Monthly Review

We won every game again, and have climbed further up the table with that brilliant derby win last week. We look stronger than we did at the start of the season, and there has been a definite improvement from pre-season. If we keep playing like this, I think we can get some silverware this season.

On the bright side I'm 2nd on goal difference behind Porto, and 3 points ahead of Benfica ( ) in third. This pleases me

Matthaus' Diary: Big Games

Big games can make or break a player or a manager. Two have stuck in my mind, one as a player, one as a manager. The one as a manager was here at Sporting, the derby last month. It's the biggest game of the season for fans, and they never want to lose. It's a must win game. The atmosphere was electric, the fans and players were well up for the game, and we won the game, on our turf, in front of our fans. We went mental for both goals, and the songs from the stands were louder than anything I've ever heard. The fans weren't confident with me before, but I think they are happier now. The fans are everything. They make the club tick.

I remember another massive game clearly, while playing for the West German national team, against England, in the 1990 World Cup. We knew if we won we'd be against Diego Maradona and Argentina in the final. Even so, any game against England is a massive one. They beat us in the '66 final, and we didn't want them reaching another final, especially at our expense. I captained the side throughout the tournament, but this game was special.

It was a very close game, and we both had chances to win it. In fairness England played very well, and our goal was lucky. When Lineker got their equaliser 10 minutes from time, we were very disappointed. It went on into extra time, then to penalties. I scored mine, and we went on to win thankfully. It didn't matter how we had played at that stage. We could have dominated and deserved to win 10-0, but if it gets to penalties, it's anyone's game.

After that, we won the final against Argentina, with Brehme scoring a late penalty, and it turned into a great year. It was the last tournament we would play separately for East Germany, and I had a fantastic tournament. It was great to captain my country, and I got named in the team of the tournament alongside players like Schillaci, Roger Milla, and Paul "Gazza" Gascoigne, as well as scoring 4 goals along the way.

That was a great year for me as a player. Hopefully I will experience a thrill like that as a manager someday.

Matthaus: "Bayern Are The Only Club"

Sporting Lisbon boss Lothar Matthaus has spoken to journalists in a press interview about any possible future moves he could make.

"For now I think it is only Bayern that I would go to. They are a massive club, and my team. I loved my time there, and would go through it again. At the moment I wouldn't leave Sporting. I want to achieve a lot here, but if in four years Bayern approached me, it would be hard not to consider it. As much as I'm loving my time in Portugal, I love Bayern with all my heart."

Matthaus has been a big success in Lisbon since his arrival in July, and has lead his team to full points in every game this season, including a derby win over Benfica. His team currently lie second behind rivals Porto on goal difference.

Want to see you stay, but until then there's a lot of time.

Matthaus: "We Are The Best"

Sporting Clube de Portugal manager Lothar Matthaus has riled up Benfica and Porto fans by claiming Sporting "are the biggest and best team in Portugal" as well as claiming they are title favourites ahead of their European clash with Belgian giants Anderlecht.

This comes just days after Matthaus admitted in a press interview that he would have to consider an offer from Bayern if his old club came calling, but he has re-affirmed his loyalty to the Leões fans with this statement.

Sporting have already beaten rivals Benfica this season, endearing Matthaus and his staff to the green side of Lisbon, but are yet to face Porto, who top the table on goal difference. Matthaus says he has "no worries yet", but has admitted in the past that his talented strikers need to start scoring more.

Matthaus has been a success so far in his time in the Portuguese capital, bringing a more continental look to the backroom staff, as well as bringing wins across the board. Sporting fans will be hoping this run can last all season, and there will be some success at the end of it.
