Ciro Immobile struggled in his first season in Germany and is now headed back to Italy, with Inter's attacking phenom Mauro Icardi headed the other way.
In undoubtedly the biggest transfer of the Serie A and Bundesliga so far, Borussia Dortmund and Internazionale have agreed an unprecedented swap deal between their two first-choice strikers; Ciro Immobile, after a difficult period in Dortmund, will return to Serie A, while Mauro Icardi, 2014's European Golden Boy, heads over to der BVB. Sweetening the deal for the Italian side is no less than €35M.
IMMOBILE: FLOP? — Two years ago, Ciro Immobile broke onto the scene in Italy by leading the league with 22 goals for Torino, earning him a €20M move to Borussia Dortmund. Things haven't been quite as rosy in Germany, however. In 27 appearances in the Bundesliga, Immobile scored just 7 goals, and often fell behind Pierre-Emerick Aubameyang as first-choice striker. He will hope this move back to his homeland will aid his return to form.
THE GOLDEN BOY — Mauro Icardi, much unlike Ciro Immobile, is coming off the best season of his career. He scored 28 goals in 40 appearances in all competitions last term and won many accolades, despite being just 22 years of age. Many pundits are calling Icardi the next great Argentinian striker, to follow in the footsteps of the likes of Carlos Tevez and Sergio Aguero.
WEIGHT OF EXPECTATION — Not too many fans are expecting huge sparks from Immobile at Inter, but just about everyone in Germany is anticipating seeing this new, expensive attacking star in the form of Icardi. The weight of expectation could be crippling; one need only look at the likes of Fernando Torres and Andy Carroll to show that big fees can often be too much for a player to handle. However, if Icardi can deal with the pressure and thrive under it, he could become the Bundesliga's new young star.
