Borussia Dortmund confirms signings of Florian Thauvin and Alphonse Areola

Brian Laudrup has moved very quickly in the summer market and has already signed his first two players, both young Frenchmen and ready to break into the first team.

Brian Laudrup and his staff seemed determined to improve on last season's performance as his Borussia Dortmund side have already brought in two new signings. First coming in the French duo is goalkeeper Alphonse Areola (left) for €2M from Paris St.-Germain, followed closely by left winger Florian Thauvin (right) in a €15M from Olympique de Marseille.

With Roman Weidenfeller now 34 years of age, it is time for der BVB to finally start looking for long-term replacements for the fourteen-year Dortmund veteran. With Australian Mitch Langerak nowhere near good enough to take up the mantle, it seems the 22 year old Alphonse Areola is the chosen successor.

The shot-stopper spent the last season on loan at mid-table Ligue 1 side SC Bastia, where he played in 30 matches and kept 7 clean sheets. Areola showed his quick reflexes and one-on-one prowess on multiple occasions, including keeping clean sheets against Marseille, Lyon, and LOSC Lille. He has now signed a €15k per week contract through 2019 at Signal Iduna Park and will likely play backup to Weidenfeller for this season before stepping into the number one role.

The second man to make the trek from France into Germany is Florian Thauvin. Just 22 years old, Thauvin has already been making splashes in Ligue 1 with his scintillating performances for Olympique de Marseille. Despite only scoring 3 goals and assisting 5 in last season's competition, Thauvin was always a threat on the left side with his direct dribbling abilities.

Having signed a €31,500 per week contract through 2019, many people are wondering how much of an impact the new man will actually have. Behind superstar Marco Reus in the pecking order, the young starlet will have to make quite an impression to win some starts. Some pundits are speculating, however, that Marco Reus could make the move into the center of the park, or even play as a striker after relatively disappointing seasons from both Pierre-Emerick Aubameyang and Ciro Immobile.

"I'm delighted to have gotten these players in so quickly," Laudrup told the press at the dual-unveiling. "I promise you all one thing, though...we are not done here. More faces are coming in, and some are heading out. To create a world-class team, we need to make some changes, and those changes are happening now."

Thauvin is a good signing. Idk much about Areola but I'm fairly certain he'll be better than Langerak lolz.
Thauvin's a great young talent and a superb signing, but surely he never would have been brought in if Marco Reus was staying! ;)
Hmm, interesting signing. Do you think that Areola can be called upon and maybe even replace Weidenfeller? I would've gone with the wealth of options you have in German keepers to make it a HG team ;)
Very interesting signings. I´m sure they´ll do good for you!
Walter: Just about anything is a step up from Langerak! In all honesty, Areola is a pretty good talent, I hope he develops well for me! :D

JasonRM: Or maybe it's simply because Marco Reus has an injury tendency, as highlighted in real life this year, and I like to have depth in every position? Or, maybe, Reus might play more centrally this year? Who knows ;)

Pauker: I think Areola is definitely the heir to Weidenfeller's spot between the sticks. There are a good number of German options, but they are all far more expensive; €2M for the Frenchman is a bargain :P

Jonte-23: Thanks pal, me too! :)

Thanks so much everyone for helping me reach 500 replies! Here's to 500 more and breaking 1,000! :D
Don't diss Langerak, he's our next Brad Jones!

And well done on cramming 500 f**king replies into a single season, god help us all :P
If he can be compared to Brad Jones, he's not good ;)
Feliks: "The next Brad Jones" :)) To be fair, I think it was closer to 490; these last two updates have technically been a part of season two.

Justice: Hey, Brad Jones is a legend, okay :P
awesome updates and way to go on 500 replies
No1VillaFan: Thanks pal, means a lot! Hopefully I can keep this up for months to come :)

Transfer news: Atletico Madrid complete shock €22.5M deal for Thiago Alcantara

Thiago has chosen to return to Spain, ending an ill-fated two years at Bayern Munich.

Atletico de Madrid have made a massive surprise signing by bringing the once heavily-touted Barcelona youth product Thiago Alcantara back to La Liga BBVA on a five year contract.

Thiago Alcantara was considered "the perfect mix between Xavi and Iniesta" by Pep Guardiola, another brilliant La Masia product set to be the heir to FC Barcelona's royal midfield. As Guardiola left for Germany, however, he decided to bring his protege with him to Bayern Munich.

Behind the likes of Javi Martinez, Bastian Schweinsteiger, Toni Kroos, and Xabi Alonso and being out with knee and ankle injuries for a total of over ten months, Thiago managed only 30 Bundesliga appearances in the last two years, scoring just twice and generally failing to make any sort of serious impact.

Michael Laudrup clearly still sees the quality and potential in the now 24 year old Spanish international and has agreed a €22.5M transfer for the footballer, with incentives potentially increasing the fee to €30M. Thiago has signed a massive €225k per week contract through 2020, and will now hope to finally live up to the hype that surrounded him as a youngster.

"I'm ecstatic to welcome Thiago to the club," Laudrup told the press at the player's unveiling. "With him, Koke, and Gabi, I believe our central midfield has reached a truly elite, world-class level that can play with absolutely anybody on the planet."

Thiago is expected to play a relatively new role for him, in behind the lone striker with Koke and Gabi behind him. Given the number 8 shirt, kit sales have already gone through the roof as the fans' mouths water at the anticipation of the Spanish midfield trio dominating Europe.

"I'm here to win," Thiago told the reporters. "I've struggled in the past with injuries and form, but all of that is behind me now. I'm here in Madrid to play my best football and help Atletico rise to become champions, year after year."

Koke - Samper(?) - Thiago in the near future :P?
The future of Spain's midfield is now yours, I've no doubts Thiago and Koke will be Atletico's Xavi and Iniesta.
My all-time favorite story along with Aaron's, well done.
Pauker: Now that would be the future of Spain's midfield!! Might happen one day ;)

Oz-96: Thanks so much pal, great to know you're enjoying it a lot :)
