U's manager Paddy McLaughlin has today announced his players' retained and released list for the upcoming 2017/18 season.

A short statement from the manager reads, "Following our promotion to League One, decisions had to be made as to who can make the step up and who, sadly, won't. Each player was told their future in a face-to-face in relation to their contracts and we had a long dicussion about the matter. I have met with the chairman several times over the past few weeks and days to continue our plan ahead of the season, to ensure the club is continuing in the right direction."

Retained:
Doug Loft
Luke Prosser
Sean Murray
Sam Walker
Tommy O'Sullivan
Kurtis Guthrie
Frankie Kent
Thomas Lapsile
Sammie Szmodics
Craig Slater
Brennan Dickenson
Dean Brill

Offered New Contracts:
Chris Porter
Tom Eastman
Drey Wright
Courtney Senior

Released With Immediate Effect:
Jermaine Grandison
Lloyd Doyley
Owen Garvan
Richard Brindley
George Elokobi

We would like to wish Jermaine, Lloyd, Owen, Richard and George the best of luck in finding their next club for the season and would like to thank them for their work over the 2016/17 campaign.
Will we be expecting a major player overhaul then, to increase squad numbers? :P
You should have given Big George one more chance
Justice- A fair bit of business was conducted, aye. :P

MJK- He was useless though. :P

Arsenal Duo Join U's on loan

Newly promoted side Colchester United have completed the loan signings of Arsenal pair Vlad Dragomir and Eddie Nketiah this afternoon.

Dragomir and Nketiah, both 18, have yet to kick a ball for the Arsenal first team side yet as they both continue their growth in the youth ranks at the Premier League side. Dragomir joined Arsenal from his native Romania, signing from Poli Timosoara in 2015 for a fee of around £75,000 whereas Nketiah was brought through the Arsenal youth academy in the same year.

The Romanian, yet to have a cap at under 18 level still, has been described as an 'accomplished' midfielder who possesses a 'great creative mind on the ball' by youth coach Kwame Ampadu, who also commented on Nketiah as a 'quick intelligent striker' who is 'comfortable in front of goal.'

Colchester boss Paddy McLaughlin said this when confirming the signings, "The two young lads have great potential and I am looking forward to what they can show on the pitch. I've received some very positive words from my scouting team, who have worked hard on uncovering some of the talent available to us on loan and believe they can help us continue moving forward as a club."

He continued, "We need further depth in all areas this season as we had a fairly narrow squad anyway and due to the releases we have made, it causes more business to have to be made in order for us to field a strong team throughout the season. There are more to come and I will be working hard to make sure that only the best available to us come out of the tunnel at the start of the season."

It is believed that there is also a player leaving the club in the coming days. Out-of-favour striker Denny Johnstone looks set to join League Two side Lincoln as a bid of £47,000 was accepted from the U's. The Scotsman only made two appearances last campaign following a move from Birmingham after a successful loan spell at Scottish Championship club Greenock Morton.

Two very good loan signings to bring in, they'll add a lot of quality and energy to your side!
Great to see this story still going strong man and congratulations on the SOTM! Dragomir should be a great piece of business too! :D
Justice- I hope they do, they both look very talented and good additions to the squad.

Griffin- Cheers mate! I hope so.

Wilson Joins Colchester

http://www.bwfc.co.uk/cms_images/common/lawrie-4x3201-3213947_613x460.jpg

Lawrie Wilson has joined League One side Colchester United on a free transfer following his release from Bolton Wanderers this summer.

The English full-back made just three appearances last season for Wanderers who failed to regain their Championship status, losing out in the playoff semi-finals to Sheffield United. He was granted a release at the end of the season and has since rejoined United, who once previously signed for in 2006, but did not make a single appearance and went on to have a loan spell with Welling before leaving to Stevenage.

An experienced player in and around this division, playing 41 times in Stevenage's campaign in this division in 2011 but also more recently featuring for Charlton more so and Bolton in the Championship, Wilson will be the replacement of Richard Brindley who was released this summer, suring up a position which perhaps currently lacks of lot of depth.

Wilson, 29 said in a statement, "I am delighted to be able to rejoin Colchester United this afternoon in what looks to be a promising season for the club upon return to League One. I thoroughly enjoyed my short spell at Bolton, despite all the hardships of relegation and not featuring too much over the last year – the club have been a huge help to my career."

"The opportunity to join an up and coming club such as Colchester, one that seems to have a lot of goals and the ability to back it up is something I could not simply pass on. It was demonstrated last season just how talented everyone involved in the club is when they won the title and I am very much looking forward to my time in Essex."

Furthermore, Denny Johnstone has also left the club for Lincoln City as previously mentioned for a fee of £47,500. The Imps returned to League Two for the first time since relegation from the division in 2011 by winning the National League playoff final last season, beating Eastleigh on penalties.

I hope he produces for you
MJK- Me too, he looks a very solid option.

Digby Joins On Free

http://www.greenun24.co.uk/polopoly_fs/1.4594799.1467105112!/image/image.jpg_gen/derivatives/landscape_630/image.jpg

Paul Digby is the latest player to join League One side Colchester United following his release from Ipswich.

Confirmed via the clubs website, Digby has joined after a failed spell at Championship club Ipswich. Joining from Barnsley last season after a successful loan spell with the club the previous season, first team chances were limited for the Englishman as he failed to make a single start for the Tractorboys in the league, making three in cup competitions.

A versatile player, capable of playing in the center of defence but also in midfield, Digby adds to the options of Luke Prosser and Tom Eastman at the back with 'more additions to come,' as Colchester boss McLaughlin has openly admitted. The 22 year old has played 12 games in the division, all in his time at Oakwell.

Former player Mark Schwarzer spoke about the deal saying, "For me it is a wise move for all parties involved. There were limited opportunities for Paul at Ipswich which is a huge shame as he has the tools to be very successful in the future and so dropping back down a level to join Colchester seems a wise move from him."

The ex Fulham and Middlesbrough keeper continued, "Colchester needed to sure up their defence, I still feel like a few more deals need to be done in order for them to compete like they wish to this season. However, this signing speaks volumes about the direction the club seem to be headed in the upcoming season and if one or two more deals can be made, particularly in the defensive areas – they will be a real force in the division."

Colchester begin their League One season at home to MK Dons on the 5th of August before games to Scunthorpe, Bury, Oldham and Southend in the league with games in the Capital One Cup and Checkatrade Trophy slotted in the month also.

Ajayi Completes Colchester Switch

http://i3.walesonline.co.uk/incoming/article8919628.ece/ALTERNATES/s615/2Semi.jpg

Semi Ajayi has joined Colchester United on a free transfer following his release from Cardiff City.

Ajayi made eleven appearances for now League One side Rotherham whilst on loan, who were relegated from the Championship last season. This followed on from previous spells at Crewe, who were also relegated during his time at the club to League Two and Wimbledon beforehand in the same campaign.

The center-back came through the Charlton youth ranks before signing for Arsenal on a free transfer in 2013. He spent a year with the Premiership side before making the trip to Wales to join Cardiff, but the same fate would follow him this summer as he was released without making a single appearance for the Bluebirds – instead playing for the clubs listed above on loan.

The Nigerian born defender, who has chose to play for his birth country rather than England, has the perfect mix of height, strength and speed. Standing at 6'3, he is a rather imposing figure at the heart of the defence, possessing a strong head but also a surprising amount of pace at the same time, in which can only help his causes.

The 23 year old however did struggle during his time at Rotherham, as the Millers failed to keep a clean sheet in any of the games Ajayi featured in. Yet his first employer, Chris Powell who was Charlton manager at the time believes that it was just a 'one off' and that Ajayi will 'only improve as time goes on.'

"During my time as manager Semi always seemed a promising talent that we were keeping a close eye on in the academy. When he asked to leave to join Arsenal after his loan ended with Dartford, enjoying a very good season may I add, it was a huge shame for the club. To see him have a poor campaign with Rotherham last season is sad to see, however I feel it was just a one off for him."

Powell added, "He was a good character to have at the club as he had a willingness to succeed and was a determined individual. He will only improve as time goes on, especially now at a club like Colchester that definitely have the resources and staff to get the best out of him."

Ajayi joins on a two year deal that will keep him at the club until 2019, similarly to fellow summer signing Paul Digby who joined from Ipswich, also on a free after being released from the Championship outfit.
