Wednesday 25th February 2015 – Olympique Lyonnais v Manchester City (Champions League First Knockout Stage 1st Leg)

MCFC Starting XI – Hart, Richards, Varane, Nastasic, Ramon; Milner, Barry, Lampard, Bale; Sneijder; Cavani SUBS – Pantilimon, Zabaleta, Kompany, De Rossi, Nem, Aguero, Saurez

Lyon Starting XI – Jung, Reveillere, Lovren, Bisevac, Monzon; Briand, Honda, Motta, Michel Bastos, Lopez, Gomis SUBS – Kameni, Zeffane, Debo, De Bruyne, Benzia, Kone, Gonalons

Man City have all-but secured their place in the Quarter Finals with this perfect example of what to do against 10 men. City fell behind but were quickly back in front before Lyon had Lopez sent off for a reckless challenge on the half way line, City then began to dominate and will go into the second leg with not much to worry about.

Final Score – Olympique Lyonnais 1 (Briand 20) Manchester City 5 (Cavani 23, Nastasic 29, 55, Aguero 51, Milner 57)

MOTM – Matija Nastasic

Attendance – 38,512

Saturday 28th February 2015 – Aston Villa v Manchester City (Premier League)

MCFC Starting XI – Hart, Zabaleta, Kompany, Nastasic, Ramon; Nasri, De Rossi, Toure, Bale; Aguero; Suarez SUBS – Forster, Varane, Clichy, Milner, Nem, Silva, Cavani

Villa Starting XI – Guzan, Hutton, Clark, Hangeland, Izaguirre; Lowton, Williams, Makoun, Ince; Agbonlahor, Bent SUBS – Given, N’Zogbia, Baker, Gardner, Delfouneso, Bennett, Herd

After City embarrassed Villa by beating them 12-2 in November, City fans knew Villa would be really up for this game and that proved to be the case, as it took a goal in injury time for Cavani to salvage a point for City. Today’s point means City will face a very tough task in retaining their title and many now expect United will have it wrapped up sooner rather than later. City were also dealt a huge blow with the news Vincent Kompany will miss the next 3-4 weeks with a pulled hamstring.

Final Score – Aston Villa 2 (Agbonlahor 46, 52) Manchester City 2 (Bale 47, Cavani 90+2)

MOTM – Gabriel Agbonlahor

Attendance – 40,932
Great result against Lyon there, and good save against Villa :)
Great results against United and OL :)

Manager’s February Review

Another undefeated month but two draws have seen us fall further behind United and our chances of retaining our title are now very slim. United have a big points difference and three games in hand with us only having 9 games left. The draws away at both Villa and Southampton were unacceptable and are games we expect to win. The poor showing has also seen us drop into 3rd behind Arsenal.

The month saw me win my first domestic Cup competition and it was a very sweet victory over United at Wembley. The Club deserved it and we will be looking to continue our success in the other competitions. In the FA Cup, we drew away at Chelsea and have earnt a replay that will be played this week and will hopefully see us progress. And in the Champions League we dominated Lyon and find ourselves pretty assured of a place in our third Quarter Final in three years.

My player of the month will come as no surprise, and I award it to Matija Nastasic. The man is an absolute rock, never fails to do his job at the back and is easily one of the first names on the team sheet right now. Not only does he defend amazingly well but he isn’t afraid to put his head in at the other end and has contributed three goals this month. Nastasic also won the Premier League Young Player of the Month award, with Raphael Varane coming third.

Wednesday 4th March 2015 – Manchester City v Chelsea (FA Cup 5th Round Replay)

MCFC Starting XI – Forster, Zabaleta, Varane, Lescott, Clichy; Zurak, Barry, Lampard, Nem; Sneijder, Cavani SUBS – Hart, Zabaleta, Nastasic, Toure, Milner, Silva, Aguero

Chelsea Starting XI – Courtios, Omeruo, Chalobah, David Luiz, Stubberfield; Ramsey, Mikel; Ben Arfa, Mata, Hazard; Jovetic SUBS – Cech, Cahill, Bruma, Oscar, Sturridge, Moreno, Terry

City cruised into the Quarter-Finals of the FA Cup with an emphatic win over Chelsea. It looked as if City would go in at half time 1-0 down, but a goal in injury time from Sneijder saw them go in level. City then dominated the second half and added three more goals, including a brace from Edinson Cavani. City will face Burnley in the Quarter-Finals.

Final Score – Manchester City 4 (Sneijder 45+1, Aguero 70, Cavani 72, 86) Chelsea 1 (Jovetic 25)

MOTM – Edinson Cavani

Attendance – 45,610

Saturday 7th March 2015 – Manchester City v Burnley (FA Cup 6th Round)

MCFC Starting XI – Forster, Zabaleta, Varane, Nastasic, Toase; Nasri, De Rossi, Toure, Nem; Aguero; Cavani SUBS – Hart, Richards, Clichy, Milner, Bale, Silva, Marcio Roberto

Burnley Starting XI – Grant, O’Neill, Hughes, Shackell, Lumb; Albrighton, Marney, Edgar, Hosny, McCann; Austin SUBS – Jakovlevs, Hoyte, Barnett, Wallace, Ebanks-Blake, Dummigan, O’Kane

A single first half goal from Sergio Aguero is enough to secure Manchester City’s place in the FA Cup Semi-Final and once again send them to Wembley. City dominated the game and rarely looked like conceding thanks to another brilliant display from Nastasic and his central defensive partner, Raphael Varane. In the Semi-Final City will face Arsenal, while in the other Semi, Aston Villa will face Man United.

Final Score – Manchester City 1 (Aguero 21) Burnley 0

MOTM – Raphael Varane

Attendance – 47,405

Saturday 14th March 2015 – Manchester City v Chelsea (Premier League)

MCFC Starting XI – Hart, Richards, Varane, Nastasic, Clichy; Nasri, De Rossi, Toure, Nem; Aguero; Cavani SUBS – Forster, Zabaleta, Lescott, Milner, Bale, Silva, Suarez

Chelsea Starting XI – Cech, Essien, Terry, Moreno, Cole; Ramires, Mikel; Pedro, Mata, Hazard; Jovetic SUBS – Courtois, Chalobah, David Luiz, Carrick, Torres, Bruma, Cahill

A complete attacking performance from Sergio Aguero was enough to guide City to a very comfortable victory over Chelsea, and the performance was made even sweeter by the fact he has signed a new 4 year contract just 2 days before. City dominated possession through-out the game and restricted Chelsea to just 4 shots in the 90 minutes.

Final Score – Manchester City 3 (Aguero 6, 64, Nastasic 13) Chelsea 0

MOTM – Sergio Aguero

Attendance – 47,405

Tuesday 17th March 2015 – Manchester City v Olympique Lyonnais (Champions League First Knock-out Round 2nd Leg)

MCFC Starting XI – Pantilimon, Zabaleta, Varane, Lescott, Ramon; Milner, Barry, Lampard, Bale; Silva; Suarez SUBS – Hart, Richards, Nastasic, De Rossi, Nasri, Henshall, Cavani

Lyon Starting XI – Jung, Reveillere, Kone, Bisevac, Monzon; Thiago Motta, De Bruyne; Briand, Honda, Michel Bastos, B Gomis SUBS – Kameni, M Gomis, Gonalons, Grenier, Benzia, Zeffane, Dabo

Expectations of a classic were low before the game, and them people will be able to say “I told you so”, as City scored early to make it nearly impossible for any kind of Lyon comeback. Lyon missed a penalty in the first half but did manage to pull one back in the second half but it was meaningless in terms of the results.

In the Quarter-Final’s City will face Juventus, with the first leg at the Etihad Stadium. The winner of this tie will face either Sevilla or Real Madrid in the Semi-Final.

Final Score – Manchester City 1 (Silva 14) Olympique Lyonnais 1 (De Bruyne 66)
Manchester City win 6-2 on aggregate

MOTM – Bakary Kone

Attendance – 47,250

Manager’s March Review

March has been a very strange month in terms of fixtures with us only playing one league game all month, but it was a great win for us to beat Chelsea so convincingly.

In the FA Cup, we defeated Chelsea in the 5th Round replay at the beginning of the month very easily 4-1, before meeting Burnley in the 6th round and again a comfortable 1-0 win sees us make the Semi-Final’s of the FA Cup and we will face Arsenal at Wembley, with a possibility of meeting United again in a final if we beat Arsenal. In the Champions League, we faced Lyon in the 2nd leg of the first round and having won the first leg 5-1, we played a weakened team and drew 1-1.

My player of the month is Sergio Aguero. With it being such a strange month for fixtures, I have given the award to the man who was unbelievable again Chelsea in the league game and also scored the only goal in the 6th Round of the FA Cup against Burnley. His movement creates chances for others as well as getting himself into space to score the goals.

The month ended with International fixtures and we have lost Tihomir Zurak for the rest of the season and Samir Nasri for a week. A more crushing blow is that while training at our training complex, Yaya Toure was left in some discomfort and has been to see a specialist about a hip injury and will also miss the rest of the season. And on the last day of the month, Gael Clichy pulled up in the weight’s room with a back strain and is likely to miss the majority of the remaining couple of months.

Wednesday 1st April 2015 – Manchester United v Manchester City (Premier League)

http://i1269.photobucket.com/albums/jj595/MCFCDAP/UnitedvCity_zps7d7758ef.png

It’s top v third today, as Manchester United look to put the title out of reach for current Champions Manchester City. City come into the game in great form and hope to reduce the gap on United and put a bit of doubt in their minds and hope they can influence them to slip up as we enter the final two months of the season.

City will be without influencial midfielder Yaya Toure who has been ruled out for the rest of the season and will need someone else to step up and fill the gap in the centre of midfield. City will also be without Gael Clichy who will be lucky to see any action for the rest of the season as well, but they will be boosted by the return of Vincent Kompany. The choice up front is interesting with Kinkladze having to chose between the Uruguayan pair of Cavani and Suarez. This is Suarez’s first Manchester Derby and his first meeting with Patrice Evra in the City shirt.

United have a full strength squad, apart from an injury to Antonio Valencia. United’s main man this season has been Wayne Rooney who has contributed 37 goals in 44 games in all competitions this season, but has scored only 2 in his last 7 games. United’s form is unbelievable, having won their last 14 league games and City will face a tough task in trying to break that run.

MCFC Subs – Forster, Zabaleta, Varane, Barry, Bale, Sneijder, Suarez

MUFC Subs – Lindegaard, van Persie, Fellaini, Smalling, Welbeck, Eriksen, Nkoulou

First Half

The first half was dominated by United in terms of possession and shots on the goal, but the main person to influence the game is the referee, who in the first half alone has shown 8 yellow cards, two of which have been shown to Wayne Rooney who was dismissed in the 42nd minute. City know they need to win to stand any chance of catching United and will have a man advantage in the second half to try and take the three points from Old Trafford.

Half Time - Manchester United 0 Manchester City 0

Second Half

Manchester City may have had an extra man for the whole of the second half but they did nothing to show their extra man, they created very few chances and paid the ultimate penalty. With 15 minutes to go the man who gave away the penalty in the fixture at the Etihad this season, Phil Jones, rose above everybody in the area to head home a Baines corner and give United three points that will almost guarantee the title is going to Old Trafford in Alex Ferguson’s final season as a manager. The win is also United’s 15th consecutive win in the Premier League, which is a record in the English top division.

City were fined £25,000 for failing to control their players during the game after having 6 players shown a yellow card by the referee. One of those yellow cards went to Daniele De Rossi, who has now amassed 10 yellow cards this season and will be suspended for the next 2 games.

Saturday 4th April 2015 – Manchester City v Totttenham Hotspur (Premier League)

Former Manchester City manager Roberto Mancini has been appointed the new manager of Borussia Dortmund, his first job since leaving City 3 seasons ago.

MCFC Starting XI – Hart, Zabaleta, Varane, Lescott, Toase; Bale, Barry, Lampard, Silva; Blanco; Suarez SUBS – Forster, Ramon, Kompany, Milner, Nem, Aguero, Cavani

Spurs Starting XI – Lloris, Walker, Ifa, Kaboul, Alaba; N’Diaye, Sandro, Xhaka; Sosa, Young; Adebayor SUBS – Gomes, Townsend, Nainggolan, Sigurosson, Defoe, Kjaer, Olsson

Manchester City needed to bounce back from their Derby defeat and did do with a convincing performance against Spurs. City named a reasonably weakened side ahead of their Champions League game with Juventus, and it took them 50 minutes to score but when they did it was worth the wait as former Spurs man Gareth Bale went on a mazy run and smashed home the opening goal. Cavani came on in the second half and bagged the second of the game with a powerful strike from the edge of the area.

Final Score – Manchester City 2 (Bale 51, Cavani 73) Tottenham Hotspur 0

MOTM – Raphael Varane

Attendance – 47,405

Tuesday 7th April 2015 – Manchester City v Juventus (Champions League Quarter-Final 1st Leg)

MCFC Starting XI – Hart, Richards, Kompany, Nastasic, Ramon; Nasri, De Rossi, Milner, Nem; Aguero; Cavani SUBS – Pantilimon, Zabaleta, Varane, Barry, Bale, Sneijder, Suarez

Juventus Starting XI – Buffon, Bonucci, Chiellini, Papadopoulos; Giaccherini, Vidal, Asamoah, Marchisio, Giovinco; Falcao, Tevez SUBS – Leali, Anita, Albiol, Moutinho, Vucinic, Marrone, Barzagli

Manchester City were given a European footballing lesson by Juventus but still aren’t completely out of the tie, and if it wasn’t for a missed penalty in the final 10 minutes from Aguero they would have gone into the second leg level. A hard working performance from former City man Carlos Tevez will definitely be what he wanted and has put his side in a strong position ahead of the home leg of this tie.

Final Score – Manchester City 1 (Nasri 75) Juventus 2 (Papadopoulos 29, Falcao 32)

MOTM – Kyriakos Papadopoulos

Attendance – 47,405

Saturday 11th April 2015 – Arsenal v Manchester City (FA Cup Semi-Final)

http://i1269.photobucket.com/albums/jj595/MCFCDAP/FACupSemi_zpsea5216cc.png

MCFC Starting XI – Hart, Zabaleta, Kompany, Lescott, Ramon; Nasri, Barry, Sneijder, Bale; Blanco; Cavani SUBS – Forster, Richards, Nastasic, Milner, Silva, Nem, Aguero

Arsenal Starting XI – Szczesny, Corchia, Mertesacker, Dragovic, Aogo; Frimpong, Verratti; Gervinho, Wilshere, Krejci; Giroud SUBS – Fabianski, Llorente, Oxlade-Chamberlain, Gibbs, Podolski, Holtby, Vermaelen

A strange but exciting game at Wembley today, where neither team seemed to want to take control of the game. Both teams had plenty of chances but very few were on target, the first half was dull until the 45th minute when Giroud had a goal disallowed for offside. The second half was slow paced but City perhaps had more of the ball, but it took them until the 83rd minute to hit the target and the game finished 0-0, so extra time was to follow.

Extra time followed the same pattern as the 90 minutes and neither team could find the net, mainly due to a couple of big saves from both goalkeepers so it went to penalties. Again the teams didn’t want to separate, after three penalties it was 1-1, but then a crucial miss from Vermaelen gave Milner a chance to give City the lead and he did and when Giroud made it 2-2 it was down to David Silva to seal the win for City and he made no mistake and sent City into the FA Cup Final. City will face Aston Villa in the Final after them defeated Manchester United 2-1 in the other Semi-Final.

Final Score – Arsenal 0 Manchester City 0 AET
Manchester City win 3-2 on penalties

MOTM – Dennis Aogo

Attendance – 90,000

Wednesday 15th April 2015 – Juventus v Manchester City (Champions League Quarter-Final 2nd Leg)

MCFC Starting XI – Hart, Richards, Kompany, Nastasic, Ramon; Nasri, De Rossi, Milner, Nem; Aguero; Cavani SUBS – Pantilimon, Zabaleta, Varane, Lampard, Silva, Bale, Suarez

Juventus Starting XI – Buffon, Bonucci, Chiellini, Papadopoulos; Vucinic, Marchisio, Vidal, Asamoah, Giovinco; Falcao, Tevez SUBS – Leali, Anita, Barzagli, Giaccherini, Quagliarella, Marrone, Moutinho

Manchester City came here 2-1 down from the first leg and in all honesty never looked like turning it around, they didn’t show up and when Juventus scored just after half time it made a comeback look unlikely, and it was made impossible when Juve made it 2-0. A late goal from Cavani gave City something to have a go at in the final 10 minutes but they never went close.

Final Score – Juventus 2 (Asamoah 47, Bonucci 72) Manchester City 1 (Cavani 79)
Juventus win 4-2 on aggregate

MOTM – Leonardo Bonucci

Attendance – 41,000

Saturday 18th April 2015 – Manchester City v Sunderland (Premier League)

MCFC Starting XI – Hart, Zabaleta, Varane, Nastasic, Toase; Nasri, Barry, Sneijder, Bale; Blanco; Suarez SUBS – Forster, Richards, Kompany, De Rossi, Nem, Aguero, Cavani

Sunderland Starting XI – Westwood, Clyne, O’Shea, Hanley, Kilgallon; Huddlestone, Diarra; Dempsey, Sessegnon, Johnson, Fletcher SUBS – Mignolet, Sviatchenko, Eardley, Dyer, Larson, Diakite, Bramble

City deserved the victory here and if it wasn’t for Sunderland’s goalkeeper I’m sure they would have run up a much bigger score. City’s only goal came from the penalty spot and it was probably the only way City were going to get past Westwood today who made a series of stunning saves.

Final Score – Manchester City 1 (Barry 8(p)) Sunderland 0

MOTM – Alou Diarra

Attendance – 47,405

Wednesday 22nd April 2015 – Everton v Manchester City (Premier League)

MCFC Starting XI – Hart, Richards, Kompany, Nastasic, Ramon; Milner, De Rossi, Lampard, Nem; Aguero; Cavani SUBS – Forster, Zabaleta, Varane, Barry, Bale, Blanco, Suarez

Everton Starting XI – Howard, Coleman, Jagielka, Heitinga, Distin; Mirallas, Colback, Parker, Oviedo; Naismith; Vellios SUBS – Mucha, Utaka, Pienaar, Zaha, Duffy, Brayford, Barkley

A disappointing performance from City sees them lose a game late on in the season that they can’t really afford to lose, with second place slipping away. The defeat also makes it impossible for them to win the title.

Final Score – Everton 1 (Oviedo 55) Manchester City 0

MOTM – Vincent Kompany

Attendance – 38,262
