Colchester Promoted To League One

Colchester United have gained promotion to League One this afternoon after a 4-2 win against Plymouth Argyle.

Colchester have been promoted alongside Accrington Stanley at the first time of asking this afternoon. It wasn't expected that promotion would be achieved today, however with Wycombe Wanderers and Mansfield both dropping points alongside the win over Plymouth it meant that both sides were promoted.

Bradley Fewster gave Colchester the lead after 39 minutes and would double their lead shortly after the break. Midfielder Graham Carey pulled one back for Argyle, who are still chasing the automatic promotion places but after the loss now sit in 5th. Malik Wilks then equalised for the visitors, however a minute later Tommie O'Sullivan restored the lead for the U's before Fewster completed his hat-trick to confirm the win and the promotion celebrations would soon follow.

Accrington beat Newport County 2-0 at Rodney Parade which allowed them to remain top of the table, after they took advantage of some poor results at the start of the month from their rivals. With three games left to play, they sit level on points with games to Luton Town and Stevenage to conclude their league season.

Colchester boss Paddy McLaughlin said after the game, "It's brilliant to finally confirm promotion back into League One as it's been coming the last few months. The effort shown from all the boys in the dressing room has been fantastic and they have really deserved this, it's because of them that the points come. But obviously this couldn't have been done without the fans who turn up week in, week out and give their hard earned money to come and watch us play, home or away so this promotion is something I want to give to them."

"I don't want to have to settle for second place, the next aim is to reclaim top spot and ensure that the title is won and we can bring it back to Colchester and then we can prepare for League One knowing we are the rightful champions, bringing a confidence boost for us all with it."

Leyton Orient and Yeovil Town are the two remaining games for Colchester this season. Yeovil can be relegated next weekend, whereas Orient are now mathimatically safe following their 1-1 draw to Crewe and Barnet's, who now occupy 23rd place, 3-0 loss to Hartlepool.
Credit to Jack for the amazing graphic. :)

Great news on the promotion! Now to continue your legacy at Colchester, and fight for the next one!
MJK- Thanks mate and I agree, it's lovely isn't it.

Jack- It's been a crazy year hasn't it. Thanks for your work mate, again. ;)

Justice- Looking forward to next season now, although the title is still to be won. :P

League Two Table

A good twenty goal victory in your final game should secure the title. Good progress.
The Notts result must have stung
Justice- I have a feeling that can be done. ;)

MJK- It was, considering I also went down to ten men because of injury (I had already made my subs) it cost us the game... gutting.

The Final Day

http://e1.365dm.com/15/01/16-9/20/l3aDd5cjrtGIvJN9cAEXf-D8t7jaxWC9.jpg

JS: Welcome to Soccer Saturday and the final day of the League 2 season. I am joined by the one and only Chris Kamara, Hayes & Yeading fan Corey, Eastleigh manager Liam Knowles and Paris FC manager Kevin Gauthier. They will provide all the drama on what will surely be a tense day for some. The battle at the top, Accrington and Colchester are fighting for the title, Mansfield and Wycombe are both going for the final automatic promotion spot and Barnet and Morecambe will be trying to avoid suffering the same fate as Yeovil Town this afternoon. The games are underway so let's head off to Broadhall Way and join Chris Kamara, Chris.

CK: Yes Jeff, it's going to be a tight afternoon here between these two sides – Accrington and Stevenage as the home side know that the league is in their hands. Only a few minutes in but it seems that Stanley aren't going to be playing safe and are going for the early goal so far.

JS: Thanks Chris. They are competing for the title with Colchester this afternoon... so let's head off to The Weston Homes Community Stadium shall we. Liam?

LK: Just like Chris said, it's going to be a tough afternoon here as well. Yeovil are under a resurgeance of late, one of the form sides in the league currently and they won't make it easy for Paddy McLaughlin's side. Not much has happened here either so far, but I'm sure that will change over the course of the game.

KG: GOAL!

JS: And we have a goal at Blundell Park... but who for Kevin?

KG: It's for the visitors Plymouth, attacking down the middle, Graham Carey picks it up and runs at the defence, spots a great run from Oscar Threlkeld who slots home. One-nil Plymouth!

JS: Plymouth already have that playoff place confirmed, but with this result it is shuffling around who will play who! Let's head off to-

KG: GOAL!

JS: There's been a second goal in the game at Blundell Park and we're only FIVE MINUTES IN! Kevin!

KG: Plymouth are two up and it's Jake Jervis with the goal. A fantastic effort from outside the box beats McKeown and the lead is extended, it's all Argyle here and the scoreline could very much be more at the current rate.

JS: Not good at all for Grimsby fans... but there has been a red card in the game between Crawley and promotion chasing Mansfield... who for Corey?

C: Crawley are down to ten men Jeff, it's Alex O'Hanlon who has been red carded for a poor last man challenge on Matt Green. I'm not sure what he's thinking here, but it's a clumsy challenge and no doubt a red card.

JS: Mansfield are the side in that penultimate spot – they just need to better Wycombe's scoreline this afternoon and that's where we'll head now and join Bianca Westwood.

BW: Wycombe know what they have to do today and are certainly going for it here against a poor Cambridge United side. Luke O'Nien came close with a shot from outside the area but it was well held by Luke Norris in the Cambridge goal and a header from a well worked corner routine was also headed off the line, but the scoreline remains at deadlock.

JS: Hartlepool lead against Doncaster... Louis Rooney has put us ahead in that one. A good run of form from 'Pool as of late, won four of their last five games.

CK: GOAL!

JS: There's only one word for what has happened at Broadhall Way Kammy!

CK: UNBELIEVABLE JEFF! Stevenage are upsetting Stanley here and are in front! Josh McQuoid has just scored a peach of a goal, curling the ball into the top corner from about 25-30 yards out. Stevenage 1 Accrington 0.

JS: Unbelievable is the word Kammy and this means that Colchester are TOP of League Two as it stands. Has the news broken through yet, Liam?

LK: It certainly has Jeff, the fans are bouncing here and the energy is coming onto the pitch as a shot just goes over from Tarique Fosu. It has been a close game so far, Colchester just about edging it but no side looks like scoring at the moment if I'm honest.

JS: Brilliant news for Colchester... there's been a few quickfire goals in the division. Luton lead 1-0 against Morecambe, as they seek to avoid safety... Danny Hylton with the goal. Elsewhere Cheltenham are in front against Portsmouth, Dan Holman continues his goalscoring run. There's also been a goal at Adams Park... but who for Bianca?

BW: No surprise Jeff, Wycombe have taken the lead and it's been deserved. O'Nien came close earlier but has scored this time, a close range effort tucked away well.

KG: GOAL!

JS: Things looked bleak for Grimsby... not anymore.

KG: Not at all Jeff, it's 2-1 and Grimsby are back in the game. Asante has scored after a quick one-two with Disley and his run was timed to perfection, one on one, there was only one outcome. 2-1

JS: His 12th of the season after his move from Solihull Moors... Carlisle are in front against Exeter, Aaron Wilbraham has scored for the Cumbrians.

KG: GOAL, SCENES!

JS: AND RIGHT ON THE STROKE OF HALF TIME... GRIMSBY ARE LEVEL!

KG: They are and Reece Grego-Cox is the man to provide the goal. A FANTASTIC effort from the young man, perhaps one of the goals of the season as he hits it on the volley from about 35 yards out, crashing past the keeper, off the bottom of the upright and in. TWO-TWO!

JS: A superb strike from Grego-Cox there.. Exeter have equalised through Reuben Reid against Carlisle as the half-time whistles sound around the league. The key scores are that Accrington are behind and Colchester are still level meaning they go top. Mansfield are still level meaning they hold onto third despite Wycombe being in front and Barnet are still level also meaning they are joining Yeovil, currently.

-Half time run through of all the scores and a short break inbetween ready for the second half-

JS: Welcome back, there's already been a goal in the game between Portsmouth and Cheltenham as Dan Holman doubles his tally for the afternoon there. Carlisle have also regained the lead against Exeter, Wilbraham also getting a second of the day. Let's head off to Colchester first, anything happening Liam?

LK: Colchester came close just then as Bradley Fewster skipped through but his effort was turned round the post by Artur Krysiak. Beside that there hasn't been too much action like I said in the first half, sadly. Still 0-0.

JS: What about Accrington, Chris?

CK: It's been all Stevenage and Accrington are lucky to still be within a chance of this game. McQuoid has been providing issues all day for the defence and has seen a range of shots saved by the keeper. Something needs to be done for Stanley, as I say that Shay McCartan is warming up so it seems like he'll be joining Kee up front.

JS: Barnet's relegation is looking ever clearer as Morecambe have equalised against Luton, Aaron Wildig with the goal to potentially secure the club's future in this division. Danny Philskirk has made it 1-0 Blackpool against Leyton Orient and as I say that a second has just gone in... Jordan Flores doubling the lead.

KG: GOAL!

JS: A goal at Blundell Park, surely not?

KG: It has happened! Grimsby have completely turned this game on it's head and it's Asante again! The ball is crossed in from Danny Collins, Asante manages to get in front of Songo'o and nods home calmly. 3-2 Grimsby!

JS: They looked out of the game but a brilliant fightback from Marcus Bignot's men there.. Red cards GALORE at the moment! Notts County are down to ten as Haydn Hollis has been sent off, but in the same game Sid Nelson has for Newport. Cheltenham are down to ten men too, Harry Pell for the visitors and Mansfield are also now on a level playing field again against Crawley, but why Corey?

C: I have to disagree with the referee on this one, shocking decision. Whiteman wraps his foot around the ball, clearly wins it and the Crawley player goes to ground clearly trying to get something from it and has fooled the referee completely. Poor.

JS: You see it all too much in football these days don't you. Not long left here for Accrington to snatch an important goal Kammy..

CK: Not at all and as you come to me Stevenage are attacking down the left hand side BALL IN! CHARLIE LEE HAS SCORED FOR STEVENAGE AND IT'S 2-0 TO THE HOME SIDE. THE TRAVELLING STANLEY FANS ARE GUTTED! UNBELIVABLE!

JS: It certainly is and Accrington are losing out on the title on the last day it seems! Goal at Adams Park, Bianca.

BW: It's 2-0 Wycombe now, Dominic Gape has scored from inside the six yard box but this result means nothing as you know due to the scoreline at Mansfield, the fans know it and are eagerily looking at their phones. But it's 2-0 here.

JS: Goal at Portsmouth as Will Boyle has put from his own net-

LK: CHANCE.... GOAL!

JS: THERE HAS BEEN A GOAL AT COLCHESTER THAT CAN HAVE A HUGE IMPACT ON THE TITLE, BUT WHO FOR?!

LK: Goal for Colchester! Three minutes to go here and Tommy O'Sullivan has surely wrapped up the title now for Colchester, his shot has bobbled off the foot of a Yeovil defender and in but he won't care, the fans won't care... the manager jumped about 10 feet into the area in celebration, Colchester are surely champions.

JS: The title is heading to Colchester it seems as more goals are going in very late on here. Cogley has scored for Luton but with the current result at Barnet, Morecambe will still be safe. Hartlepool have also scored and it's Sterling with the goal to ensure three points are secured on the last day. The full time whistle has sounded at The Hive and Barnet have been relegated alongside Yeovil to the National League this afternoon after a 0-0 draw to Crewe. Morecambe can celebrate, they have survived. Mansfield have secured that final automatic place, well done to Steve Evans and everyone associated with the club... they are League One bound AND THE TITLE CELEBRATIONS HAVE BEGUN AT COLCHESTER AS THE FULL TIME WHISTLE HAVE GONE AT BOTH GAMES THEY ARE LEAGUE TWO CHAMPIONS THIS AFTERNOON. BRILLIANT STUFF FOR PADDY MCLAUGHLIN AND ALL THE COLCHESTER FANS! Accrington will settle for second spot. With that let's give you a classified check of the scores.

-Guy with dreary voice goes through all the scores from the afternoon and the show closes with the table.-
OMG dude that was a great write up and was very dramatic!! Congrats on the title as well
Great update mate. Congrats on going up
MJK & Redvee- Cheers lads :)

Lisbie: "Promotion Surprised Me."

http://i.dailymail.co.uk/i/pix/2013/11/19/article-2509583-0295ECAD000004B0-429_634x464.jpg

Club favourite Kevin Lisbie has said that the U's promotion "surprised" him after they won the league following the 1-0 win against Yeovil Town on Saturday.

In a sitdown interview with the former Colchester frontman, who scored 30 goals in 82 games over two different spells at the club and now plays for National South side Whitehawk said, "It's a wonderful achievement for the club and all associated with it. They have come across some challenging years recently so to see a positive note is something I welcome. However it has surprised me, promotion was certainly not the aim I feel for the season."

The 38 year old added, "To win the league on the last day is something the fans will savour I'm sure, as a footballer I feel like everyone dreams of winning a league title, regardless of the division you play in, a trophy is still a trophy at the end of the day. The new management at the club has definitely made an impact and has shaken things up well, clearing the deadwood needed from a disappointing previous season, beating targets in the process this season."

However Lisbie is unsure of how the club will fare in their return to League One, "I feel like changes will be made and lessons will be learnt from the board after the way things went last time. A few players, in my eyes, aren't ready for the step up and will most likely be moved on and improvements will have to be made – especially in the defensive area as a fair few goals were shipped. The future looks bright, there are some talented young players at the managers disposal who featured a few bit this season so hopefully that can continue."

Another former Colchester man commented on promotion via Twitter, Lomana LuaLua made 61 appearances for the club between 1998 and 2000 before leaving to Premier League side Newcastle United. He wrote, "Congratulations to everyone at @CUFC_Official and best wishes in your return to League One #Champions.

The playoffs are still to be decided in the division as Luton Town face Plymouth Argyle and Wycombe Wanderers will face Portsmouth to determine who will join the U's, Accrington Stanley and Mansfield Town in League One next season.
