A week after surprisingly leaving Ajax, Milan de Koningh has returned back to to his native homeland, but he’s taken control of the Netherlands national side after Giovanni van Bronckhorst returned back to Feyenoord almost a year after leaving, and with the country in the midst of a World Cup qualifying campaign, The Oranje moved quickly and approached de Koningh within a mere couple of days on a three year contract worth 80k a week to Milan. And immediately he sets his sights on Latvia back at the home of his former club, Ajax, in two days.

In 2020, thirty years after winning the league, Liverpool and Jurgen Klopp finally go their hands on the Premier League trophy at the expense of Manchester City by a single, solitary point. And even though they lost five league games, Liverpool amassed an impressive 95 points. And boy, did their fans and players celebrate. Three decades in the making, ridicule from each club up and down the country, but finally, Liverpool had reached the top of the mountain again. But twelve months later, it came down around their ears. Beating out Manchester City yet again by two points this time, but not for the Premiership. Instead it was the battle for fourth place, and Jurgen paid with his job, as Liverpool chairman, Rob Brownback decided on a change.

The fans were devastated with the news, rightly so. Jurgen Klopp was much revered around these parts, but losing twenty points from the season before and almost losing out on Champions League football was unacceptable for the Liverpool hierarchy and understandably the fans have vented their anger towards them. But with the league starting up in a month or so, Liverpool have finally landed their man to replace, Klopp in the shape of Netherlands Manager, Milan de Koningh.

De Koningh enjoyed two glorious years at his boyhood club, Ajax. Winning the Eredivisie twice, the KNVB cup once, the Europa League and Champions League as well as the European Super Cup and Dutch Super Cup. Saw his stock rise considerably. And despite the personal issues he’s been dealt with in the past few months, his reputation as a manager cannot be argued. It’ll take some time for him to win over the Liverpool faithful, but given the football they played and the success he had at Ajax surely stands him in good stead.

“After leaving Ajax, i bided my time and looked for the right opportunity and thankfully, Liverpool came calling. They’re a club steeped in history and like Ajax are a huge club to manage. And i’m thankful to be given the chance to lead them forward. I know the fans loved Jurgen during his time here, but in due course i will make them forget all about him, as i lead the team into a successful new era.”

Congratulations on the jobs. Two highly coveted jobs which will really test Milan's abilities as a manager. However, as he proved at Ajax, he certainly has the quality to deliver.

Squad Overview 21-22

Liverpool have some great players, none more so than Mo Salah, Bobby Firmino, Sadio Mane, Alisson, Samuel Umtiti and Virgil van Dijk, but they’re all 30 or approaching. Although Milan de Koningh would love to keep them, and it would take some rather huge offers for him to part ways with them. But he knew he had to look at rebuilding the squad, whilst keeping them competitive. As Chairman, Rob Brownback has demanded de Koningh to win the Premiership this season. With the pressure of being successful at Ajax, Milan is familiar with it. But it’s also going to be much harder than winning the Eredivisie, as the Premier League is hugely competitive and Six clubs all in the mix to win the crown.

With the club severely lacking in the AMC department, with Adam Lallana on his way out and 20 year old, Curtis Jones, who is certainly a capable backup, but Milan wants someone to replace Lallana and be the focal point of the team.

With Alisson in goal, Tierney, Robertson, Alexander-Arnold, Aarons in the fullback positions, as well as van Dijk, Umtiti, Gomez, Matip, Samassekou, Gomez at CB, the defence is really strong for now.

Same can be said for midfield. Fabinho, Keita, Henderson, Gagliardini & Oxlade-Chamberlain in the middle. Salah, Zaha, Mane & Woodburn out wide, it’s just upfront that Liverpool are really lacking. And could very well be cause for concern for de Koningh and van Basten. Times are changing at Liverpool, that’s for sure. But for the better?

Two in, Two out.

Milan de Koningh has gotten to work quickly at Liverpool, with the new season almost upon us. And in doing so, has risked the ire of the Ajax fans who once adored him, as he’s gone back to Ajax and taken Lisandro Martinez (£18.5m) and Antonio Marin (£21.5m) to Liverpool with him for a combined fee of £40 million. Which many will view as bargains in this day and age of football.

“I know the Ajax faithful will be annoyed, but we didn’t force the board to accept such low sums. That’s what they deemed fair. Lisandro i activated his clause, which they put in after i left. I would’ve never allowed that. And Antonio was listed for loan, which a player of his talent and what he’s already accomplished in the two years at the club, was disrespectful and clearly shows why Pep Guardiola got sacked from Manchester City. He clearly hasn’t got a clue. Both are fantastic additions to the squad, and just like they were with me at Ajax, they’ll be hugely successful here. And both will provide brilliant competition for the guys in front of them already. And that can only be good for the team. Better competition, better performances. They will get chances, they know this. They know me. They love me.”

With Milan overseeing the incomings of these two, he also oversaw the outgoings of Marcos Sensai (£24m) and Adam Lallana (£22m) to Napoli and West Ham respectively. Sensai was a £2.6m signing from San Lorenzo last summer and although he played 12 league games, de Koningh deemed him not worthy to be challenging for a spot in the center of defence. And Lallana, had been a favourite of Klopp’s, but he knew his time was up at Anfield after a chat with de Koningh, and eventually West Ham paid Liverpool want they wanted and got their man. His seven years won’t be forgotten by the Liverpool fans.

Summer Transfer Window Round Up 21-22

Milan only had a few weeks till deadline day, to change the squad, if he wanted or needed too.

And after a frantic month on the negotiation side of things, de Koningh began shaping the squad into how he wanted. And he went back to Ajax and brought in a player he brought to the club, Thiago Almada for a fee of £25m.

The future G.O.A.T with the current G.O.A.T

Along with Almada, de Koningh strengthened his strikeforce with the capture of Rafael Leao and one of his favourite players as he raids his old club for the last time this window at least, and brings Vincent Janssen to the club. Two years ago had this transfer happened, Liverpool would be rightly mocked. But since going to Ajax and being under the guidance of de Koningh and van Basten, Janssen has shown his true potential and to get him for that kind of fee as well, is a bargain.

“I know Vincent very well and he knows me. This transfer was a no brainer, it had to happen. I know critics will look back at his time at Tottenham, but he’s proven since then he’s a very capable striker. I know the Eredivisie wasn’t a strong league, but he done it in Europe, both seasons, scoring against some strong teams. So i’m certain that Vinny will become a fan favourite here.”

Reekem Harper, a 21 year old was brought to replace the outgoing Jordan Henderson. And to fill their home-grown quota Liverpool have loaned in Eddie Nketiah on loan from Arsenal. And permanent transfers for Tom Ward and Phil Simmons, who many reckon will unsurp Kane as England’s top scorer in years to come. And with Iago Herrerin departing for sunny Spain and Zaragoza, left de Koningh short on backups for Alisson in goal. It was abit more expensive than he would’ve liked or hoped, but bringing in Alban Lafont for £22.5m was a show of intent. And in the hope it would push Alisson to further heights, and eventually take over from him. And the final piece in the transfer jigsaw for de Koningh was Dani Olmo. With Atletico and Manchester Utd coverting his signature, Milan acted fast on deadline day and secured the highly rated signing of the 23 year old.

With Liverpool starting off the season against Championship challenging, Arsenal. Milan will be expecting the maximum 15 points from those five games.

Quite a turnover there. I'm intrigued to see how this influx of players arriving and leaving the club may affect results and performances, especially to begin with against the likes of Arsenal and Chelsea.
