Botafogo Triumph In Biggest Derby In Years

Botafogo reigned supreme in the Alvinegro derby, dealing out a 4-2 smashing over bitter city rivals and Rio de Janeiro titans Vasco da Gama, in a match being described as one of the best ever in the history of the Rio State Championship.

Estrela Solitaria fans were jubilant at the final whistle, in what was being billed as one of the matches of the season. Vasco had made the better start to the season but Botafogo's raw skill and tactical nous was enough to get them over the line in a tough battle.

The scoreboard may reflect a close hard fought game but the truth was that it was all Botafogo. They topped Vasco on the stats sheet, with 25 shots to 6 and 56% possession. Vasco fans cannot hide from the fact that they were completely overrun in the derby.

Player-manager Clarence Seedorf, 37, opened the scoring to light up the Botafogo section of the Maracanã after tapping in a cross from the left. But only five minutes later key player Edmilson equalised with a powerful effort for Vasco.

And the tide looked to have completely turned in favour of Vasco, as Dankler powered home a bullet of a shot into the roof of the net. This was sure a test of Botafogo's resilience, and they complied.

Only eight minutes later Seedorf scored what may prove to be one of the goals of the season as he curled an effort into the near post from what seemed too far out to score from. And Botafogo completed a four minute double salvo to hit the lead once more after Renato scored a glancing header past the helpless Michel Alves.

No side could not break each other down fully, although every time Botafogo surged forward it looked like another goal. Seedorf hit the post a remarkable three times while Lucas, Cidinho and Renato all had efforts turned away.

But it was the Uruguayan Lodeiro who completed the rout, as he slotted home a shot from a tight angle to seal an emphatic victory.

Social Network Reaction

Here is the reaction from Botafogo fans across social networks in the aftermath of the game.

Calisto Soares

What a win! As a loyal Fogo fan, this is one the highlights of the season already! Vai Estrela Solitaria!

Paulo Antunes

There is only one team in Rio! That is Botafogo, what a win today against a team like Vasco!:D We can retain our title this season, no doubt!

Walter Lemos

A thorough domination of a team like Vasco is something every Botafogo fan should be supremely proud about. Bring on Fluminense!

Great victory, and great performance by Seedorf. It's always nice to see a player defy his age in any sport.

Seedorf's Diary: February 2014

The second month of the season we were put up against four different teams. These teams were Macaé, who ply their trade in Serie C. Bangu, who we played against earlier in pre-season. After that we were pitting out wits against city neighbours and big rivals Vasco da Gama, before finishing off February with a short trip to Volta Redonda.

How did we go? Let's find out.

Botafogo 2-0 Macaé

2.2.2014 | Rio State | Engenhão | Rio de Janeiro | Silvério, M | 8,061

Hyuri 20'
R. Marques 85'

Gabriel Araújo (Macaé)

Thoughts: I rested a few players for this game, mainly to give some youngsters and fringe players a chance to stretch their legs. We never really got into first gear in this match but we got the win regardless, so that means three more points for us.

Bangu 0-1 Botafogo

9.2.2014 | Rio State | Moça Bonita | Rio de Janeiro | de Souza, P | 9.027

Paulo Vitor 4'
Almir 64'
N. Lodeiro 69'
Bolivar 90+1'

N. Lodeiro (Botafogo)

Thoughts: It was a sweltering hot day, and it really took it's toll. I also think as well as the hot summer heat we lacked drive and motivation and our lineup was a bit broken. I switched Lodeiro to the right and Cidinho to the left and that set up our winner, as the Uruguayan broke through from the right to smash a powerful effort home for the win.

Botafogo 4-2 Vasco da Gama

16.2.2014 | Rio State | Maracanã | Rio de Janeiro | Azevedo, Í | 29.274

C. Seedorf 9' 31'
Edmílson 14'
Dankler 23'
Renato 35'
N. Lodeiro 65'
M. Mattos 22'
Juninho 59'
Sandro Silva 64'

C. Seedorf (Botafogo)

Thoughts: By far the standout match of the month. Our team played excellently. We started excellently and then fought back excellently. The score sheet doesn't reflect our true domination of our city neighbours. We had twenty five shots to their measly six, and it paid off.

Volta Redonda 0-2 Botafogo

23.2.2014 | Rio State | R de Oliveira | Volta Redonda [RJ] | de Souza, P | 8,898

Zé Augusto 14'
N. Lodeiro 10'
Gegê 14'

Stanley (Volta Redonda)

Thoughts: A good way to finish off the month. Yet again Lodeiro proved what a special player he is for the club, several times he beat a number of players to create chances. I like his positive play on the wings and that is what is winning us games at the moment.

Player of the Month

http://celebrityhairstylez.com/wp-content/gallery/nicolas-lodeiro/nicolas-lodeiro-hairstyles10.jpg
Nicolas Lodeiro

The diminutive winger showed just how dangerous he was. Swapped from the left to the right midway through the month and showed how he can cut in and create and score chances. His dribbling is second to none and he may just well cement his place as the second Uruguayan after Loco Abreu to become a fan favourite.

Around The State

Goals, goals.. and more goals. Friburguense were involved in a lot of goals - just at the wrong end. They suffered humiliating defeats to Vasco da Gama and Fluminense 9-0 and 10-0. This just showed the difference in class between the smaller and bigger fish in the state.

League Table

Position: 2nd

The win against Vasco helped our cause and we leapfrogged them into second. Yet again, our biggest enemies Fluminense are in first. They now have a huge goal different of +40 after big wins every week. The only way we can beat them is on points now, which is a big ask itself.
What a great set of results, and Lodeiro scoring in 3 straight games is straight class!
1
Great Results. Good to see the manager scoring, even though that is kinda weird. Lodeiro with his boot phone?
1
Look at Flumi go! +40 Goal difference!
