Derby Della Madonnina

The Derby Della Madonnina, or the Milan Derby, is a professional football match between the two largest clubs in the Italian city of Milan. The clash between Inter Milan and A.C. Milan is considered to be one the biggest fixtures in Italian football if not the world. The Derby occurs at least twice a year, due to league fixtures, but the clubs have also met in other competitions such as the Champions League, Coppa Italia and Supercoppa Italiana. It is unique in the fact that it is one of the only crosstown derbies in the world that always takes place at the same stadium, as both Milan and Inter call San Siro 'home'. It is known as the Derby Della Madonnina in honour of one of the main attractions in Milan, the statue of the Virgin Mary which is referred to as 'Madonnina'.

Recently both sides have fallen below their own high standards, with Inter Milan currently playing in the Europa League and A.C. Milan not featuring in Europe for the first time since 1999. Both clubs now have new managers looking to take their respective clubs back to glory. A.C. Milan announced the appointment of Filippo Inzaghi in June, with the former A.C. Milan striker making 202 appearances for Milan from 2001-2012. Inter Milan signed Walter Mazzarri as their manager last year, and despite their decent qualification for the Europa League, Inter fans expect more and pressure is on Mazzarri to deliver.

In the 1980s and 1990s, Inter Milan and AC Milan were both at the pinnacle of world football. Both clubs boast a strong heritage and are still two of the biggest clubs in Italy. But recently, the likes of Juventus, Roma and Napoli have challenged and even replaced the two Milan clubs as the powerhouses of Italian football. Inzaghi and Mazzarri will be attempting to change the current trend and will be pushing to make their clubs great once again.
