch, although we did play a few behind the door friendlies, due to them being behind the door I cannot identify the teams we played.
I've enjoyed my time so far at Arsenal managing the ladies. They're all very good professionals and very friendly too. From time to time you can have a bit of banter with them but we all make sure we get back to business and regain focus ahead of the new season.
With the two friendlies we played (excluding the behind door friendlies), we won one and lost one. However the results is not what I really cared about it was the performance from the ladies, who impressed, who will be sent on loan. Possibly who to bring in and then the tactics a very important element to a teams success.
Now in terms of the tactic that will be used this season, I, alongside with the coaching staff, have decided to go with a simple 4-2-3-1. This is not the same formation the first team plays. Wenger tends to play a 4-3-3 with two holding midfielders and one attacking, then one centre forward accompanied with two wingers. The 4-2-3-1 is very similar to this and looks a bit like this:
In terms of team instructions, instead of the zonal marking our first team uses, we have opted to use man marking. We want to play possession football but still attack. We're aiming for the ladies too press more and win the ball in the midfield or even pressuring the opposition defenders to make mistakes.
Our defensive line will not be too high, as we don't want to be caught out on the counter or by any long ball that goes over the heads of the defence. We're very good aerially and our full backs and wingers are very talented. Therefore we will play not only through the middle but on the wings too.
The tempo must be quick. We want sharp, one-two football. The opposition should get tired of chasing the ball around due to how quickly it is moving between our players. Eventually we must look for the killer pass that will create a goal scoring opportunity.
We kick off the our domestic campaign with a fixture vs Lincoln Ladies in the FA WSL Continental Cup. After that game we play Lincoln again but in the league. Here is our Continental Cup group.
The ladies are raring to go, and so am I. Come on Arsenal!
